Wie ben ik?

Ik ben Melisa Monti; 24-jarige Argentijnse modeontwerper/cultural creative.

Ook als jij heb ik veel dromen. Ik ben opgegroeid in veel landen en dat heeft mij nogal nieuwsgierig gemaakt. Vorig jaar (2017) ben ik weer terug verhuisd naar Nederland om mijn dromen over een betere wereld te volgen.

Na een jaar veel inspirerende mensen te hebben ontmoet, heb ik Marian Duff (Directeur MAFB) ontmoet. Zij geloofde in mijn dromen en heeft mij de kans gegeven om dit jaar mee te doen aan het Fashion Fest 2018 in het Tropenmuseum!

Als creatief wil ik een verschil maken; producten maken met oog voor milieu, cultuur en mensenrechten. Daarom ben ik naast ontwerper ook peer educator bij Amnesty International, waar ik workshops geef over etnisch profileren aan Mbo-studenten door heel Nederland.

Waarom is jouw steun zo belangrijk voor mij?

Met jouw steun kan ik de materialen voor de collectie bekostigen: o.a. (duurzame) stoffen, knopen, ritsen, borduurgaren en het bedrukken van stoffen.

Ook gaat een deel naar een naaimachine, zodat ik alles zelf in elkaar kan zetten met mijn eigen handen voor Fashion Fest, maar ook voor toekomstige projecten.

Fashion Fest is een grote stap in mijn carrière; om mij als creatief aan de Nederlandse industrie te laten zien, en vanuit daar te kunnen groeien in verdere projecten. Ik werk hard voor mijn dromen en ambities, en geloof in de kracht van doorzettingsvermogen.

Fashion Fest

Het Fashion Fest Tropenmuseum editie 2018 is een co-creatie van MAFB en het Kenniscentrum voor Materiaalcultuur - van het Tropenmuseum, Afrikamuseum en Museum Volkenkunde. In het programma vormen alle deelnemers een team, waarbij elk team zal bestaan uit een ontwerper, een kapper, een visagist en 4 modellen. Samen maken we een laatste catwalkshow in het Tropenmuseum, waar een jury deelnemers beoordeelt uit alle disciplines. Het thema van dit jaar is Refusal and Radical Hope. Als ontwerper zal ik in totaal 4 complete looks creëren.

Migratie

Ik neem je mee en laat je migratie door mijn ogen beleven.

Je land achterlaten is geen makkelijke beslissing. Je draagt cultuur met je mee, maar je leert ook over nieuwe tradities.

Als alles verloren is waar je je thuis voelt, hoe ga je verder? Wat neem je mee? Wie ben je in dit nieuw hoofdstuk van je leven? Veel vragen die ieder op een andere manier beantwoordt. Mijn manier om dit te uiten is ontwerp!

Who am I?

I am Melisa Monti; 24-year-old Argentine fashion designer/cultural creative.

I also dream a lot, just like you.
I grew up in many countries and that made me rather curious. Last year (2017) I moved back to the Netherlands to follow my dreams of a better world.

After having met many inspiring people over the course of the year, I met Marian Duff (Director MAFB). She believed in my dreams and gave me the opportunity to participate in the Fashion Fest Tropenmuseum edition 2018!

As a creative, I want to make a difference; making products with an eye for the environment, culture and human rights. That is why I am also a peer educator at Amnesty International, where I give workshops on ethnic profiling to MBO students throughout the Netherlands.

Why is your support so important to me?

With your support I can finance the materials for this collection; among other (sustainable) fabrics, buttons, zippers, embroidery thread and printing on my own fabrics.

Also a part goes to a sewing machine, so that I can put everything together with my own hands for Fashion Fest, but also for future projects.

Fashion Fest is a big step in my career; to show myself as a creative in the Dutch industry, and from there to be able to grow in further projects. I work hard for my dreams and ambitions and believe in the power of perseveration.

Fashion Fest

The Fashion Fest Tropenmuseum edition 2018 is a co-creation between MAFB and the Research Center for Material Culture - from the Tropenmuseum, Afrikamuseum and Museum Volkenkunde. In this program, all participants form a team, with each team consisting of a designer, a hairdresser, a make-up artist and 4 models. Together you make a final catwalk show in the Tropenmuseum, where a jury judges participants from all disciplines. The theme of this year is: Refusal and Radical Hope.
As a designer I will create a total of 4 complete looks.

Migration

With my collection I will take you to experience migration through my eyes.

Leaving your country is not an easy decision. You carry culture with you, but you also learn about new traditions.

If everything is lost where you feel at home, how do you go further? What are you taking with you? Who are you in this new chapter of your life? Many questions that each answers in a different way, my way to express this is through design!
