ENGLISH
What does the future of comics in the Netherlands look like? In "This Body of Ours," we - a queer group of nine young comic artists - answer this question with a rebellious, queer, and colorful collection of crazy, beautiful, tender (and sometimes even sexy!) stories!
The book will be both a manifesto from the new generation to the old guard and a plea from the neglected child of the art world to society at large, representing our vision for the future of the comic world: diverse, queer, open, critical, but above all full of PASSION and FUN.
THE FUTURE OF COMICS
As young comic artists, we know all too well how challenging it can be in the cultural industry.
According to research, the Dutch comic industry struggles with a lack of interest, professional opportunities, and chances for collaborations. An important part of this is that paid jobs and positions do not pass on to young creators.
This hampers the development and diversity of the field because new comic creators cannot make a living from comics and invest much less time in them.
Initiatives are being taken, but we still often lack dedication to professionalization and fair compensation, opportunities that give young creators experience in decision-making positions, and attention to queer voices within the future of the field. We want to address these three points in one project.
CADAVRE EXQUIS
"This Body of Ours" will be a Dutch-language anthology of approximately 108 pages. Eight comic artists will each develop a visual story, while the ninth artist, along with our designer, will focus on the book's layout.
Too often, comics only receive attention when they are educational or informative. In "This Body," the artists have had the freedom to decide exactly which stories they want to tell. As such, the book will be pulpy, funny, intimate, and yes, maybe even pornographic!
To lend some sense to this colorful and diverse book we have used 'the body' as a structuring metaphor. This gives us three 'chapters': Head, Heart, and Legs. This way, we get stories that make us think, stories that emotionally touch us, and stories that help us face the future. The comic anthology thus forms a cadavre exquis of our group.
For these young artists, the project offers an opportunity for experience and artistic growth in a professional, paid context. It's a chance to work freely and experimentally and to develop a confidence in the future of comics in the Netherlands.
SUPPORT
Fortunately, there has already been a lot of support: the Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie, the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts, and the Pictoright Fund have recognized the value of our project and are financially supporting us. This has allowed us to fairly compensate all the artists and the designer for their work on research, style, and text development, as well as a first version of all pages.
Now we want to ask for direct help from the communities we are part of: comics artists, the queer community, and all the dear family and friends who support us.
Help us with the final stretch!
Your money will go to:
-
The artists! Color, text, and the final adjustments to the pages still need to be made so they are print-ready with a professional finish.
-
Printing costs! We will print the book at a veteran of the Amsterdam squatter scene - the environmentally conscious Drukkerij Raaddraaier - on beautiful paper, and professionally bind it.
-
Distribution! To give the book a flying start in life and to begin a bright future for the Dutch comic world, we want to spread our message as far and wide as possible! This means a festive launch at Comic Shop Lambiek, transportation of the books, but also a PR campaign in which we arrange interviews, reviews, and features on various platforms (and thus further build the professional networks of our comic artists) and organize events at festivals around the themes of the book. For example, we have been invited to determine part of the program at Stripdagen Haarlem.
By financially supporting us, you haven't just contributed to our campaign; you've been part of creating something special. Thank you, forever, on behalf of the team of comics artists.
