Berlage di Nusantara - from 1923 to 2023

Een vertaling en nieuwe vertelling van een vergeten koloniaal verhaal: help ons Berlages reisdagboek uit 1923 naar het nu te brengen en óók in Indonesië te delen.

Er gaan nu 150 exemplaren in de voorverkoop, en we zoeken daarnaast 150 donateurs die een boek willen sponsoren voor Indonesische studenten.

Mijn Indische Reis - 1923

Precies een eeuw geleden ging voor Hendrik Petrus Berlage (1856 - 1934), één van Nederlands' meest geroemde architecten, een grote wens in vervulling: eindelijk kon hij op reis naar Nederlands-Indië! Hij vertrok vanuit Genua met het stoomschip de SS Grotius en voer in ruim drie weken naar Batavia. Vervolgens reisde hij drie maanden lang per trein, auto en boot door Java, Bali en Sumatra. Dit was een diepgaande ervaring. Berlage pent gedurende de hele tocht ijverig zijn indrukken, observaties en zelfs gedichten neer in een dagboek, dat hij uiteindelijk in 1931 publiceert onder de titel Mijn Indische Reis.

Nu, precies honderd jaar later, gaan we opnieuw met Berlage op reis. De observaties die hij in zijn reisdagboek maakt zijn weer - of eigenlijk nog steeds - heel actueel. Jammer genoeg is het boek in de vergetelheid geraakt en zelfs nooit vertaald naar het Indonesisch. Wij - een zevenkoppig team van professionals uit de culturele en creatieve sector - zien hierin een unieke kans om Berlages draad 100 jaar later weer op te pakken en op zijn reis voort te borduren. Hoog tijd om Mijn Indische Reis af te stoffen en te vertalen: letterlijk, naar het Indonesisch en Engels, en figuurlijk, naar de 21ste eeuw als Berlage di Nusantara.

Berlage di Nusantara is meer dan een nostalgische trip naar het verleden: het is een nieuwe, creatieve herinterpretatie van een 100-jaar oud dagboek met een kritische blik op het heden.

Met het boek Berlage di Nusantara gaan we 100 jaar later opnieuw op reis. We doken de archieven in om Berlages reis te reconstrueren. We verzamelden de meest verrassende en controversiële fragmenten uit zijn dagboek, en vroegen we bekende Nederlanders en Indonesiërs om hun reactie. Zo werden Berlages citaten een eeuw later aanknopingspunten voor zeer actuele onderwerpen zoals culturele identiteit, diversiteit en dekolonisatie.

De 2023 editie van Berlages reisdagboek gaat verschijnen in het Nederlands, Engels en Indonesisch zodat we ons gedeeld erfgoed ook écht met elkaar kunnen delen. Ons doel is dat 150 exemplaren van ons boek terecht komen bij culturele instellingen, universiteiten en bibliotheken door heel Indonesië. Ook willen we een gratis PDF versie beschikbaar stellen voor studenten. Hiervoor hebben we jouw hulp en die van 149 andere donateurs nodig.

Het boek - Berlage di Nusantara

Berlage di Nusantara is geen simpele samenvatting en ook geen volledige vertaling van Berlages trip. Het is een zorgvuldig samengestelde en rijk geïllustreerde nieuwe interpretatie van zijn oude reisdagboek, bestaande uit drie delen:

• 1. Mijn Indische Reis - We brengen een reizende Berlage uit 1923 tot leven in 2023. Wat Berlage observeert gaat over zoveel meer dan architectuur. Terwijl hij het land verkent met verschillende brillen op — de reiziger, de architect, de denker en de criticus — ontmoeten we de mens achter de beroemde meesterbouwer. Door Berlages citaten in hun historische en geografische context te plaatsen, kwamen er vele vragen naar boven, waar we vervolgens ingedoken zijn. Niet met het doel alle antwoorden te vinden, maar om Berlages draad 100 jaar later weer op te pakken en voort te borduren op zijn reis.

• 2. Berlage op Reis - We reconstrueren en geven context aan zijn reis. Er werd in Indonesië reikhalzend uitgekeken naar de komst van de grote architect. Berlages reisschema (een lezingenreeks, bijeenkomsten, opdrachten) in diverse steden was dan ook zorgvuldig voorbereid. Hij ontmoette collega-architecten, koloniale functionarissen, Indonesische aristocraten en natuurlijk (familie)vrienden. Maar ook nam hij de tijd om wat langer op bepaalde plekken te blijven en geestverwanten te bezoeken. We zijn de archieven ingedoken op zoek naar historische foto’s, brieven en andere afbeeldingen van gebouwen, situaties en plekken die hij in zijn dagboek beschrijft om zo zijn reis te reconstrueren.

• 3. Jouw Indische Reis - We gaan in gesprek met Berlage. Berlages schetsen en quotes zijn meer dan alleen een stuk erfgoed, ze zijn ook een vertrekpunt voor een discussie over actuele vraagstukken. We hebben in Indonesië en in Nederland twintig bijzondere mensen gevonden — van artiesten tot ambassadeurs — en hen uitgenodigd om te reageren op Berlages overpeinzingen. In persoonlijke bijdrages gaan ze als het ware met hem in gesprek, en door hun inzichten en verhalen gaan we in 2023 opnieuw met Berlage op reis.

Waarom dit boek?

Verrijkt met Berlages originele schetsen, oude prenten en nieuwe handgetekende illustraties, is dit 300-pagina tellende boek een prachtig exemplaar voor op de koffietafel en ook een mooi en attent cadeau. Maar ook willen we...

...gedeeld erfgoed delen
Berlage schrijft lyrisch over zijn 'beloofde land', het is zonde dat zijn pennevruchten nooit zijn vertaald in het Indonesisch. Wij hopen dat onze vertaalde, nieuwe versie van Berlages reisdagboek Indonesische studenten een hernieuwde mogelijkheid geeft om meer te leren over de oude meester, zijn Indonesische erfenis en zijn welbespraakte ode aan de artistieke traditie en cultuur in de voormalige Nederlandse kolonie.

...de dialoog aangaan
Berlages citaten uit 1923 blijken verassend mooie aanknopingspunten voor de actuele discussies over onderwerpen als culturele identiteit, een inclusieve samenleving, duurzaam bouwen en (de)kolonisatie. In ons nieuwe boek worden de meest interessante, verrassende, én controversiële fragmenten uit Berlages reisdagboek in de schijnwerpers gezet, samen met de reflecties van (bekende) Nederlanders en Indonesiërs. Ook horen we graag (via social media en op evenementen) wat jij van Berlages ideeën en observaties vindt. Met een frisse blik gaan we zo samen op zoek naar 'de andere kant' van het verhaal om zo wellicht een nieuwe draai te geven aan het post-koloniale debat.

...één van Berlages gebouwen van de ondergang behoeden
Weinig mensen weten dat er in Indonesië twee gebouwen staan die door Berlage zijn ontworpen: Gedung Algemeene/Gedung Singa in Surabaya, voltooid in 1901, en Gedung Nederlanden van 1845 in Jakarta uit 1913. Gedung Singa — oftewel 'het huis met de leeuwen' — is er niet best aan toe. Jarenlange leegstand en verwaarlozing eisen hun tol en Berlages erfenis is langzaam maar zeker in elkaar aan het storten. We hopen dat dit boek ook de lokale discussie over het opknappen en hergebruik van het pand kan aanzwengelen, zodat er geld en energie beschikbaar komt om dit pareltje in het centrum van Surabaya weer te laten schitteren.

My Journey to the Indies - 1923

Exactly a century ago, Hendrik Petrus Berlage (1856 - 1934), one of the Netherlands' most renowned architects, saw one of his biggest dreams come true: finally, it was time to venture eastwards! In Genoa, he boarded a steamer, the SS Grotius, bound for Batavia, which he reached in just over three weeks. He then spent the next three months traversing Java, Bali and Sumatra by train, car and boat. It truly was a journey of a lifetime: while travelling, the architect sees himself falling in love with the archipelago. He diligently jotted down his impressions and observations in a journal, which he would eventually condense into 147 pages and publish in 1931 as Mijn Indische Reis ('My Journey to the Indies').

It may have been a hundred years since Berlage went on his adventure to the then-Dutch East Indies, but his observations in Mijn Indische Reis are again - or should we say, still - incredibly relevant. ​We - a seven-strong bilateral team of professionals working in the cultural and creative sectors - strongly feel that reviving Berlage's 1923 trip is a great way to address today's hot topics such as cultural identity, diversity, sustainable building, and (de)colonisation in the Netherlands and Indonesia. Tapping into a growing interest in (colonial) history and heritage in Indonesia and the Netherlands, Berlage's journey could also bring a fresh perspective to the special connection between our two countries. So, it's high time to dust off Mijn Indische Reis and translate it, literally and figuratively, to Indonesian and English and to the 21st century as Berlage di Nusantara.

The project - Berlage di Nusantara

Berlage's travel journal is a remarkable publication filled with stunning sketches and even a dozen poems. It is also a powerful exhibit of Berlage's pronounced ideas on culture and society. He addresses his views on historic and contemporary architecture and his culture-philosophical contemplations and foresight, as is expected from the master builder and mentor.

However, Berlage also offers the reader an intimate glimpse into his personality. He shares surprisingly candid statements and feelings on Western superiority, embarrassing compatriots, colonialism, tourism, and identity. His observations get bolder throughout his trip: wonder makes way for admiration, and astonishment finally evolves into bewilderment.

We take Berlage's sketches and quotes as a starting point for a series of activities to bring his adventure to life. As a start, we want to publish the 2023 edition of the book in three languages: Dutch, Indonesian and English. And because we find it important to share this piece of shared heritage, we also want to make 150 copies available to cultural institutions, libraries and universities with a complimentary PDF version for students.

The book - Berlage di Nusantara

Our ‘Indische Reis 2.0’ is not a summary nor a complete analysis of Berlage’s trip: it is a carefully curated new edition of the old journal, comprising three parts:

• 1. My journey to the Indies - We bring a travelling Berlage to life in 1923. We selected the most interesting quotes, thought-provoking passages, and eye-catching sketches from the original travel journal. These take centre stage in this new edition of the diary. His writings are about so much more than just architecture; we get to meet the person Berlage as he explores the country through different lenses: as a traveller, an architect, a thinker and a critic. We added historical context and commentary and dived into some compelling questions. Not to find all the answers but to continue Berlage’s legacy.

• 2. Berlage en Route – We reconstruct his journey and put it into context. Berlage’s itinerary was meticulously planned and filled with talks, visits and meetings in different cities. His arrival was eagerly awaited, and he had the opportunity to meet fellow architects, family friends, colonial officials, and Indonesian aristocracy. He even went out of his way to see like-minded spirits and linger a bit longer in places he liked. We searched the archives for photos, letters, postcards and visuals of buildings, situations and places he writes about to reconstruct his journey and the people he met on the way.

• 3. Your journey to the Indies – A conversation with Berlage. The purpose of this project is to continue spinning the threads of Berlage’s thoughts where he left them. That’s why we invited twenty great minds in the Netherlands and Indonesia - from singers to street artists and architects to ambassadors – to ponder Berlage’s thoughts and provide their reflections so we could relive his journey in 2023.

The Indonesian edition will provide students in Indonesia with a unique opportunity to learn about the old master, his Indonesian architectural legacy and his personal testimony to the artistic tradition and culture in the former Dutch colony.

…engage in the dialogue about today’s urgent issues
Berlage’s century-old viewpoints have proven to be great conversation starters for today’s debate about cultural identity, inclusive society, sustainable building and even (de)colonisation. We’ve picked out the most relevant, surprising and controversial fragments from his original journal and added personal reflections from influential and interesting Indonesian and Dutch people. Also, through events and social media, there is ample space to share your views. Together, with a fresh lens, we follow under-explored narratives and dive into ‘the other side’ of history to fuel the debate and perhaps change the post-colonial discourse.

…save Berlage’s building in Surabaya
Few people know that there are two buildings designed by Berlage in Indonesia: Gedung Algemeene (also known as 'Gedung Singa'), built in 1901 in Surabaya. and Gedung Nederlanden van 1845 in Jakarta, completed in 1913. Sadly, Gedung Singa - which translates to 'the house with the lions' - is in a sorry state. Years of neglect have taken their toll, and Berlage’s architectural legacy is starting to fall apart. We hope this book can bring renewed attention to Gedung Singa and refuel the debate on revitalising and repurposing this hidden gem in the centre of Surabaya.
