Het verhaal
Ons project is een korte documentaire waarin we de transformatie van een stadspark en in het bijzonder één boom observeren. Het verhaal van een iep in Amsterdam Noord is op zijn eigen manier intrigerend, maar is ook een kans om na te denken over het grotere geheel: wat bomen werkelijk voor ons betekenen en hoe we ons hiertoe verhouden. We willen de verschillende manieren begrijpen waarop we bomen kunnen waarderen, maar verkennen ook de ambivalente relatie tussen mens en natuur.

De aanpak
We zijn aan deze filmische reis begonnen, omdat we een onderwerp wilden verkennen dat voor ons belangrijk is. De film is een mix van een artistieke documentaire en het wetenschappelijke genre.

Het filmproces is afgerond: we hebben verschillende wetenschappers en experts geïnterviewd die hun standpunt inbrengen op het gebied van de relatie tussen mensen en het groene leven. Van een lokale gemeenschap tot de visie vanuit de Gemeente, van de dendrochronoloog die het verleden bestudeert middels jaarringen tot de futuristische projectie van groen leven in de ruimte: de documentaire is een film waarin verrassende stemmen vertegenwoordigd zijn.

De reis van ons project
Momenteel starten we met de postproductiefase, waarin de film vorm begint te krijgen. Tijdens de montagefase combineren we de observaties die de transformatie van het park laten zien met de getuigenissen van de wetenschappers. We gebruiken archiefmateriaal en microscoopbeelden verkregen met de hulp van de Universiteit van Arizona. We kijken ernaar uit om een ​​eclectisch maar alomvattend verhaal op te bouwen dat uiteindelijk iets meer over onszelf kan onthullen en hoe we ons verhouden tot het groene leven.

Met het filmidee waren we één van de winnaars van de ESA New Worlds Film Competition. Omdat onze film verder reikt dan alleen groen leven op aarde.

Het grootste deel van de financiering voor de realisatie van de film is inmiddels gerealiseerd: het Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst en het Cultuurfonds steunen het project.

Wat we nog nodig hebben
Wij hebben jouw hulp nodig om de film op een niveau te brengen dat de vertoning op het grote scherm mogelijk maakt. Dit betekent: kleurgradatie, audiodesign en audiomixing.

Onze reis met dit project is bijna ten einde, maar we hebben jouw hulp nodig om de film af te maken op de manier zoals we het voor ogen hebben.

The story
Our project is a short documentary in which we observe the transformation of one urban park and, in particular, one tree. The story of an elm in Amsterdam Noord is intriguing in its own way, but is also an opportunity to reflect on the bigger picture: what trees really mean to us? We want to understand the different ways we could value trees and what are the things about them we might be missing in our daily rush.

The approach
We embarked on this cinematic journey, as we wanted to explore a topic that is important to us. The film is a blend of artistic documentary and the science genre. Therefore we interviewed a few scientists who bring in their point of view when it comes to the relation between people and green life. From local community to municipality, from the dendrochronologist studying the past through the tree rings to the futuristic projection of green life in space, the documentary is a film in which different voices are represented.

The journey of our project
We are currently starting the post-production phase, in which the film begins to take shape. During the editing phase we combine the observational sequences which show the transformation of the park with the scientists’ testimonies. We are using archive material and microscope footage obtained with the help of University of Arizona and are looking forward to build an eclectic yet comprehensive story that can reveal eventually a bit more about ourselves and how we relate to green life.

With the film project we were one of the winners of the ESA New Worlds Film Competition. That is because our film extends beyond just green life on Earth. Most of the financing for the realisation of the film has now been funded via Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst and Cultuurfonds who support our project.

What we still need
We need your help to bring the film to a level that makes it possible to be shown on the big screen. This means: color grading, audio design and audio mixing. Our journey with this project is close to the end, but we need your help to wrap it up in the way that we dream for the film to be like.

Filmmakers:

Marit en Gabriela ontmoetten elkaar op de Documentary Summer School van Riga in 2015.

Marit Vreeswijk werkt onder de titel Filmvrouw als freelance filmmaker in Nederland. Ze richt zich vooral op maatschappelijke korte documentaires in opdracht. Marit heeft een Master in Kunsten, Cultuur en Media en werkt sinds 2015 als onafhankelijk filmmaker nadat ze de vakopleiding‘ Camera Journalist’ afrondde. Door de jaren heen heeft ze deelgenomen aan tal van Masterclasses en cursussen waaronder Lokaal Mondiaal, IDFA en verschillende Summer Schools en heeft ze zich gespecialiseerd in het maken van korte ‘human interest’ documentaires. Marit is nu woonachtig in Ede waar ze naast haar werk als filmmaker een Eco BenB is gestart. Een plek waar mensen komen om zich te verbinden met de natuur.

Gabriela Forfotӑ studeerde film aan Digital Filmmaking aan SAE Amsterdam (2009) en is afgestudeerd aan de Master in Documentary Film aan Babeṣ-Bolyai University Cluj-Napoca (2019). Ze heeft deelgenomen aan verschillende internationale documentaire filmworkshops, zoals IDFAAcademy, Interdoc, DocStories BlackSea, Cineimpact Academy, Riga Summer School, NISI MASA-BIEFF, fARAD, Visegrad Film Forum, EICTV Cuba, Aristoteles Workshop, Film Spring Open. Ze regisseerde en co-regisseerde korte documentaires die identiteit en haar meerdere lagen onderzoeken. Gabriela heeft haar eigen productiebedrijf in Amsterdam - Lorelei Pictures.

SABINE EIJKHOLT / CO-OWNER

Sabine is nu bijna 20 jaar werkzaam in de tv-wereld. In 2014 richt ze haar eigen bedrijf op:Eijkproducties, waarmee ze tv-programma’s produceert en lange opdrachtfilms en documentairesmaakt. Tijdens het produceren van een televisieserie voor Omroep Gelderland werkt ze samen metAnne. Sindsdien is de samenwerking als vanzelf uitgegroeid.

ANNE VAN RIEL / CO-OWNER

Na het afronden van de School voor Journalistiek presenteert Anne haar eerste documentaire tijdens het internationale filmfestival CampusDoc. 'Breekbaar als glas' wint de eerste prijs van de vakjury en wordt uitgezonden op RTV Oost, 2Doc en het internationale filmfestival in Cork. Ook gaat ze aan de slag als camerajournalist bij SkyHigh TV in Hilversum. Ze groeit door naar de afdeling programma ontwikkeling, waar ze televisie formats bedenkt. Deze kennis neemt ze mee als ze na tweejaar besluit om als zelfstandige door te gaan. Na vijf jaren als eigenaar van Avr-producties kruisen haarwegen die van Sabine.

Marit Vreeswijk works under the title Filmvrouw as a freelance filmmaker in the Netherlands. She mainly focuses on commissioned social short documentaries. Marit has a Master's degree in Arts, Culture and Media and has been working as an independent filmmaker since 2015 after completing the professional training 'Camera Journalist'. Over the years she has participated in numerous Masterclasses and courses including Lokaal Mondiaal, IDFA and various Summer Schools and she has specialized in making short 'human interest' documentaries. Marit now lives in Ede where, in addition to her work as a filmmaker, she has started an Eco BenB. A place where people come to connect with nature.

Gabriela Forfotӑ studied film at Digital Filmmaking at SAE Amsterdam (2009) and graduated from the Master in Documentary Film at Babeṣ-Bolyai University Cluj-Napoca (2019). She has directed and co-directed short documentaries that explore identity and its multiple layers. Gabriela has her own production company in Amsterdam - Lorelei Pictures.

SABINE EIJKHOLT / CO-OWNER

Sabine has now been working in the TV world for almost 20 years. In 2014 she founded her own company: Eijkproducties, with which she produces TV programs and makes long commissioned films and documentaries. She works together with Anne while producing a television series for Omroep Gelderland. Since then, the collaboration has grown naturally.

ANNE VAN RIEL / CO-OWNER

After completing the School of Journalism, Anne presented her first documentary during the international film festival CampusDoc. 'Fragile as glass' wins the first prize from the professional jury and is broadcast on RTV Oost, 2Doc and the international film festival in Cork. She will also work as a camera journalist at SkyHigh TV in Hilversum. She progresses to the program development department, where she devises television formats. She takes this knowledge with her when she decides to continue as a self-employed person after two years. After five years as the owner of Avr productions, her paths crossed with those of Sabine.
