Voor dit project heb ik mezelf zes jaar ondergedompeld in de Chinese nieuwswerkelijkheid onder andere tijdens mijn werk als fotograaf voor De Volkskrant. Concept
"China zit tjokvol – in de westerse optiek – met de meest vreemde ongerijmdheden, en tot deze zijn gezien, meegemaakt en, om maar zo te zeggen, verwerkt, is het vrijwel onmogelijk tot enig helder beeld te komen van een land vol schoonheid en belang voor iedere intelligente waarnemer..." J.R. Chitty, Things Seen in China, 1909.
Aan die westerse blik vol 'vreemde ongerijmdheden' van meer dan een eeuw geleden is weinig veranderd. Zeker voor een fotojournalist nu is het lastig om niet aangetrokken te worden door tal van clichématigheden. Van robotbarman, huisdierdroger of buitenaardse whiskey verkopers, het zijn allemaal zeer fotogenieke onderwerpen om de camera op te richten en in mijn fotografie maak ik daar veel gebruik van. Het boek doet een poging om aan de hand van deze absurde façade een inkijkje te geven in de wereld van de Chinezen.
In 75 beelden geeft het boek een humoristische en bevlogen reflectie op het land. Terugkerende thema's in het werk zijn de gretige omarming van technologie, het veranderende politieke klimaat en de maakbaarheid van de fotojournalistiek in de afgelopen 6 jaar. De serie zal vanaf 3 april 2021 (onder voorbehoud) voor het eerst te zien zijn in Museum Hilversum samen met het werk van fotografen Xu Xiaoxiao en Ruben Terlou. Komt dat zien!
Ontwerp en tekst
Samen met ontwerper Sybren Kuiper ben ik de afgelopen maanden aan de slag gegaan om het concept te vertalen naar een fotoboek. De basis van het boek zijn 24 uitklappagina's van twee beelden die tezamen weer een nieuw beeld opleveren. Op deze manier wordt de anekdotische beeldtaal versterkt. Alle foto's krijgen een bijschrift van een paar zinnen die een beknopte context geeft.
Op de omslag van het boek start het essay over Chinese ongerijmdheden speciaal geschreven voor dit boek door China correspondent Marije Vlaskamp. De tekst loopt, net als de voorpagina van een krant, verder op de binnenpagina's van het boek.

Wie ben ik?
Ruben Lundgren (200cm, Hilversum, 1983)
In 2005 ben ik afgestudeerd aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Utrecht en verhuisde daarna naar Beijing waar ik mijn Masters fotografie behaalde aan de Central Academy of Fine Arts. Eerder werkte ik samen met Thijs groot Wassink onder de naam WassinkLundgren aan publicaties zoals Empty Bottles (2007) en Tokyo Tokyo (2010). Een overzicht van ons werk was te zien in FOAM.
Nu werk ik als fotograaf voor onder andere De Volkskrant en als onafhankelijk curator van Chinese fotografie. Met Martin Parr maakte ik The Chinese Photobook (2015) en met The Archive of Modern Conflict het boek MeNu (2018), een smakelijke collectie van Chinese gebruiksfotografie. Voor BredaPhoto cureerde ik samen met He Yining de tentoonstelling China Imagined (2020), een uitgebreid overzicht van hedendaagse Chinese fotografie.
Aankomende zomer presenteert het Nederlands Fotomuseum mijn onderzoek naar het werk van fotografe Ellen Thorbecke en haar foto's van China in de jaren 30 van de vorige eeuw.

Introduction
My name is Ruben Lundgren, I am a Dutch photographer living in Beijing. I am launching this campaign to finance the printing costs for my new photobook 'Real Dreams'. For this project I immersed myself within the Chinese news-reality for six years, partly during my work as a photographer for Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant. There is a nice reward for every donation. Concept
"China is choked – to the Western mind – with the most ludicrous incongruities, and until these have been met, assimilated, and, so to speak, put behind one, it is next to impossible to arrive at any clear picture of a country full of beauty and interest for any intelligent observer ... "
That western look full of ludicrous incongruities of more then a century ago didnt change much. Especially for a photojournalist today it's hard not to be attracted by tons of clichés one is surrounded by. From robotic bartender, full automatic pet dryer, or alien whiskey sellers, they're all very photogenic subjects to aim the camera at and I use them a lot with my photography practise. The book makes an attempt to give an insight into the world of the Chinese on the basis of this absurd facade.
In 75 photographs, the book provides a humorous and passionate reflection on the land. Recurring themes in the work are the eager embrace of technology, the changing political climate and the malleability of photojournalism in the past 6 years. The series will be shown in Museum Hilversum from April 3rd, 2021, together with the work of photographers Xu Xiaoxiao and Ruben Terlou. Come and see!
Design and text
In recent months I have been working with designer Sybren Kuiper to translate this concept into a photobook. The book is based on 24 fold-out pages of two photographs that together produce a new image. In this way, the anecdotal visual language is reinforced. All photos will have captions of a few sentences to provide a brief context.
The cover of the book starts with the essay on Chinese incongruities by China correspondent Marije Vlaskamp written especially for this book. The text continues on the inside pages of the book, just like the front page of a newspaper.

Who am I?
Ruben Lundgren (200cm, Hilversum, 1983)
In 2005 I graduated from the Utrecht School of the Arts and moved to Beijing where I obtained my Masters in photography at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. I previously worked with Thijs groot Wassink under the name WassinkLundgren on publications such as Empty Bottles (2007) and Tokyo Tokyo (2010). An overview of our work was shown in FOAM.
Now I work as a photographer for the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant, among others, and as an independent curator of Chinese photography. With Martin Parr I co-edited The Chinese Photobook (2015) and with The Archive of Modern Conflict the book MeNu (2018), a tasty collection of Chinese user photography. For BredaPhoto, I curated the exhibition China Imagined (2020) together with He Yining, an extensive overview of contemporary Chinese photography.
This summer, the Nederlands Fotomuseum will present my research project into the work of photographer Ellen Thorbecke and her photographs of China in the 1930s.
