Het fotografie project Bron gaat over de watercrisis in Zuid-Afrika, en bevraagt daarmee hoe wij ons verhouden tot de aarde. Want hoe kan je een watercrisis als deze bevatten, als er nog steeds water uit je kraan blijft stromen? Van het project willen we een boek maken, en daar hebben we jouw steun voor nodig.

Over Bron
Een kwart van de wereldbevolking heeft te maken met extreme waterstress. En dat wordt alleen maar meer. Soms, maakt het moedeloos. Alarmerende berichten over de klimaatcrisis. Ik vraag me af; kunnen we het tij nog keren?

12 April 2018 werd uitgeroepen tot de dag dat er in heel Kaapstad geen water meer zou zijn. Die dag werd wereldwijd door de media tot ‘Day Zero’ gedoopt. Toen ik hierover las besloot ik naar de stad af te reizen en er ruim twee maanden te verblijven.

Ik zag lege zwembaden, sprak hopeloze mensen, recyclede mijn water thuis. Toch merkte ik dat ik het moeilijk te bevatten vond; zelfs al toen ik er was. Het onderwerp bleek veel minder zichtbaar dan ik dacht; en juist dat interesseerde mij ook zo. Het was pas toen ik de lege dammen vlak buiten de stad zag, dat ik me realiseerde dat er iets echt goed mis was.

Het project ‘Bron’ bevraagt hoe wij ons verhouden tot de aarde. Want hoe kan je je een watercrisis als deze bevatten, als er nog steeds water uit je kraan blijft stromen?
Als fotograaf was het voor mij een uitdaging om iets wat zo onzichtbaar is wel te tonen; en voelbaar te maken. In mijn werk doe ik dat vaker; grote en onzichtbare thema’s proberen te grijpen. Want het zijn juist die onzichtbare constructen die ons dagelijks leven zo beïnvloeden.

Over mij
Dat is voor mij dan ook waarom ik werk maak als kunstenaar; ik wil het abstracte duidelijk en dichtbij brengen. Ik kies onderwerpen die onzichtbaar zijn, en geef die, haast letterlijk, een gezicht. Daarom wilde ik van dit project ook graag een boek wilde maken; een manier om dit verhaal zo wijds mogelijk te verspreiden.

Het boek
Ik maak het boek in samenwerking met Lize Swartz; Zuid-Afrikaanse klimaatwetenschapper die een pHd schreef over precies deze watercrisis. Het ontwerp is aan de hand van Lyanne Tonk, en het boek wordt uitgegeven door uitgeverij The Eriskay Connection.

De crowdfund
Het project wordt al gesteund door het Mondriaan Fonds, het Prins Bernard Cultuurfonds en Stichting Stokroos, maar om de gehele drukkosten te dekken hebben we ook jouw hulp nodig. Er zijn meerdere tegenprestaties; waaronder een special edition riso-print, of een special edition print met boek. Door te doneren help jij dit verhaal te verspreiden. About Bron
A quarter of the world's population is dealing with extreme water stress. Sometimes, it makes me feel despondent. Alarming news about the climate crisis. I wonder; can we still turn the tide?

And that will only get worse. April 12, 2018 was declared the day that the whole city of Cape Town would run out of water. Worldwide, the media referred to that day as "Day Zero". When I read about this day I decided to travel to Cape Town. I stayed there for two months.

I saw empty pools, spoke to people who felt hopeless, recycled my water at home. Still, I found it hard to comprehend; even when I was there. The subject turned out to be way less visible than I expected; and that is exactly what interested me. It was only when I saw the empty dams just outside the city that I realized that something was really wrong.

The project Bron questions how we relate to the earth. How can we comprehend a water crisis like this, when there is still water flowing from your tap? As a photographer it was a challenge for me to show something that actually is invisible; and make it tangible. In my work I do this more often; capturing themes that are large of scale and not to be seen. It are precisely these large and invisible constructs that influence our daily life.

About me
For me this is why I make work as an artist; I want to make the abstract clear and close. I choose subjects that are invisible and, almost literally, give them a face. For that reason I wanted to make a book out of this project; it is a way to get this story across as widely as possible.

The book
I am making the book in collaboration with Lize Swartz; a climate scientist from South Africa who wrote a PhD on this water crisis. Lyanne Tonk designed the book, and it is published by The Eriskay Connection.
