Daydreaming At Night is a visual collection of moving imagery that shows glimpses of the insomniac’s world; a non lineair timeline wherein the past, present and future echoes all into one dream like haze. While most people are too occupied and tired of the every day life, the sleepless yearn to be part of the mundane again. Days go by from their window watching, minds drifts off into daydreams and broken memories, the sky exchanges colors endlessly, and the morning sunrise greets the same day.
The moving audible imagery showcases the duality of acceptance and grief, desire and daze, and how two ends can exist at the same time, through a play with photography and film.
Director’s message:
The collection takes the viewer into the insomniac’s distorted memory, which is like a haphazard; a puzzle that wasn’t made to fit together, but instead whispers parts of the same. There is this overall constant, quiet yearning to an end, but as the frames loops on, also we start to forget what we were actually longing for.
WHO & WHY?
In 2020, GT suddenly developed insomnia overnight that lasted for around three years. With no direct cause or end date in sight at that time, the only way for her to get through those endless sleepless days, was to view the entire experience as a necessary transformational rebirth. A natural reset that led her to believing that eventually, something out of this dark period must be created. And so, Daydreaming At Night was formed, as the result of days turning into years, of never finding out the exact 'why' to her sleeping problem. Driven by hope, shaped in her daydreams, it was this romanticised idea that kept her going.
With this project, Gia-Tinh aims to shed more light on this relatively misunderstood condition, and to share an important message to those who struggle or has struggled with mental problems. That sometimes, when there is no reason, one might be formed along the way in hindsight.
The creative team consist of creatives with a background in film, photography, set design, sound design and styling. We're very passionate and motivated to bring this multidisciplinary project to life, which is why we are asking for funding and your help in order to be able to use the right equipment and location.
Biography core team:
Gia-Tinh Lam is often seen in front of the cameras, but before her 3 year long cycle of not sleeping, she was actually spending her days on design related projects. Graduated from AMFI as a hybrid creative, positioned somewhere between branding and design, her background varies from head wear design (UNCO), to art directing/assisting fashion start ups, to now freelancing as an accessory designer for Patta. The in between of things interests her, so she naturally takes on this journey of endlessly exploring new opportunities to work around formats, to come up with her own. Daydreaming At Night is the start of a new creative exploration after a few years of reverse hibernation, a reset, which hopefully will lead her to form and shape her wide range of expertises more and more.
The DOP of Daydreaming at Night is Mikela Koressi. Originally from Greece she moved to the Netherlands six years ago to pursue her studies in film and now works full-time as a freelancer. Currently based in Amsterdam with three years of experience in the industry. With a focus in fashion photography, her aim is to create a unique image that clearly translates the vision of the designer/client and has a distinct, out of the mainstream, visual identity. For her personal projects she always tries to find original ways of taking pictures and spend a lot of time studying older photography techniques that can potentially add character and make the process of taking photos more exciting. Quality over quantity is the main motive behind her creative process. She spends a lot of time developing an idea and going over the detailed aspects of a project like creative direction, props and lighting so when the time comes to bring the project to life everyone can focus on perfecting their craft to ensure that the few pictures that will be taken are perfect. This is also why her preferred medium when taking pictures is film (analog).
The producer of Daydreaming at Night is Antigone Pappas. Antigone graduated from the University of Amsterdam with a Masters degree in Film Studies. She has been part of the production team for music videos in Greece and the Netherlands, as well as a short fashion documentary. She has worked on the set of a greek television series and a film sales agency in Amsterdam and is now starting her work full time in the production of creative projects.
