A CROWD FOR MERAKI

We praten graag over onze creatieve projecten.
The MERAKI Collective
‘The Meraki collective started its experimental journey in 2018 at Kijitonyama, Dar es Salaam. They found themselves connected to the Greek word Meraki, which means doing something with so much love you leave a piece of your soul behind in it. A collective of ideas resulting in a visual utopia, created by a group of Tanzanian youth working in different disciplines such as fashion, performance, visual art, music, lifestyle and creative direction. They create an endless portal of transcendence rooted in black culture, black history and black love. ‘Our aim is to express voices coming from the streets of Dar es Salaam city. In the worlds conceived through our imagery, being is a radical act.’ Their visual content aims to start conversation, the clothing collections carry their stories. The scope, variety and inventiveness of what they create challenges generalized conceptions of youth, sexuality, gender, joy and status. They succeed in creating moments steeped in a secure, collective, timelessness - a space for existing as a reality of history - one that goes beyond background or status. The approach of the collective remains inviting by channeling these aspirations toward conceptions of abundance that are free from consumption, accumulation or conquest. In other words — free from fear.’
ABOUT

A CROWD FOR MERAKI
Meraki means leaving a part of yourself behind in the work you do: you make something with so much love and care that in the process you leave a piece of your soul behind. My name is Coosje Froentjes and I am a self-taught photographer. I would like to ask for your time regarding my work and specifically for this special photo project 'Meraki' which I am developing together with Emmanuel T' Chawi; creative director of the Meraki Collective in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. For the actual execution of this plan I have to rely on others financially. That is why I'm asking for your help through crowdfunding. I do this with timidity, but also with great pride because I feel strongly connected to this project and I really want to realize this photo series. The total project costs are estimated at 25,000 euros, of which my goal is to raise at least 11,000 through this platform for the realization of the photo series. An explanation of what the project entails, means for us and what the costs cover follows.
VURDU, EMMANUEL AND COOSJE
First I would like to tell you a little more about our photo project Meraki, how I feel connected to it and why it is important to share this story with you. For that I would like to take you to my introduction and history with Vurdu, the founder of the 'Meraki Collective' in Dar es Salaam.
2018, through Instagram I got in touch with a young Tanzanian designer and the founder of Meraki, Saddam K. Ngairo, named Vurdu by friends. He did not have access to much and designed special hats from local materials. Never have I spoken to someone who had so little at his disposal and had such endless drive and talent. Everything he didn't have around him, was seen as an opportunity to grow and dream in his head. We saw a similar visual identity in each other's work and decided to collaborate on a project. He shipped his designs to the Netherlands, where I photographed them for him. Ironically, we together chose the concept of cultural appropriation. It is both sad and beautiful that creative dialogue has to be found outside Tanzania. I will stick to these words before this takes the form of a thesis. Both of us had extremely different references to understand the world. It was special how we discovered while collaborating that we spoke the same language, regardless of our background and possessions. The language of fantasy and art, creation and hope, understanding and possibility. We became friends, were talking every day and had a creative connection.
Our goal was to continue working together in the future and to visually connect our different worlds. It turned out differently. In 2019 through Emmanuel, one of his best friends - and creative director of Meraki - I was told that Vurdu had suddenly died of malaria. A reality that I was close to but at the same time physically very far from. Vurdu was gone, someone I had never met in person, but with whom I had developed a special working relationship and friendship. It was difficult to grief this unexpected loss, there was no one in the Netherlands who had ever experienced him. Luckily, friends of his collective started contacting me to talk about Vurdu's life, burial, their memories and our friendship. Since then I am in close contact with Emmanuel. We like to talk about our creative projects. We have also not been able to meet each other in the past 4 years, but have been fantasising about a collaboration for the photo series in Dar Es Salaam for years. There is a great urgency to share and capture their special story in this photo project. The group of friends does everything they can to keep the collective active. Despite the not always ideal circumstances and the loss, they remain focused on creation and growth. What connects me with Meraki is that their fantasy is reality, sadness is a strength and their reality is uncertain but moldable. With what they have at their disposal, namely the freedom of thought, there are no limits to adding beauty to life. Because of hard work, their dreams take shape in visual reality: Vurdu his dreams. What he has left behind in his friends deserves a platform and I would like to capture this together with the energetic group. You understand, the Meraki photo series is a personal project for me and it is my deep wish to make it come true. An ode to someone who cannot tell his own story. I hope you can support us to make this dream a reality and we promise to leave a part of our soul behind in this project.
What does the project include?
Content focus of the project: I will immerse myself in the visually created world of Meraki, which uses the city of Dar Es Salaam as a backdrop. The photo series is of course about the loss of Vurdu, but will focus on the beautiful things he left behind and built up. The part of his soul that was left behind, namely the identity of his brand. I would like to follow in Vurdu's footsteps and experience and capture his loving and lively environment for the first time. The plan is to create a personal and heartfelt portrait series of the group of friends who run the collective, following and capturing them as they go about their daily activities. In this photo series, their fantasy becomes reality: their escape is reality. Together with Emmanuel's styling and modeling team, the fully staged Tanzanian Meraki fashion identity will become intertwined with personal documentary work in this project.
I need funds to realize this project. To invest in the people in Dar Es Salaam who work for the Meraki Collective, for the services they provide in this partnership. In order to take their strong vision a step further by giving them more room for, for example, investing in decor, material, etc. Paying the Tanzanian models, renting a studio in Dar Es Salaam, material costs, accommodation, catering for the various shoot days with the ultimate goal of printing the prints for local exhibition and display in the Netherlands. To lay the first foundation for a longer collaboration. All the people that have contributed to the realisation of this photo series will be mentioned during the exhibitions. I hope to be able to shoot this series in fall and as an indication the exhibitions would show the beginning of next year.
ABOUT
Where we see more, because we stand still. Coosje Froentjes explores the boundary between the actual world and fantasy with her photography. She longs to integrate the two and is always looking for imagination within reality itself. Within the moldability of her own visual world, she tries to start a dialogue between familiar and strange, between past and future. Photography is a way of whispering to her. Even more sharp than shouting, it enters the ear softly, but manages to envelop and lock itself in, because soft words you hold closer. It intrigues her to combine images of various people and moments. This creates a merged universal language in which everyone's given situation, facts, values and complications disappear. There is space for the reality and value of everyone's dream. By understanding each other's imagination and sharing it with one another, a unique connection and intimacy is created within her collaborations and clientele: the construction of a collective dream. This way she hopes to be able to add and see more hope and beauty in reality itself, than to escape it…
‘Within my photography I am always looking for new enriching translations of our sometimes disturbing reality. I use the medium as a form of tender communication, in which people with different perspectives try to tell each other something. In which beauty will be preserved forever. In photography you can say something that goes beyond words. By uniting and immortalising people, places, times, emotions, cultures, dreams and reality.”
