Dubbel D is een coming of age film over de 13-jarige Puck die op schermkamp wordt gedwongen een nieuwe connectie te vinden met haar lichaam, waarvan ze zich steeds vaker vervreemd voelt.

|| HET VERHAAL ||

De 13-jarige PUCK weet heel goed wie ze is: een strijder. Ze is maar wat trots dat ze niet zoals “andere meisjes” is; in plaats van zich op te tutten traint zij keihard om te winnen van haar mannelijke vrienden op de schermschool. Haar lichaam ziet ze als functioneel, en zeker niet als deel van haar identiteit. Maar wanneer ze op schermkamp wordt geconfronteerd met het feit dat haar lichaam steeds meer vrouwelijke trekken begint te vertonen, en ze ook nog eens haar eerste menstruatie krijgt, wordt ze gedwongen haar relatie met haar lichaam te herzien.

|| REGIEVISIE ||

Ik zal met deze film afstuderen aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht. Het valt me op dat hoewel er steeds meer aandacht is voor gender in narratieve films, er vaak toch op een ongenuanceerde manier met het onderwerp wordt omgegaan. Alsof alles heel zwart-wit is, en er een strakke keus gemaakt moet worden tussen ofwel de mannelijke ofwel de vrouwelijke identiteit. Ik ben van mening dat iedereen de kans moet krijgen een eigen identiteit en lichamelijkheid te vinden, waarbij gender hokjes anno 2018 niet meer de bepalende factor zouden moeten zijn. Iedereen zou vrij moeten zijn hun eigen interesses, uitingen en uiterlijkheden te bepalen naar gelang ze zich daarbij thuisvoelen. Vanuit deze visie schreef ik de film “Dubbel D”, gebaseerd op veelal mijn eigen ervaringen uit mijn tienertijd. De schermsport, meisjesgroepen, en de menstruatie (nog altijd een “taboe”-onderwerp, zelfs in coming of age films over meisjes) waren voor mij belangrijke arena’s en obstakels bij het vinden van mijn eigen lichamelijke identiteit. Daarom zijn deze elementen leidende motieven geworden in mijn afstudeerfilm.

Intussen is het scenario bijna af en in maart zullen we de film opnemen, op onder andere een prachtige locatie in Beek (Gelderland). In this short film we will follow the story of Puck,
a 13-year old who has to find a new connection to her
changing body - that she feels increasingly estranged from - while at a fencing camp.

|| THE STORY ||

13-year old PUCK knows who she is: a fighter. She’s mighty proud she isn’t “like other girls”; instead of worrying about her looks, she trains extensively to win from her male friends at her fencing school. She sees her body as strictly functional; and definitely not as a part of her identity. But when she is confronted by her changing body that starts to develop more traits associated with femininity, and on top of it all gets her first period while at a fencing camp, she is forced to reevaluate the relationship she has to her body.

|| DIRECTOR'S VISION ||

With this film I will graduate from my course at the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU). I noticed that while “gender” is an increasingly popular theme in narrative film, gender is often represented as a very “black and white” matter. Like there is a very harsh line between just two meager choices one has to make: a choice between either a female or a male identity. It is my opinion that everyone should get the chance to find their own physicality and identity, and that these gendered boxes of male and female should have no part in this in modern society. Everyone should be free to decide on their own interests, modes of expression and looks, depending on what they feel comfortable with. The script of “Double D” was written with this vision in mind, and was based on my own experiences as a teenager. Fencing, girlgroups, and menstruation (still a “taboo”-subject, even in coming of age films) were important arena’s and obstacles in her own search for a physical identity of my own. That’s why these elements will make an appearance as important motives in my thesis film.
