Story of the movie

This film shows how a talented boy who loves his island more than anything else has to work hard to convince his fellow islanders of his vision. The young Hemayel Martina is frivolous, outspoken, charming and ambitious.
He is inspirational and honors his language and culture in every conversation he conducts. The question is whether the island itself is open to receive worship from someone from it's own nest.

During Hemayel's years of life, Curaçao is undergoing one great development. It seems as if the fruits of the Cultural Emancipation that has been worked on so long can now be picked. Unfortunately, nobody sees the fruits hanging on the tree because the islanders are so concerned with criticizing each other that they completely forget to see how well they really are doing. But that remains unclear, because nobody takes a look in the tree to know if there are fruits to be picked. One is only busy with picking at each other and that frustrates Hemayel.

Hemayel promised to be the next great man in the history of Curacao. A tragic car accident when he was 20 years old ended his life before he reached his full potential and before he could see the big change in de cultural emancipation of Curacao he longed for. Leaving his dreams for our young country in his books and in the memories of those he touched in his short life. For us Hemayel represents a movement of the next generation of citizens of Curacao who find strength within themselves, their own language and culture.

My sweet Mango

"...If I do not brag about the delicious sweet taste of my mango, who will do that for me?..." That is one of the lines from a poem by Hemayel. "Be proud of what you have and do not wait for a compliment from someone else to see that". This vision is visible through nearly all of Hemayel's texts. According to him, it should not matter that you come from a small island to develop yourself at the highest level. And a language spoken by a relatively small number of people may not refrain you of developing on the highest level.

Anton's big dream

Anton de Bies, was born on Curaçao with ambitions to become a great actor. He recently graduated from the prestigious theater academy in Maastricht.

One night somewhere at the start of his second year at the academy, he woke up from a dream he never forgot. He had a white turtleneck on and was playing the leading role in a movie. A movie about Hemayel Martina, the poet from Curaçao who died too young.

From that day on Anton never let go of the dream and decided that he wanted to realize this movie. He took some big steps and did research. And now that he has graduated, he is ready to make this dream come true.

Cultural Emancipation Miss-Match

We see the fact that the residents of Curaçao have little regard for their achievements as our own Cultural Emancipation Miss Match. A mis- match in which the island has made big transformations on the one hand, but which cannot be used effectively because the people do not realize this yet. Our vision is that when they come to realize what they’ve achieved it will prove that Hemayel is not an exception. But that he was just one of the few who has been screaming out loud.

The Social experiment

We see this project as an social experiment to prove the potential hiding within Hemayel’s generation by forming a team that consists almost entirely of fellow-generation members of Hemayel. They think and dream and function primarily in Papiamento.

We believe that by letting this team produce a high-quality production, we will show the high potential that they have. Next to that it will show that the older generation before them has really taken steps in the development of their own Cultural Emancipation. And that the time has come to let the flowers bloom. Let them be proud and enjoy the fruits they have been harvesting.
