THE DANGERS OF VINYL

Have you ever stopped to consider the medium that you use to listen to your favorite music? Streaming services, mp3 players, cd’s, tapes or of course vinyl records are common for people to use every day. Especially vinyl is making a big comeback, as it is both a nostalgic collectors item and it is a way to directly support the musicians you’re a fan of. Many people also consider it to be a superior audio format to digital.

But did you know that vinyl is extremely harmful to both the environment and to your health? Vinyl is made of polyvinyl chloride, or PVC for short. PVC has been described as one of the most toxic plastics mankind has ever made. In the past decades many restrictions have been made to the use of PVC in building materials in our homes, such as pipes or flooring. Even though it is absolutely best not to use it at all, it has been made less harmful and more durable over time (if you have PVC water pipes have someone look at them immediately).

However there is one industry where none of these restrictions are mandatory. You guessed it! The music industry. Your vinyl collection is killing you. The older your vinyl is, the more harmful gasses it releases into your house when it comes into contact with oxygen, through a process called degassing. (New vinyl definitely also does this though) PVC has been linked to lung cancer, liver cancer, brain cancer, breast cancer, nerve damage, among many other things. And that is not even taking into account the extremely toxic heavy metals such as lead and cadmium that is often used to stabilize it.

WHY IS NOTHING CHANGING?

So now you’re probably thinking: “Damn I have to get rid of my vinyl collection!”, well don’t do that. It’s toxic in your home, but it’s way more toxic if left to degrade over time in a landfill.

Considering all this, you’re probably wondering why the heck we are still using vinyl? We thought that too, but sadly the dangers of vinyl are hardly known. We’ve talked with many people about the project we’re running (it’s got something to do with biodegradable plant based records by the way), and no one that we spoke to had any idea that the music they love is harming them and the planet.

If we don’t boycott PVC, the music industry will never change. Because why change if you’re still making buckets of money selling poison to music lovers?

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO?

That’s why we’re setting an example. We’re going to press our debut album on, clean biodegradable plant based plastics.

Through pioneering companies such as Evolution Music, new technology has been developed to press records on plant based plastics (don’t worry it won’t degrade on your shelf and the audio quality is just as good). With your help we’re going to use these plastics instead of vinyl as one of the first bands in the world and definitely one of the first bands in the Netherlands.

DE GEVAREN VAN VINYL

Heb je wel eens nagedacht over het medium dat je gebruikt om naar je favoriete muziek te luisteren? Streaming services, mp3 spelers, cd’s, cassettes en vinyl platen gebruiken mensen elke dag. Zeker vinyl is weer razend populair aan het worden aangezien het zowel een nostalgisch collectors item is, als een directe manier om je favoriete muzikanten te steunen. Bovendien vinden veel mensen het een superieur medium aan digitaal.

Maar wist je dat vinyl extreem schadelijk is voor zowel het milieu als je gezondheid. Vinyl is namelijk gemaakt van polyvinyl chloride, oftewel PVC. PVC is omschreven als één van de meest schadelijke plastics die de mens ooit heeft ontwikkeld. In de afgelopen decennia zijn er veel wetten aangenomen die het gebruik van PVC in bouw materialen restricties opleggen. Bouwmaterialen zoals waterleidingen en PVC vloer bedekking. Alhoewel het absoluut het beste is omhelemaal geen PVC te gebruiken, wordt het nu duurzamer en minder schadelijk gemaakt. (als je PVC waterleidingen hebt, is het het beste om ze onmiddellijk te laten checken)

Echter is er één industrie waar nauwelijks tot geen restricties zijn voor PVC. Je raad het al! De muziek industrie. Jouw vinyl collectie is je langzaam maar zeker je grafkist in aan het werken. Hoe ouder je vinyl is hoe meer schadelijke stoffen het los laat in je huis, zodra het in contact komt met zuurstof. Dit proces wordt ontgassen genoemd (nieuw vinyl doet dit echter zeker ook).
PVC wordt gelinkt aan onder andere, long kanker, lever kanker, brein kanker, borstkanker, zenuw beschadiging, maar de lijst gaat door. Dit zonder dat stoffen als lood en cadmium in acht worden genomen, die vaak gebruikt worden om het te stabiliseren.

Waarom veranderd er niks?

Nu denk je waarschijnlijk: “Verdomme, ik moet van m’n platencollectie af.” Maar gooi het vooral niet weg, want als je denkt dat het schadelijk is in je huis, dat is niks bij hoe toxisch het is als het breekt of langzaam wegrot op eenvuilnisbelt.

Dus waaromgebruiken we nog vinyl? Dat vroegen wij ons ook af. Maar eigenlijk is er onder muziekliefhebbers vrijwel niks bekend over de gevaren van vinyl.
We hebben de afgelopen tijd met veel mensen gepraat over dit project (het heeft trouwens iets te maken met groen bio plastic platen), maar niemand had enig idee dat hun muziek collectie zowel hun als de planeet aan het beschadigen was.

Als we vinyl platen niet boycotten, dan zal de muziek industrie nooit veranderen. Want waarom zouden ze als ze bakken met geld verdienen door vergif aan muziekliefhebbers te verkopen?

WAT GAAN WIJ DOEN?

Dat is waarom wij een voorbeeld willen zijn. Wij gaan ons debuut album persen opgroen, natuurlijk afbreekbaar bio plastic.

Door vernieuwende bedrijven zoals Evolution Music, is er nieuwe technologie ontwikkeld om platen te maken van bio plastics (geen zorgen het zal niet in je kast verrotten en de audio kwaliteit is hetzelfde).
En met jouw hulp gaan we deze technologie gebruiken om één van de eerste in de wereld en zeker één vande eerste in Nederland te zijn om een album te persen zonder PVC te gebruiken.
