The Royal Wind Music brengt een album uit met repertoire van Nederlands beroemdste componist, zoals u het nog nooit eerder heeft gehoord! Ons ensemble wordt vaak vergeleken met een ‘wandelend orgel’, en daarom zet de wijdverbreide roem van Jan Pieterszoon Sweelincks orgelspel in de Oude Kerk te Amsterdam ons aan om zijn prachtige composities voor toetsinstrumenten zelf te interpreteren. Maar ook Sweelincks vocale muziek past het consort van The Royal Wind Music als een handschoen. Onze instrumenten, gebouwd door Adriana Breukink, Bob Marvin, Monika Musch en Adrian Brown bootsen prachtig de omvang en klankkleur van een koor na.

Dit nieuwe programma weerspiegelt dus de breedte van Sweelincks veelzijdige oeuvre, maar naast enkele van zijn meest geliefde instrumentale en vocale werken, introduceren we ook hedendaagse reflecties op zijn muziek, die ons volop in het (Amsterdam van) hier en nu brengen. Aspasia Nasopoulou componeerde speciaal voor The Royal Wind Music de fantasie ‘Dans voor Orpheus van Amsterdam’, waarin bovendien instrumentale en vocale muziek tot één geheel worden gesmolten door de bijdrage van blokfluitist én sopraansolist Irene Sorozábal. Sweelincks bekende stuk ‘Mein junges Leben hat ein End’ is de inspiratie voor de moderne soundscape Kettingreactie, een gezamenlijke groepsimprovisatie naar idee van de maker van dit programma Hester Groenleer.

Uw donatie wordt direct ingezet voor de praktische kant van deze opname: uw geld gaat naar de huur van de prachtige opnamelocatie die we hebben gevonden, en onze geweldige geluidstechnicus moet worden bekostigd voor de opnamedagen, de editing en mastering.

De opnames vinden plaats van 13-16 november 2023 in de Doopsgezinde kerk in Haarlem.

With The Royal Wind Music, we will make the music of the most famous composer of the Netherlands sound like it never sounded before. Our ensemble is often compared to a "walking organ”. The idea of how the ‘Sweelinck Organ’ sounded in his own hands in the Old Church in Amsterdam stimulates our interpretation of his beautiful keyboard works. His vocal works are equally suitable for our much loved interpretations of vocal polyphony. Performed on our instruments built by Adriana Breukink, Bob Marvin, Monika Musch and Adrian Brown we can beautifully imitate the timbre of a choir.

This new programme reflects the breadth of Sweelinck’s diverse oeuvre. But not only will we introduce some of our most favourite keyboard and vocal works of the master: contemporary reflections on Sweelinck's music will contextualise these early works and transport us to the Amsterdam of today. The ‘fantasy’ Dance for Orpheus of Amsterdam, originally composed for us by Aspasia Nasopoulou, is a contemporary comment and amalgamation of instrumental and vocal playing, scored for four recorders with one of the players (Irene Sorozábal) doubling as a soprano soloist to boot. An improvisatory soundscape called Chain Reaction is a musical interplay and modern take on the theme of Mein Junges Leben hat ein End, one of Sweelinck’s most famous works.

We have found a beautiful church to record this disk, but will need to cover the costs for renting it. Our trusted sound technician Andrea Friggi will need to be paid for the recording and editing of this recording.

The recording will take place from 13-16 November in the Doopsgezinde Kerk in Haarlem, right after a tour with this programme to Italy and Austria.
