My name is Carlos Delgado Antequera. At the age of 8 I started attending a music school in Málaga (Spain). By then, the violin got my attention thanks to the inspiration of my first dutch teacher,Anja Cardinaal. Three years ago, when I finished my violin’s superior studies in Spain, I decided to move to Netherland and study the viola at the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam (CvA) under the supervision of two enormous professionals of this instrument: Marjolein Dispa and Nobuko Imai.

when I came to Amsterdam as new viola student at the CvA, I didn’t have my own instrument, so the conservatory offered me a renting agreement to use a viola. But at the same time, I was looking for my own viola around the Netherlands, Belgium,Spain…Unfortunately, this is not an easy task. Nobody really knows, until one tries, how difficult is to find "that" instrument which perfectly complements your skills and inspires your musical path.

When you are searching for your instrument many questions came to your mind: "what kind of sound do I like? Do I prefer a heavy or lighter instrument?",how is the projection? "Modern or old? ","Bass or tenor sound?", "What would be the perfect size for me?"... As you can imagine, finding all these qualities on a unique instrument is such a challenge.

Finally, one year ago, the violin’s makers Andrew Finnigan and Pia Klaembt came to Amsterdam to show and repair violas and I had the opportunity to check their works. That was the first contact with, what today is my new instrument. From the very first time I played a few notes on this viola I really fell in love with it. Its measures make it really comfortable to the shape of my hands and very easy to play. Also, it produces an amazing warm sound, with good balance between all the strings and a very good projection when I have played it in the halls. For further details: It is a new instrument inspired by Andrea Guarneri, made in Bremen, Germany and its back’s length is 41.4cm.

Unfortunately, there is a hefty price tag on such a viola. Since I found this instrument, I have put a lot of effort looking for economical support. Luckily I found a society, Stichting Eigen Musik, that could help me with part of the cost, and also my parents and I have been saving money for this occasion, but it is not enough to pay the instrument fully. This is why I am doing this crowdfunding campaigne, to ask you for help to buy my dreamt viola.

Having a good instrument in your hands means a lot to a musician. Automatically your skills improve faster. Since I have this new instrument, I have felt a huge impulse on my progress in relation with my sound, that I wasn’t able to achieve with the other viola. Now, all the effort that I had invested on looking for the perfect sound can be appreciated. Soon, I will be finishing my bachelor degree in viola at the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam. In the meantime, I usually play with different ensembles and orchestras such as Canto Quartet and De Gracthentrio, De Nieuw PhilarmonieUtrecht, De Kamerorkest Van het Noorden, Ciconia Consort, and also performing around Netherland, Mexico, Spain, Portugal and France.

Mi nombre es Carlos Delgado Antequera. A los 8 años comencé a asistir a clases de música en el Conservatorio Eduardo Ocón (Málaga). Por aquel entonces, el violín me cautivó gracias a la influencia de mi primera profesora holandesa, Anja Cardinaal. Hace tres años, cuando finalicé mis estudios de violín en España, decidí mudarme a Holanda y comenzar a estudiar viola en el Conservatorio de Amsterdam (CVA) con dos grandes profesionales de la música: Marjolein Dispa y Nobuko Imai.

Al principio, cuando llegué a Amsterdam como nuevo estudiante del conservatorio, no tenía mi propio instrumento, por lo que la escuela me ofreció el alquiler de una viola. Pero en ese tiempo, viajé Bélgica, Holanda, España… buscando la viola perfecta para mí. Desgraciadamente, encontrar el instrumento que complemente tus habilidades e inspire tu camino musical no es para nada una tarea fácil.

Cuando estás buscando una viola, te vienen a la cabeza muchas preguntas: “ ¿Qué tipo de sonido quiero? ¿prefiero instrumentos pesados o ligeros?, ¿Modernos o antiguos? ,¿ sonido similar al de un violonchelo o al violín? ¿ qué medida es mejor para tus manos?”...como se puede imaginar, encontrar todas estas cualidades en un único instrumento es todo un reto.

Finalmente, hace un año Andrew Finnigan y Pia Klaembt, vinieron a Amsterdam para reparar y exponer sus instrumentos. Este fue mi primer contacto, con lo que hoy en día es mi nuevo instrumento. Desde el primer momento que toqué algunas notas, me quedé boquiabierto y enamorado de esta viola. Las medidas encajan a la perfección con mis manos. Produce un cálido sonido, con gran proyección en las salas pudiendo escuchar con naturalidad los armónicos saliendo del instrumento.

Los instrumentos de cuerda son muy caros. Afortunadamente, encontré una fundación en Amsterdam, Stichting Eigen Musik, que me ayudan a financiar el instrumento, y también mis padres y yo hemos estado ahorrando dinero para esta ocasión, pero aún no es suficiente para pagar el instrumento por completo. Es por eso que estoy haciendo este crowfunding, para pedirle ayuda para comprar mi viola soñada.

Tener un buen instrumento en tus manos significa mucho para un músico. Automáticamente tus habilidades mejoran más rápido. Desde que tengo este nuevo instrumento, he sentido un enorme progreso en relación con mi sonido, que no pude lograr con la otra viola. Ahora, todo el esfuerzo que he invertido en la búsqueda del sonido perfecto se puede apreciar. Este año terminaré mi licenciatura en viola en el Conservatorium Van Amsterdam. Mientras tanto, por lo general toco con diferentes conjuntos y orquestas como Canto Quartet y De Gracthentrio, De Nieuw Philarmonie Utrecht, De Kamerorkest Van het Noorden, Ciconia Consort, y también actuando en Holanda, México, España, Portugal y Francia.
