Oerknal, DAM Festival and Cultural Exchange

Met trots kan Oerknal aankondigen dat we ensemble-in-residence zijn op DAM 2019! We hebben echter jouw hulp nodig om dit te realiseren.

Sinds 2006 vindt in Pristina (Kosovo) DAM, een jaarlijks muziekfestival, plaats. Het brengt jonge, internationale topmusici van over de hele wereld bij elkaar met als doel het verrijken van Kosovo’s culturele scene en het slaan van bruggen tussen verschillende landen, culturen en volken.

Op dit moment hebben we nog geen sluitende begroting. Het DAM Festival is heel gul geweest met haar ondersteuning, maar de internationale reiskosten die we maken voor dit project zijn helaas nog niet vergoed. Waarom is dit zo belangrijk voor ons?
Why is this so important to us?

We leven in een wereld waarin het veel te vaak gaat over het opwerpen van muren tussen mensen en gemeenschappen, een verhaal waarin nationale grenzen en restricties beperkingen opleggen voor wat mogelijk is op menselijk en artistiek niveau. De samenwerking tussen DAM Festival en Oerknal biedt een alternatief dat gaat over het samenbrengen van mensen van diverse achtergronden, culturen en generaties door gedeelde creatieve ervaringen. We hopen van harte dat je ons wilt steunen.

We are living in a world in which the main narrative is all too often about building walls between people and communities, a narrative in which national boundaries and residential restrictions limit what is possible on both a human and artistic level. The cooperation between DAM Festival and Oerknal offers a counter-narrative, one based on bringing individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures and life experiences together in cooperative, creative experiences. We can think of no type of initiative more worthy of support.

Wat willen we precies doen?What are we planning to do?

Tijdens deze residency (26 - 31 maart 2019) geven we drie optredens, verschillende openbare lezingen en gaan we werken met studenten van de Music Academy Pristina. Hiernaast wordt er ook voor het eerst de Balkan Composer Competition in Pristina (BCCP) georganiseerd, waarbij componisten uit de zes non-EU Balkan landen bij elkaar worden gebracht. Oerknal zal met de componisten werken en een selectie van hun composities uitvoeren. Dit zal hopelijk niet alleen bijdragen aan goede verhoudingen en culturele uitwisseling binnen de regio maar ook tussen Europa en de Balkan.

During this residency (26 - 31 March 2019), the members of Oerknal will present three performances, give public lectures and lead workshops for students of the Music Academy Prishtina. Next to this we are excited to announce the first edition of the Balkan Composer Competition in Prishtina (BCCP), a program with the goal of bringing together composers from the six non-EU Balkan countries, helping build relationships not only within the region but also between Europe and the Balkans. A detailed list of our activities at DAM can be found below.

René van Munster | “Meaningful Music in Healthcare”
26 maart, 13.00 u (lezing)

Meaningful Music in Healthcare (afgekort als ‘MiMiC’) is een innovatief onderzoeksproject van het Universitair Medisch Centrum in samenwerking met het Lectoraat Lifelong Learning in Music in Groningen. Drie professionele musici spelen een week lang op een (chirurgische) afdeling van het ziekenhuis waarbij ze muziek maken en improviseren voor zowel patiënten als medewerkers.

Onze cellist René van Munster is hier vanaf het begin in 2016 bij betrokken geweest. Hij laat een korte documentaire zien die over de praktijk gemaakt is en legt aan de hand van eigen ervaringen uit wat dit werk zo betekenisvol maakt, hoe de muziek wordt gemaakt en wat er allemaal wordt onderzocht.

Susanne Peters | “New Complexity: Contemporary Flute Repertoire”

Wat is complexiteit in muziek? How beïnvloedt notatie de manier waarop een uitvoerder handelt op het podium? Is het mogelijk om teveel informatie te geven in een score, om het té complex te maken?

Onze fluitiste Susanne Peters legt aan de hand van voorbeelden van componisten als Brian Ferneyhough en James Dillon uit wat de uitdaging en het plezier kan zijn van complexiteit in het hedendaagse fluit repertoire. Op het eerste gezicht lijkt deze muziek onspeelbaar – te veel werk om te leren en onpraktisch om te oefenen. Maar is dat écht zo? Susanne deelt haar ervaringen en fascinatie met de zogenaamde “New Complexity” school. Met specifieke voorbeelden bediscussiëert ze verschillende soorten ritmische notatie en extended techniques die veel voorkomen in dit repertoire en zal ze uitleggen hoe je als uitvoerder muzikale en expressieve vrijheid kunt vinden in deze té complexe scores, waarbij hopelijk verrassend romantische elementen worden ontdekt.

Een spannend programma van hedendaagse Amerikaanse kamermuziek, waaronder John Zorn’s post-moderne copy-paste meesterwerk Cat O’Nine Tails, David Lang’s funk-geïnspireerde basklarinet solo Press Release en de eindeloos boeiende en uitgestrekte post-minimalistische landschappen van John Luther Adams.

BCCP – Presentatieconcert
29 maart, 20.00 u

BCCP is een initiatief van Dardan Selimaj – oprichter en artistiek directeur van DAM Festival – en Rreze Kryeziu-Breznica – algemeen directeur van DAM Festival – met als doel om een kans te geven aan jonge componisten uit de zes non-EU Balkan landen om te werken met een Europees nieuwe muziekensemble van wereldklasse.

Begeleid door Amerikaanse dirigent en componist Gregory Charette geeft dit programma een aantal componisten de kans om nauw samen te werken met de spelers van Oerknal tijdens een week van workshops en repetities in Pristina. De componisten schrijven allen een stuk tussen de 6-10 minuten voor Oerknal bezetting (of kleiner, minimaal vijf instrumenten). Dit culmineert in een openbaar presentatieconcert in Pristina als deel van het DAM Festival 2019. Na dit concert zal Oerknal één van de componisten uitkiezen om een stuk te schrijven voor het volledige ensemble dat zal worden uitgevoerd in ons seizoen ‘19/’20 in Nederland. Op deze manier is het uiteindelijke doel van BCCP om substantieve relaties op te bouwen tussen componisten en muziekinstituten in de Balkan en de EU.

Faculty of Arts, Student Side-By-Side Concert
31 maart, 15.00 u

Gecoached door leden van Oerknal zullen studenten van de Kunstenfaculteit in Pristina een concert geven met 20e eeuws Amerikaans repertoire, van de graphic scores van Morton Feldman tot het improvisatorische minimalisme van Frederic Rzewski. Oerknal speelt samen met de studenten op het podium.

René van Munster | “Meaningful Music in Healthcare”
26 March, 13.00 (lecture)

Meaningful Music in Healthcare (abbreviated as ‘MiMiC’) is an ongoing innovative research project of the University Hospital in Groningen (the Netherlands) in collaboration with the Prince Claus Conservatoire. Three professional musicians go into one (surgical) hospital ward every morning for 6 days in a row in order to play and improvise music for patients and healthcare staff. Doing so creates meaningful musical moments and interactions for all involved.

Our cellist René has been a part of this project since its conception in 2016. He will show a short documentary illustrating the practice, after which he will explain what makes this project so meaningful, how the music is conceived and what research has been conducted through anecdotes of personal experiences.

Susanne Peters | “New Complexity: Contemporary Flute Repertoire”

What is complexity in music? How does notation influence the way a performer behaves on stage? Is it possible to give too much information in a score, to make it overly complex?

Using examples from composers Brian Ferneyhough and James Dillon, flutist Susanne Peters will explore the joys and challenges of complexity in contemporary flute repertoire. On first glance this music looks unplayable - too much work to learn and impractical to practice. But is that really the case? Susanne will share her experiences and fascination with the so called "New Complexity“ school. Using specific examples she will discuss particular types of rhythmical notation and extended techniques common in this repertoire as well as explore ways a performer can find musical and expressive freedom in these overly complex scores, hopefully discovering surprisingly romantic elements in the process.

An exciting program of contemporary American chamber music, including John Zorn’s postmodern cut-and-paste masterpiece Cat O’Nine Tails, David Lang’s funk-inspired bass clarinet solo Press Release and John Luther Adams’ riveting and expansive postminimalist landscapes.

BCCP – Presentation Concert
29 March, 20.00

BCCP was created by Dardan Selimaj – founder and artistic director of DAM Festival – and Rreze Kryeziu-Breznica – general director of DAM Festival – with the goal of giving emerging composers from the six (non EU) Balkan countries an opportunity to work with a world-class European new music ensemble.

Guided by American conductor and composer Gregory Charette, this program will enable selected composers to work directly with the players of Oerknal during a week of workshops and rehearsals in Prishtina. Selected composers will write a piece of between 6-10 minutes for Oerknal. The residency will culminate with a public concert in Prishtina as part of DAM Festival 2019. After this concert the members of Oerknal will select one of the composers to write a piece for full ensemble to be featured in Oerknal’s 2019/20 season with performances around The Netherlands. In this way the ultimate goal of BCCP is to build substantive relationships between composers and music institutions in the Balkans and the EU.

Coached by members of Oerknal, students from the Faculty of Arts Prishtina will present a concert of 20th-century American repertoire, ranging from the graphic scores of Morton Feldman to the improvisational minimalism of Frederic Rzewski. Oerknal will join the students side-by-side on stage.
