Een aantal van jullie hebben wellicht gezien dat ik met een nieuwe crowdfundingcampagne begonnen ben hier bij voordekunst. Om een Afro sci-fi museum op te zetten waarbij de superhelden tot leven komen! Afgelopen weekend heb ik een boek signeer sessie gedaan bij Bijlmer bookstore in Amsterdam Zuidoost. Het was een succes en ook de kids hebben enorm genoten.

Last weekend I did a book signing session at Bijlmer bookstore in Amsterdam Southeast. It was a success and the kids really enjoyed it too.

Morgen is het 1 juli, keti koti en hebben we een nieuwe campagne ingeluid. Het Afro sciencefiction museum dat een live experience zal zijn van de avonturen in het boek! Doneren kan eveneens hier via voordekunst en ruil ervoor krijg je een toegang tot het museum! Zie het project hier

Thank you all so much for helping me choose the book cover! As you know, I made a concept cover in the crowdfunding video. However, my illustrator Francis has developed a new cover. And I wanted to know which cover appealed to you the most and I did that on social media and in Google form. This is the result!

Inmiddels is de vormgeving van het boek gedaan. En wordt er nu een proefdruk gedaan. Wanneer alles correct is gaat het boek op de post! Ik stuur jullie een mail voordat dit gebeurt.

I want to introduce you to Ruben Brave he is the investor who bought the package which earned him a role as a superhero in Black Suns!
Hereby the photos of his transformation process into Jagaban The Epifhan. He is the superhero of wisdom in the story who guides the girls Alana and Makeena to find their superpowers.

The signs on his head and suit are Egyptian and Ghanaian (Adinkra) symbols. The symbol on his head is a combination of the Egyptian ankh symbol meaning 'Life' and the Adinkra symbol meaning 'Wisdom'.

Expected release of the book is end of this month. I am now in the last editing phase and will get the book to the designer who makes sure all illustrations are in the right place before it's ready for print.

Team Zwarte Zonnen,

Ik wil je voorstellen aan Ruben Brave, hij is de investeerder die het pakket kocht dat hem een rol als superheld in Zwarte Zonnen opleverde!
Hierbij de foto's van zijn transformatieproces tot Jagaban The Epifhan. Hij is een wijze superheld die de meisjes Alana en Makeena begeleidt om hun superkrachten te vinden.

In samenwerking met mijn illustrator hebben we er ook extra betekenis aan gegeven. De tekens op zijn hoofd en pak zijn Egyptische en Ghanese (Adinkra) symbolen. Het symbool op zijn hoofd is een combinatie van het Egyptische ankh-symbool dat 'leven' betekent en het Adinkra-symbool dat 'wijsheid' betekent.

De verwachte release van het boek is eind deze maand. Ik ben nu in de laatste fase met editing en de vormgeving. Daarna is het boek klaar om gedrukt te worden.

Hi iedereen,

Bij deze een korte snippet van het boek Zwarte Zonnen. Momenteel zit ik in het editing proces! Ik heb een editor die de Engelse tekst verbeterd en daarna zal hetzelfde gebeuren met de Nederlandse tekst.

Hopelijk zal het boek in Oktober naar de drukker gaan als alles volgens planning verloopt. Ik houd jullie op de hoogte van de voortgang!

Er is veel werk verricht, ook heb ik in de tussentijd nieuwe illustraties laten maken onder andere van een van onze grootste donateurs en werken we aan een nieuwe boek cover. In mijn volgende update meer hierover.

Here is a short snippet of the book Black Suns. I am currently in the editing process. I have an editor that improves the English text. and after that the same will happen with the Dutch text.

If everything goes according to plan, the book will go to print in October. I will keep you updated.

A lot of work has been done, in the meantime I also had new illustrations made, including from one of our largest donors, and we are working on a new book cover. More on this in my next update!

Ik wil van dit moment gebruik maken om iedereen te bedanken die "Black Suns/Zwarte Zonnen" heeft gesteund door te doneren!

Ik ben onbeschrijfelijk dankbaar voor alle mooie opmerkingen die jullie allen hebben gemaakt over waarom dit boek zo noodzakelijk is. Het is echt geruststellend om te weten dat zoveel mensen hetzelfde voelen en we hiermee impact zullen hebben op het leven van veel kinderen met zoveel inspiratie, diversiteit en edutainment.

Dit crowdfundingtraject was erg intensief. Fondsenwerving is echt meer dan een fulltime baan. Het kostte heel veel social media posts, e-mails, WhatsApp berichten, foto's, video's, interviews Nederlandse televisie/radio, Ghanese radio/video een podcast en een verlenging van 14 dagen van dit platform om te komen waar we nu zijn. En we zijn er!

Het einde was het meest intensief aangezien ik de laatste 5 dagen nog op 63% zat en in korte tijd op 104% kwam. Veel mensen wisten niet dat als ik niet het volledige bedrag zou halen, iedereen zijn geld terug zou krijgen en ik dit prachtige boek niet in eigen beheer zou kunnen uitgeven. Maar dank God en onze voorouders dat dit een geslaagde campagne is! Ik dank jullie allemaal voor het deel uitmaken van deze geweldige reis.

Dit is echter nog maar het begin. Ik heb het grootste deel van het verhaal geschreven, maar een van onze donateurs (Ruben Brave van Squarespace) nam zelfs het grootste pakket van 3000 euro (3500 dollar) mee waar hij een echt superheldpersonage zal worden in het verhaal van Black Suns / Zwarte Zonnen! Ik ben dus bezig met de laatste afrondingen.

Mijn geschatte tijd om dit boek te publiceren zal in oktober zijn. Nu kan ik eindelijk het verhaal afmaken, een redacteur inhuren om de spelling te controleren, de drukkosten dekken en het naar jullie allemaal opsturen!

I want to take this moment to thank everyone who has helped "Black Suns/Zwarte Zonnen" with donating and showing your support!

I am grateful beyond measure for all the beautiful comments that you have all made for why this book is so necessary. It is really comforting to know that so many people feel the same way and we wil change many Children's life with so much inspiration, diversity and edutainment.

This whole crowdfunding journey was very intensive. Fundraising is truly more than a full-time job. It took many, many, many social media posts, e-mails, WhatsApp messages, photo's, videos, interviews Dutch television/radio, Ghanaian radio/video a podcast and an extension of 14 days from this platform to arrive where we are. And we are here!

The end was the most intensive as the last 5 days I was still at 63% and made it in a short time to 104%. Many people didn't know that if I didn't achieve the full amount, everyone would get a refund and I would not be able to self-publish this beautiful book. But thank God and our ancestors that this is a successful campaign! I thank you all for being a part of this amazing journey.

However, this is just the start. I have written most of the story, however one of our donators (Ruben Brave of Squarespace) even took the biggest package of 3000 euro (3500 dollars) where he will become a true superhero character in the actual story of Black Suns / Zwarte Zonnen!

My estimated time to publish will be October. As now I can finally finish the story, hire an editor to look at the spelling, cover the printing cost and send it to every one of you!

Ik heb een verlenging gekregen van Voordekunst.nl om het volledige bedrag op te kunnen halen voor het in eigen beheer uitgeven van dit prachtige kinderboek "Zwarte Zonnen". Aangezien veel mensen nog op vakantie zijn, zal de verlenging helpen om meer mensen en organisaties te bereiken. Ik kan niet wachten tot iedereen dit boek heeft gelezen. Het proces van het schrijven van een Afro-sci-fi kinderboek is zo leuk! Voor mij begon het met de illustraties. Mijn illustrator is een kunstenaar uit Ghana. Zijn tekenstijl is echt uniek. En we begonnen te brainstormen over het idee van mijn afro sciencefiction kinderboek en hij een aantal voorbeeld tekeningen te maken van een mooi meisje met superkrachten. Vanaf dat moment werd mijn inspiratie aangewakkerd en was het verhaal Zwarte Zonnen geboren! Het was dus andersom dan de meeste kinderboekenschrijvers ervaren als ze een boek schrijven. Vanuit beelden werken past heel erg bij mijn creatieve karakter.

The process of writing an Afro sci-fi children's book is so interesting. For me it started with the illustrations. My illustrator is an artist from Ghana. His style of drawing is so unique. As we started brainstorming on this idea of my children's book via Whatsapp, he started doing some drawings and send them to me. He started with the drawings of this beautiful girl with super powers. From that moment my inspiration was sparked and the story of Black Suns was born! So it was the other way around than most children's book authors experience when they write a book!
