Support the tour of Collegium Musicum!!
From April 27 to May 4, we want to give 115 students who are part of the Leiden Student Choir and Orchestra Collegium Musicum the opportunity to go on an exciting tour. The destination of this tour is the country of culture and good food: Italy. During the tour they will visit the northern Italian cities Riva del Garda, Brescia, Mantua and Milan, and there they will give three concerts.. The tour repertoire includes Schumann's First Symphony and Cherubini's Requiem in c minor. In addition, the chamber choir will also perform during a local mass. The students have been rehearsing these classical pieces since December.
Riva del Garda
On Saturday, April 27, 2024, the students will travel to Riva del Garda by tour bus. . After the long journey, the entire group will stay in a hostel in the center of Riva del Garda.
On Sunday, a first concert will be given in the Parrochia di Santa Maria Assunta, which is a beautiful church next to the hostel. First, the chamber choir will sing in the local mass, after which the choir and orchestra will give their first concert.. This concert, like all the other concerts, will be free to attend: this makes the concert accessible to everyone who wishes to attend.
The next day the students have a rest day. They’ll have the chance to visit the city of the famous love couple Romeo and Juliet, Verona. In addition to the famous balcony that has been brought to life as Juliet's balcony, there is also a beautiful Roman colosseum and a museum with historical and contemporary art.
On Tuesday, April 30, another concert will be given in a church in the nearby city of Mantua, which is about 1.5 hours away by bus. Here is also a part of Romeo and Julia’s love story: here, Romeo was banished from Verona after killing Juliet's cousin Tybalt. Our culturally engaged members will surely enjoy visiting these cultural and literary landmarks.
Milan
On May 1, our journey will continue to the province of Lombardy, where the students will stay in a hostel in Milan until May 4. In contrast to Riva del Garda, Milan is a true metropolis. Members will thus encounter two important sides of Italian culture: a historic small town on the lake, and a big city with a university.
On May 2, we will give our last concert in Brescia, a beautiful city near Milan. We will play in the Duomo Vecchio, the Old Cathedral. The cathedral was built in the year 1100 and has a special round shape. This will surely have some interesting effects on the acoustics during our concert!
On the penultimate day of the tour we want to give the students the freedom to explore Milan. A trip will be organized to the colossal Duomo of Milan, with access to the associated museum and the roof of the church. The roof offers some gorgeous views of the city!
Do you want to help us?
This tour is a unique experience for many members of LSKO Collegium Musicum. In addition to giving concerts at a high musical level, the trip is essential for the social bonds within the association. Members get to know each other even better during the tour, and lifelong friendships are often forged. Members also get the opportunity to discover a new country, and become familiar with its customs and values.
Organizing such a concert trip requires a lot of effort. This is why the association has appointed a committee of 7 volunteers who start setting up this tour a year in advance: the travel committee (Buicie). The organization includes arranging concert locations, sleeping accommodations, tour buses, and transport of instruments. In addition, sheet music, meals, and PR material must be arranged.
The majority of the costs associated with this tour are covered by the membership contribution, but of course we want to keep these as low as possible for our members. The rest of the costs are covered by organized actions such as the organization of Christmas concerts in nursing homes, a fundraising concert, the sale of the renowned Buiciebites (home-baked snacks)during the rehearsal breaks, an Italian running dinner and many more acquisition activities. The tour is also financially supported by funds, including the Leids Universiteits Fonds (LUF).
And finally, we need you, via Voordekunst! A contribution via Voordekunst would help us enormously.
