Help us with the recording of a specially composed piece for something very new: the Hyperorgan!

Of Ancient Days is a musical creation story, illustrating the birth of the world through sound in a unique composition for hyperorgan (more on that later!) by myself, Dutch-Canadian Composer Trevor Grahl. For this creation I had a unique companion, the composer Johan Sebastian Bach, whose partita Sei Gegrüsset, Jesu Gütig runs through my piece like a silver thread, performed by Dutch-Sardinian organist Francesca Ajossa. We have performed the piece live several times since its premiere in 2018. Read on to find out why we’ve teamed up with COBRA records and decided it’s time to make a recording – the purpose of our crowdfunding campaign!

Of Ancient Days is een muzikaal scheppingsverhaal van de aarde vertaald naar klank in een bijzondere compositie voor hyperorgel (meer hierover volgt later!) geschreven door mijzelf, de Nederlandse/Canadees componist, Trevor Grahl. Mijn partner op deze bijzondere reis is niemand anders dan Johann Sebastian Bach wiens stuk Sei Gegrüsset, Jesu Gütig de rode draad door de compositie heen vormt, prachtig gespeeld door Nederlandse/Sardijnse organist Francesca Ajossa. Sinds de première in 2018 hebben we het stuk een paar keer in binnen-en buitenland gespeeld. We hebben nu besloten om de krachten te bundelen met COBRA Records en een album uit te brengen.

Hyperorgan?!

Amsterdam’s Orgelpark commissioned a very unique new instrument that was completed in 2017: the Utopa organ by Elbertse & Van Vulpen organ builders. This special instrument is not only an authentic baroque organ, offering a sound-world that is perfect for Bach, but also contains a special system inside developed by the Sinua company of Germany. With this system, new ways of controlling the organ’s airflow and many other parameters are possible enabling the baroque organ to sound very differently, producing as John Cage would have said, “glorious and shocking” sounds. And all this is acoustic, without loudspeakers! Yet, the pipework, registers, and intonation remain baroque – a new way of interacting with beautiful, old instruments.

Het Orgelpark in Amsterdam heeft een hele bijzonder orgel dat is gemaakt na jaren van intensief onderzoek; het Utopa Barok orgel, gebouwd door Elbertse & Van Vulpen orgelbouwers. Dit is niet alleen een authentiek barokorgel dat de perfecte klank heeft voor het spelen van de muziek van Bach, maar bevat ook binnenin een nieuw systeem ontworpen door Sinua, een bedrijf in Duitsland. Door dit systeem kan men het orgel heel anders laten klinken door bijvoorbeeld te spelen met de luchttoevoer, het stapelen van klanken, de toevoeging van delay effecten, enz., en dit alles zonder luidsprekers! Toch blijft het ook een authentiek barok orgel, een vereniging van oud en nieuw; twee verschillende klankwerelden!

Childhood dream

As a young composer and organist, I was always searching for sounds on the organ by playing it in strange ways. This was a challenge and the result was not always stable. However, with the new hyperorgan system, I can create sound and musical possibilities that I could only dream of as a child. In this way, perhaps my dream is now a reality! In Of Ancient Days, I wanted to show both sides of the organ – the new and the old, which are both important. Each movement is based on a different day of the Genesis creation narrative where elements stack on top of one another until the climax, the arrival of humans on the sixth day. Bach’s Sei Gegrüsset Jesu Gütig serves as the nights, offering a steadfast moment of pensive meditation amongst the creative action of the days.

Als een jonge organist en componist was ik altijd op zoek naar rare klanken op het orgel en had vaak ‘ruzie’ met mijn orgeldocent. De uitdaging was om nieuwe klanken te vinden door het orgel op vreemde manieren te bespelen, maar het resultaat was meestal niet blijvend. Met het hyperorgel systeem is dat probleem nu voorbij en mijn droom wordt werkelijkheid! In Of Ancient Days wil ik beide kanten van het orgel laten zien, de oude en de nieuwe, beiden zijn belangrijk. Elk deel is gebaseerd op een andere dag van het scheppingsverhaal. Elementen stapelen op elkaar tot op de zesde dag, waar mensen worden geschapen. Bach’s stuk Sei Gegrüsset Jesu Gütig kan gezien worden als de nachten, een moment van stilte en reflectie tussen de drukke dagen heen.

Location

We recorded in Amsterdam’s beautiful Orgelpark on the Utopa organ, the organ for which the piece was conceived. There are only a few hyperorgans in the world and this will be the first time a specially-composed piece for this instrument will be released on CD, hopefully creating more attention for these instruments. As much as we love playing the work live, a recording would truly bring the magical sounds of both worlds of this instrument to a larger public, hopefully creating more interest for the wonderful world of the acoustic pipe organ!

Er zijn maar een paar hyperorgels in de wereld, en gelukkig heeft het Orgelpark in Amsterdam er één hiervan. Dit is de eerste keer dat een werk speciaal geschreven voor hyperorgel op cd verschijnt, hopelijk zal dit meer bekendheid voor dit bijzondere instrument genereren. Hoe graag we dit werk ook live spelen, een opname van het stuk zal de magische klanken van dit instrument toegankelijk maken voor een breder publiek!

Not without you!

The recording won’t see the light of day without your help! Funding generated from this campaign will be exclusively used for the recording, mastering, and production of 500 CDs featuring extensive information about the project and the organ in a 24-page booklet, with special art based on the Nuremberg Chronicles of 1492, a main inspiration for the work. Cobra records’ high quality recording will offer the organ’s unbridled sound in razor sharp definition. In return for your generous support, we offer something as a thank-you, ranging from a CD in pre-order to the chance to be personally present for a special private rehearsal-concert for the release concert, with a (hyper)organ tour in the Orgelpark. The release is scheduled in October 2023 with a live concert of the entire piece.

De opname zal het daglicht niet zien zonder jullie! De totale opbrengst van deze crowdfunding campagne gaat naar alle onkosten; opname, nabewerking, vormgeving, persing van 500 CDs inclusief 24 pagina boekje, publiciteit, etc. De klankkwaliteit van een opname van Cobra Records is ongeëvenaard. In ruil voor jullie genereuze steun kunnen we een ‘dankjewel’ geven, variërend van een CD tot de kans om het stuk live bij te wonen in een besloten repetitie-concert compleet met een hyperorgel rondleiding bij het Orgelpark. De release van het album staat gepland in oktober 2023 feestelijk gevierd met live concert van het gehele stuk!
