Initially 500 books (about 180 pages), an assemblage of seemingly dispersed yet interlinked narratives.Graphic design, editing & printing of the book. A compilation of writings and images created during my wandering & wondering artistic work since 2003. You can order a supplementary chapter in English, Dutch, Romanian or French.
Artistic research, essays, photography, poetry, journals It was in 2003 that I have set off on my first journey to India to taste a flavor of Asian wisdom, partly in the memory of a dear soul who died much too young. A brief, self-thought ritual on the bench of Ganges on a early morning, as the first sun-rays started cracking the crisp darkness, was the real start of the journey. From that point on, it felt as if I became the journey itself, as if it all had a purpose and the only thing I had to do was to allow it to unfold in front of me. Step by step, encounter by encounter, something was building up. Other journeys and art projects have followed: a research on Reality and the Self, on Time as a being, on language, on home and otherness: ripples of the small piece of earth that I sent to float on the river on a leaf, with a flower and a candle on the sides.
Whatever I do, make or write, the aim is to explore, to make sense of something
This something is me, is us, and the ways in which we relate to one another and to the larger realm of life. I am interested in the blur area in which the birthing and vanishing of meaning happens, in how meaning relates to sense as direction and as intention, and how any of these become art. It is an invitation to rest in the interval between one stage and another, in the gap between two gestures, two sounds, two pages, two branches of a tree, two languages, two thoughts, two breaths.

A quote, 'misplaced' postcards and a tiny move forward
According to Jacques Rancière, ”critical art is an art that aims to produce a new perception of the world, and therefore to create a commitment to its transformation. This schema, very simple in appearance, is actually the conjunction of three processes: first, the production of a sensory form of strangeness; second, the development of an awareness of the reason for that strangeness and third, a mobilization of individuals as a result of that awareness”, where the strangeness is caused by revealing the alienation and estranged relationships produced by the language of commodities.
The above interventions are a humble homage to the work of Andrei Cadere and his playful way of working with error.
During the month of April I will be sending personal emails to everyone who has pre-ordered books, to update you on the process and the slow progress.
Heartfelt gratitude for your support and patience,
Iuliana
On the second day of the second month of the fourth year of...
Dear all,
I hope that the first month of this year was a good one for you, that the not-quite-encouraging state of the world affairs is not weighting much on your spirit, and that your immediate surroundings are caring, supportive and inspiring.
As about my process: I am stuck in my own estimation of a planning for an artistic practice that never had time as a constraint, as an ambition, as a goal, rather as a theme, as a topic; something to work with, not against. If I have made the initial planning sound like a promise (did I?), hereby, once again, an adjustment: this book will be completed and it will reach you this year somewhere before or during the summer. When exactly I can’t tell; the challenges and fortunate turns from the making will be revealed either in the book itself, either at the presentation, which will take place at DROOG in Amsterdam and will be announced timely.
Until then, I promise one update each month, and I remain available for questions, socratic conversations and requests for more postcards or fine art prints, if you are interested.
Thank you for bearing with me. With gratitude and best wishes,
I hope by now the postcards have reached the destination! If you wish to receive one more set as a present or if you wish to order one (more) as a means to support my work, please get in touch.
The book and the three optional chapters are ready to be reviewed by me together with a proof-reader - someone I am still looking for! The ideal proof-reader has some knowledge of Romanian language and culture, and/or is of Asian heritage ánd has a critical practice or at least understanding of language based artistic practice.
The support you have offered to my project is one of the most beautiful gifts of this year! I take it heartily into 2024, with gratitude and the trust that no matter how long it takes, the book will come out to tell the stories I want to tell. Journeys like mine don't go as planned. I remember 2006 when after losing hope I was going to make it to Gangotri (3,100 m), due to poor health, someone crossed my path and offered to help. Guess what: not only we reached Gangotri, but a few days later we were climbing to Tapovan (4,463 m) -- thanks to a beautiful young man who saw my dream and decided to offer a helping shoulder.
I wish everyone an inspiring and prosperous new year. May your surroundings be supportive and your companions de route be in tune with your most beautiful insights and aspirations.
Winter is almost here, with December knocking at the door.
I have finally sent the postcards to print. Here below you see a home-made test. Finalizing the book takes longer than I have estimated, mainly due my slow editing process and proof-reading. There will be no book launch in December unfortunately, but I hope to at least give you an indication about how much time I will still need to complete it.
Some work can't be rushed; it is what I have learned these last months. You are most welcome to get in touch if you want to hear more about how it is going. I will get back with news as soon as I am making significant progress.
Warm wishes and once again, my sincere gratitude for the support you have offered to the making of this book.
It's been a while. Time passed by faster than in any of the stories I wrote this far. Ups and downs. Thoughts stuck in the process, eyes starring at the many pages beautifully designed by Cheawon in a book that starts to look like a real book. The optional chapters coming together. Sketching the dust-cover. Like the autumn leaves, the mind feels drawn to earth, to darkness, the need to recompose. It was a scary kind of silence, now that I promised to share more. I stayed with it, took it into my arms.
That taste.
Browsing through old notebooks, files and journals, looking at dozens of pictures again and again, remembering places, people, gestures, smiles, tears, precious and painful encounters. Past voices surfacing and claiming a place in the book. And we've already passed 200 pages. Feeling like years ago, in a maze of thoughts - the clear ones, the vague ones, too many too chose from.
I am learning that making books 'takes more time than expected, because books have a way to slow down the human body and mind. That is why the process is hard as well as very rewarding' - as N. said. We're gathering our forces and setting forth to fine-tuning design and content. Technology makes it somehow more feasible, somehow less fluid, less palpable. We're looking for ways to meet in the middle, allow the missing elements to flow in, and land on the right pages, in the right tones, right types, right colors. But then, what is right?
We will be back in November with more news about practical details: by when can you expect the postcards, the books, the conversations, the fine art prints and the invitation to the launch-presentation-discussion of the book.
Till then, I am once again expressing my sincere gratitude to everyone who is supporting this project.
It's been a while, and it's been worth the searching. With much gratitude for the hard work of Cheawon Shin and the inspired design contribution by Alex Walker, I am glad to share with you some glimpses from the book design process!
During the month of October, the design and the content of the book will be fine-tuned, made ready for final corrections (that will be V0.2). The plan is to send the book to print in November.
We'll keep you posted with more news from the process, most probably towards the end of October.
With many thanks to everyone for your contribution. It is your support that makes this design & publication journey possible.
Warmly / Hartelijke groet / Cu drag / Chaleureusement,
Iuliana
It is mid summer and for some of us the holidays have just begun. When your work and daily life are intermingled, holiday as a concept tends to fade away. However, we all need a break from time to time, if only to gather our forces, to reflect upon how we are doing and were we are heading. Here is how the making of the book is planned and what you can expect:
🔹 design & dummies > August - September
🔹 fine-tuning design & content: ready to print > October
🔹 printing > November
🔹 launch & discussion > December.
Over the coming weeks I will contact everyone who has pre-ordered books, art works and conversations in person, with specific details about the rewards.
Warm greetings and once again my sincere gratitude for making this campaign a success.
As Voordekunst has informed you 2 days ago (in Dutch), thanks to your donation, my project has been successfully financed!

Again, thank you very much for supporting my project and stay tuned.
Much gratitude to everyone! The campaign has now reached 81% which means that the costs for the making of the book and the launch in December are covered! New donation options open on this campaign until July 15th:
🔹 990€ sponsor the artist fee for this project and receive 3 signed books in exchange
🔹 800€ sponsor the art installation (art exhibition) and receive 2 signed books in exchange.
Multumesc frumos tuturor!

See All This Art Magazine in Amsterdam heeft vandaag mijn project in hun nieuwsbrief vermeldt, waardoor plotseling donaties gemaakt werden door mensen die mij niet kennen. Hartelijk dank!
See All This Art Magazine in Amsterdam mentioned my project in their newsletter today, as a result of which donations were made by people who don't know me! A couple of days are left to reach the already mentioned 80% of the budget. Will you help, for example by pre-ordering a(nother) work or a book, or by passing on the link?
Two days left to go!
Harteljke groet / Warm regards,

A short note to let you know you that the campaign has been once again prolonged with a couple of days, in the hope to reach the min 80%. If you want to be an ambassador of my project and help raise the resources still needed, please get in touch! If you wish to subscribe to the newsletter of See All This Art Magazine you can do it here.
We're almost there! More news soon.
Warmly, Iuliana
I am very happy to announce that See All This Art Magazine in Amsterdam has booked a lecture about my work, and by doing so is supporting my project! More news about the planning will follow. The clock is ticking fast these days. Since my artistic research has started with a journey to India, this is a warm invitation to spread the word East as well, help me find the the 2.000 -3.000 € still needed for making this project a success, so that in December you will have a book that will make you thrill with wonder, without having to wander as far and as long as I did.
Thank you one again for your generous gesture. It is your donation that will make this publication see the light.
Update! A new generous donation just came in! 2.000€ still to raise! Thanks to very generous donations these past days, we reached 51 % of the budget . A minimum of 81 % is needed in order for the campaign to succeed, by July 4th.A couple of days left to make it! We are discussing the printing options with Wilco Art Books. A presentation event is planned for December in the beautiful White Space at Droog in Amsterdam - to be confirmed later on.
Unless I reach 80% of 9.900€ (the aimed budget) every single donation will be returned to you, as explained here https://www.voordekunst.nl/paginas/faq - see the 80% paragraph in Dutch.
Spread the word! Support my project by sharing the campaign. Thank you!
I'd like to share with you the best message I received from my contact at VoorDeKunst, on my birthday:
"Goed nieuws! We hebben een aanvraag gedaan bij Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Noord Holland voor je campagne en ze willen je graag een bijdrage geven van € 1.000 !" which translates : "We have submitted an application to Prince Bernhard Cultuurfonds Noord Holland for your campaign and they would like to offer you a contribution of € 1,000!"
A similar gift came from my family, and with these, chances are we'll soon see all the needed resources to realize this book, ideally with an installation based on my archives on the side, to be presented and discussed in November or December this year.
It's been a joy to read all messages and good wishes left behind next to donations, and I am just as grateful for everyone who donated anonymously. Thank you!
Moore good news soon / Kom gauw terug voor meer goed news!
Dear all, once again my sincere gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the budget for making this book - with an installation on the side, for the public presentation. Here below an indication of the budget, what is needed & the ‘nice to have’, as an estimation:
2.000 € for 40 - 50 hours of graphic design & cover design
3.500 € printing & binding the book with supplementary chapters
1.000 € approx. campaign costs: VoorDeKunst, VAT, promotion clip.
1.000 € public presentation & curator / art critic fee for December
500- 1000 € fine-art prints, postcards, delivery costs etc
1.000 € artist fee (that’s for me).
All together, 9.000 € would be nice to raise! I can perhaps do with 8.000 € by allocating 10 - 20% less on design, printing, presentation & artist fee. For donors who wish to support the project with donations above 500 € (lectures, fine-art prints or free-donation) I will provide details on how the budget will be spent, after completion.
While a ‘simple’ book with 180 pages shouldn’t be too complex to design, the complementary chapters bring a modular aspect to the book, which implies more design work, a cover that allows for the book to exist as an ‘object’ with or without the complementary chapters.
Time flies! There are 18 days left and about 7.000 - 8.000 € still to raise. Can we make it, by a miracle?
With this publication I aim to bring together all the relevant pieces I have made, in a way that will connect the dots between what seems to be rather fragmented, dispersed stories and projects. It will be a document for students of art and artistic research, it will support my teaching activities, it will tell the story of a female artist who wasn’t looking for fame and instead choose to take as long as it takes in order to allow the content to find its way and destination to some sort of ‘final’ shape. Nothing is ‘final’, of course, paper does get old, damaged, recycled and no one can tell where and how this book will journey, once printed.
Will it only be about India and what we in the West can learn from there, or the other way around? No. Will it be a comparison between this theory and that theory, one culture and another? No. Will it be (too) academic? No. Will it be easy to read? Not always. Will it please you? I am not sure, but I think it will touch you.
Two presentation moments - the book, an installation based on my archives and a discussion about the approach - are planned for December at Perdu and at Droog in Amsterdam.
Until then, below are some images to chose from - if you wish to order a fine art print. I will share new ones in future updates.
Here's a little note to express my gratitude for the first pre-orders, donations and encouraging words, as well as for the attentive effort of a couple of artists and friends that helped with making the film and starting the campaign.
I will share news about how the campaign progresses here, and how the budget will be spent. The big picture is: 50% printing, 7% Voor de Kunst and the rest will be shared between designers, an editor and a curator.
Your contributions mean a lot to me, and I am thrilled to think of the days when we'll put the book together, design special covers for the supplementary chapters, send the postcards and fine art prints, and prepare upcoming exhibitions.
Soon more! Warmly,
Hartelijke groet!
Iuliana
