Deelnemende musea zijn opeenvolgend: Museum of Craft and Design, San Francisco, California (winter 24-voorjaar 25), Weatherspoon Art Museum (zomer 2025), Weisman Art Museum (herft 2025), Pratt Manhattan Gallery, (winter 25 -voorjaar 26)

Help me realise a connecting carpet, donate now!
My name is Liselot Cobelens and in my studio I have spent the past few years working on design objects inspired by the Dutch landscape. The work I create is at the intersection of art and design. Carpet Dryland and the installation Illuminating landscapes have attracted many visitors at Dutch Design Week in recent years. There, using the storytelling carpet, visitors were made aware of the impact of climate change.
Climate change
Droughts and changing climate patterns in the Netherlands and abroad have a major effect on the environment we live in. In the Netherlands, desiccation is a silent killer, leading to divisions in dealing with it. The artworks and products I develop draw attention to climate adaptation issues and spark much-needed conversation.
The carpet Dryland was published in Dezeenin 2021, and soon after came a request for this project to come to the United States. Museum of Craft & Design will organise a one-and-a-half-year travelling exhibition called Rug Life from the end of 2024.
California is the state where the exhibition will start. It is one of the states in the US where climate change is felt most acutely. There are ten different climate zonesOverall, there is a severe shortage of meltwater, resulting in droughts, devastating fires, loss in biodiversity and unfair distribution of freshwater. Yet it is found difficult to understand the stories of change. That is why I am committed to developing this tapestry. This gives insight into the story of the landscape and brings together different perspectives. At the same time, I explore what we as Dutch society can learn from indigenous culture and Americans - and what Americans can learn from us?
What happens with the money raised?
The project is already supported by NAF and Gemeente 's Hertogenbosch, but unfortunately this is not enough. On the one hand, the money raised will be used to realise the carpet. Think of making test pieces and final production. On the other hand, it will be used to research the area with the issue and compile the results into a podcast and a self-published publication.
I will make the podcast available online for visitors in the US. In addition, after the exhibition, the aim is to highlight the project in the Netherlands through lectures and exhibitions.
About the exhibition in the US
The time span of the touring exhibition is about 17 months. Participating museums are consecutively: Museum of Craft and Design, San Francisco, California (winter 24-voorjaar 25), Weatherspoon Art Museum (zomer 2025), Weisman Art Museum (herft 2025), Pratt Manhattan Gallery, (winter 25 -voorjaar 26)
Would you like to help?
I hope you would like to help make the stories from the changing landscape understandable and discussable through a tapestry, thus mitigating polarising discussions and making room for a common approach to the out-of-control desiccation. The landscape is changing before our eyes and it is important to share knowledge about it for a more liveable world.
