Ik ben Xiaoxiao Xu. Ik ben fotograaf en ik lanceer deze campagne om geld in te zamelen om de productiekosten van mijn vierde fotoboek, Watering my horse by a spring at the foot of the Long Wall, te dekken.

Voor Watering my Horse heb ik de Lange Muur van China van begin tot eind gevolgd en het leven van de mensen aan de voet van de Muur gefotografeerd. De reis begon in het voorjaar van 2017 en werd voortgezet tot in de lente van 2018. Het resulteerde in een road trip van 25.000 kilometer.

Het maken van een publicatie is kostbaar. Door mee te doen aan deze campagne help je me om Watering my Horse te produceren. Watering my horse by a spring at the foot of The Long Wall

De Lange Muur werd gebouwd als een verdediging tegen indringers, zoals de Mongoolse stammen of het Japanse leger in de jaren dertig; toch faalde deze militaire functie van de Muur. Mensen kwamen en gingen; soldaten en kooplieden liepen er doorheen en brachten verschillende culturen, talen, voedsel en etnische groepen met zich mee. Het is een plek waar mensen al eeuwenlang leven, werken en hun tradities bewaren. Het is een ruimte en, eenvoudiger, slechts een muur. Het is vanuit dit uitgangspunt dat ik aan een fotografische reis ben begonnen om de verborgen identiteit van de Lange Muur te tonen.

De muur kronkelt door tijd en ruimte. In plaats van het op te vatten als een barrière beladen met betekenissen, zie ik het liever minder gedefinieerd. In mijn boek Watering my Horse laat ik het dagelijkse leven zien van mensen rondom de Muur, de desolate atmosfeer van het gebied en de melancholie van het verstrijken van de tijd. Ik probeer een gevoel van schoonheid te vinden tussen heden en verleden, tussen contradictie en harmonie.

Het boek

Het boek kent verschillende lagen. Een ruime selectie van mijn eigen beelden wordt gecombineerd met gevonden materiaal, waaronder pagina’s uit een met de hand getekende militaire atlas en pagina’s met handgeschreven folkloristische verhalen.

Daarnaast heb ik talloze artefacten gefotografeerd die gevonden zijn bij opgravingen of tijdens herstelwerkzaamheden van de Muur. Deze artefacten worden achterin het boek beschreven.

Bij elkaar leveren de verschillende verhalen een rijke blik op de tradities en het dagelijks leven van de mensen die bij de muur leven. Het boek volgt in grote lijnen de weg die ik heb afgelegd en daarmee zowel de seizoenen van lente, herfst naar winter als ook de geografische ligging van de Muur van oost naar west.

Samen met ontwerper en uitgever Rob van Hoesel van The Eriskay Connection werk ik aan het fotoboek Watering My horse by a spring at the foot of the Long Wall. Het wordt een boek van 112 pagina’s, 24x34 cm groot. Het boek bevat een essay door Maria-Caterina Bellinetti. Zij is schrijver en kunsthistoricus, gespecialiseerd in fotografie, Chinese visuele cultuur en propaganda.
Planning: de boekpresentatie is in Amsterdam in het voorjaar van 2020.

Wie ben ik？

Ik ben geboren in een zuidoostelijke stad in China en op mijn 14e emigreerde ik naar Nederland. In 2009 studeerde ik Cum Laude af aan de Fotoacademie in Amsterdam. Daarna werkte ik aan mijn eigen projecten.

In 2013 wordt het boek Love Doll Factory uitgebracht in samenwerking met collega fotograaf Marco van Duyvendijk. In 2014 kwam mijn eerste eigen fotoboek The Way to the Golden Mountain uit, dat over mijn geboortestad in China gaat. In 2015 is mijn tweede fotoboek The Sound of Stars uitgebracht, naar aanleiding van een artist in residence programma in Ravenna, Italië.

Mijn derde boek, Aeronautics in the Backyard — het eerste dat door The Eriskay Connection is uitgegeven— is met veel succes ontvangen. Het was genomineerd voor Beste Nederlandse fotoboek 2017, geselecteerd bij de beste fotoboeken door de Volkskrant 2016 en ontving daarnaast veel lovende recensies.

Watering My horse by a spring at the foot of the Long Wall zal mijn vierde fotoboek worden.

My name is Xiaoxiao Xu. I'm a photographer and I am launching this campaign to help raise funds to cover the costs of publishing my fourth photo book, Watering my horse by a spring at the foot of the Long Wall.

For Watering my horse I have followed the Long Wall of China from beginning to end and photographed the lives of the people along the foot of the wall. The journey began in the spring of 2017 and continued until the spring of 2018. It resulted in a road trip of 25,000 kilometers.

About the project
Contrary to what many people think, the Long Wall of China is not a single continuous construction, but rather a collection of walls and towers built during various Chinese dynasties. I followed the section of the wall from the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and take the viewers to the ruins of the older parts. Despite the decline, there is a lively relationship with the wall among the local population that honor and protect the wall.

I tried to discover the impact of fast-growing China on this historic site. What does the Wall reflect today? Which elements have disappeared and which remnants have survived? I have learned that the villages are mostly inhabited by the elderly and children, because young people are leaving the area to make more money in nearby towns. People, traditions, and places are gradually disappearing. My work focuses on the visual transformation of this process. From place to place I try to catch a glimpse of the past.

The Wall meanders through time and space. Instead of viewing it as a barrier laden with meanings, I prefer to see it less defined. I want to capture the ordinary, everyday life of people, grabbing the desolate atmosphere and melancholic state of time, which is something mythical, undefined and elusive.

The Photo book
The book has different layers. A wide selection of my own images is combined with found material, including pages from a hand-drawn military atlas and scanned pages with hand-written folklore stories, the translations of which have also been included.

In addition, I have photographed countless artifacts that were found during excavations or during repair work on the Wall. These artifacts are described at the end of the book.

Taken together, the different stories provide a rich look at both the traditions and daily life of the people who live along the wall. The editing of the book follows the route that I have traveled, and therefore the seasons from spring, autumn to winter and also the geographical location of the Wall from east to west.

Together with designer and publisher Rob van Hoesel from The Eriskay Connection, I am working on the photo book Watering My horse by a spring at the foot of the Long Wall. It will be a book of 112 pages, 24x34cm in size. The use of light-fiberwood-containing paper offers a counterbalance to the heavily loaded meaning of the Wall, which again emphasizes my point of view. The book contains an essay by Maria-Caterina Bellinetti. She is a writer and art historian specializing in photography, Chinese visual culture and propaganda.
Planning: the book presentation is in Amsterdam in the spring of 2020.
