ABOUT ME
My name is Hanna Hrabarska, I'm a photographer and artist from Kyiv, Ukraine.
In 2022 I fled the war together with my mother Iryna, and after two weeks on a road we finally came to the Netherlands, where we have lived for almost 1,5 years now.
Before Russia invaded Ukraine, I was running a small portrait studio in Kyiv, and traveled around the world with musicians as a tour photographer.
I also teach photography in the international school of creative industries SKVOT.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
“I’m curious, how were people feeling and what were they doing the day before the Second World War?”
I thought about it for a moment.
“Well, I don’t know,” I told my friend. “Probably, the same as us.”
Early the next morning, I was lying in bed in complete darkness. I turned on my phone, as I always do. The news declared: “Putin Invades Ukraine.”
Clueless about the future, I went from Kyiv to my hometown Kryvyi Rih to pick up my mother, and in a course of following week I abandoned my two homes: a little cozy
apartment in the capital's city center, that I bought just a couple years ago, and my mother's home, where I was born and raised, and where I was coming back every month to spend time with my parents.
Through Uzhgorod, Mali Selmentsi, Kosice, Budapest, Munich, the road brought me and my mom to The Netherlands, where we started our new life as war refugees.
Since the very beginning of our journey, I have been taking photos of my mother. Everything seemed so surreal, that I wanted to capture our moments on a road as proof that it’s actually happening.
The process of taking photos also served as a distraction and gave a sense of control - among the chaos and uncertainty, there was something I could be sure about - my pictures.
I published some of them on Instagram, and our little family story was immediately picked up by big media, such as NRCand Die ZEIT.
Today, “My Mom Wants To Go Back Home” is a big documentary project that was exhibited in tens of countries around the world and published in numerous media.
The project won an open-call by FotoDok, and will be shown in Utrecht next year.
But now, it’s time to give it the shape of a book.

HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT MY BOOK?
This photo project means the world to me, and I can’t wait to hold the book “My Mom Wants To Go Back Home” in my hands.
I collaborated with an award-winning book design studio MainStudio to make sure this book will be an amazing art object, and a writer and philosopher Michiel Schwarz who will help to edit my diary entries that will be included alongside photographs.
The book will be released by Dutch publishing house Jap Sam Books.
We want this book to be as amazing as possible. Design, printing, binding require funds. Producing a photo book is expensive.
So, this project can’t be complete without your generous help and support.
Preorder the book, donate or buy one of the special limited edition fine art prints, produced by KieKie Lab. Or book a portrait photoshoot with me!
I will be enormously happy and grateful, if you decide to support me.
