Een van de grootste Nederlandse cultuur fondsen het Prins Bernard Cultuur fonds Zuid-Holland heeft een bijdrage van 750,- Euro gegeven!
De teller staat nu op 77% met nog 12 dagen te gaan.

Het boek wordt op 21 april in Barcelona en op 7 juli in Pijnacker gepresenteerd. Details volgen nog maar de datum kun je alvast noteren.

Very good news!
One of the largest Dutch culture funds the Prins Bernard Cultuur Fonds Zuid-Holland has given a contribution of 750,- Euro!
The counter now stands at 77% with 12 days to go.

De crowdfunding is verlengd tot 13 april. Op deze manier hebben we wat meer tijd om nog meer mensen enthousiast te maken voor het boek.
Ondertussen heb ik bij drukkerij Grafia in Pijnacker de eerste proefprints van het binnenwerk gezien.

Het resultaat is nog mooier dan ik dacht, het papier voelt prettig aan en de cotton rag structure geeft diepte en laat de beelden van het papier af spatten.
Als je nog geen boek had besteld twijfel dan niet om dat alsnog te doen!

The result is even more beautiful than I thought, the paper feels nice and the cotton rag structure gives depth and makes the images splash off the paper.

The process

I'd like to explain the process of creating this book.

It started with the idea of a leaflet with QR codes that link to Rita Flowers’ (online) workshops. But I wanted more so I decided to make book and began thinking what it should entail. Of course there should be a lot of visual material in it, because I am a photographer and with Rita Flowers we work extensively with photos and videos of the unique designs in various settings. Was it going to be a catalogue of Rita Flowers’ designs? No, that’d be a different product, this was going to be an Art book in which the designs and its theory behind it would prevail. I also needed texts so I looked for suitable passages in the many blog posts and other publications that Marga had written. I chose those excerpts that communicated with the selected images and that would give the reader an impression of the nature of Rita Flowers’ work.

I made a rough selection of the photographs that we have published over the last ten years. I made small prints and laid them out on the table. There is where the real work begins. I moved the prints around until there was a coherent and fluent set of images that somehow correspond with each other.

For the video stills section, prior to the “moving around small prints”, I first needed to make the stills. So I sat hours and hours watching the videos to extract good images, which is not easy and obvious. Video and photography are distinct mediums. A good shot in a video doesn’t necessarily mean it is a good photograph as well. When I had all the stills I printed them and treated them like photographs.

Once the rough selection of visuals and texts were ready I sent it to Luvia, the designer. She made a layout of the images and decided on the font for the texts etc.

Placing the photos and adjusting them is a craft and I really need a professional like her for that. For example by just making one image a little bit smaller or placing it a little bit out of the centre of the page makes a whole difference and in the ens it gives the book this exquisite look.

After Luvia has done her work she sends it back to me so that I can make sure I agree with her suggestions. In this case we had some discussions about certain changes that she’d made to some photographs. These dialogues are very important and form part of the process to come to the best possible outcome. And then when both of us are happy Luvia prepares the print files to be sent to the printer and there is no way back anymore.

To avoid tunnel vision I also showed the design to several other people. One of them is Barend Fieret, a Dutch photographer and a photography teacher. Barend and I were classmates at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, The Netherlands. We spoke at length about the book as a project and what the draft design was communicating to him. We changed the sequence of the different chapters so that as a whole it conveyed stronger the raise in awareness and the transformation, motifs present throughout the book. He also recommended to add some abstract images what definitely made the book complete.

Het begon met het idee van een folder met QR-codes die linken naar de (online) workshops van Rita Flowers. Maar ik wilde meer dus besloot ik een boek te maken en begon na te denken over de inhoud. Natuurlijk moest er veel beeldmateriaal in staan, want ik ben fotograaf en met Rita Flowers werken we veel met foto's en video's van de unieke ontwerpen in verschillende settings. Werd het een catalogus van Rita Flowers' ontwerpen? Nee, dat zou een ander product zijn, dit moest kunstboek worden waarin de ontwerpen en de theorie erachter de boventoon voeren. Ik had ook teksten nodig, dus zocht ik naar geschikte passages in de vele blogposts en andere publicaties die Marga had geschreven. Ik koos die passages die communiceerden met de geselecteerde beelden en die de lezer een indruk zouden geven van de aard van Rita Flowers' werk.
Ik maakte een ruwe selectie van de foto's die we de afgelopen tien jaar hebben gepubliceerd. Ik maakte kleine afdrukken en legde ze uit op tafel. Daarmee begint het echte werk. Ik schoof met de afdrukken tot er een samenhangende en vloeiende reeks beelden ontstond die op de een of andere manier met elkaar communiceren.
Voor het video stills hoofdstuk moest ik, voorafgaand aan het "verplaatsen van de afdrukjes", eerst de stills maken. Dus zat ik uren en uren naar de video's te kijken om er goede beelden uit te halen, wat niet gemakkelijk en vanzelfsprekend is. Video en fotografie zijn verschillende media. Een goed shot in een video betekent niet noodzakelijk dat het ook een goede foto is. Toen ik alle beelden had, heb ik ze afgedrukt en als foto's behandeld.
Toen de ruwe selectie van beeldmateriaal en teksten klaar was stuurde ik die naar Luvia, de ontwerpster. Zij maakte een lay-out van de beelden en bepaalde het lettertype voor de teksten enz.
Het plaatsen en aanpassen van de foto's is een vak en daar heb ik echt een professional als zij voor nodig. Bijvoorbeeld door een foto een beetje kleiner te maken of een beetje uit het midden van de pagina te plaatsen maakt al een heel verschil en geeft het boek die speciale uitstraling.

Nadat Luvia haar werk heeft gedaan, stuurt ze het terug naar mij, om te kijken of ik het eens ben met haar suggesties. In dit geval hadden we enkele discussies over bepaalde wijzigingen die ze in sommige foto's had aangebracht. Deze dialogen zijn heel belangrijk en maken deel uit van het proces om tot het best mogelijke resultaat te komen. En als we dan beiden tevreden zijn maakt Luvia de printbestanden klaar om naar de drukker te sturen en is er geen weg meer terug.

Om tunnelvisie te voorkomen heb ik het ontwerp ook aan verschillende andere mensen laten zien. Een van hen is Barend Fieret, een Nederlandse fotograaf en docent fotografie. Barend en ik waren klasgenoten aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag. We hebben lang gesproken over het boek als project en hoe het conceptontwerp op hem overkwam. We veranderden de volgorde van de verschillende hoofdstukken, zodat het als geheel de bewustwording en de transformatie, motieven die in het hele boek aanwezig zijn, sterker uitstraalde. Hij adviseerde ook om wat abstracte beelden toe te voegen, wat het boek definitief compleet maakte.
