Celebrating Women! bestaat uit nooit eerder opgenomen strijktrio’s van vrouwelijke componisten uit de tweede helft van de 19e en eerste helft van de 20e eeuw. We willen deze componistes meer bekendheid geven en de mogelijkheid en kans grijpen hun namen en muziek uit de vergetelheid te halen en te vieren!
We hebben dit album opgenomen in de Westvest90-kerk in Schiedam in april jl. voor het label Cobra Records, bekend om zijn high-end audiofiele kwaliteit.

De componisten
De cd presenteert een prachtig kwartet van vier vrouwelijke componisten, elk met hun eigen muzikale stem; verrassend en boeiend én alle vier met indrukwekkende biografieën, diverse culturele achtergronden, afkomstig uit vier verschillende landen en maar liefst drie verschillende werelddelen.
Het omvangrijkste werk op het album is het indrukwekkende, romantische strijktrio van de Engelse componiste Dame Ethel Smyth, wiens naam en werk stilaan meer bekendheid krijgen. Haar strijktrio, gecomponeerd tijdens haar studie in Leipzig, is misschien wel het enige monumentale strijktrio dat in de 19e eeuw door een vrouw werd gecomponeerd.
Naast dit magnifieke trio presenteert The Hague String Trio een lyrisch strijktrio van de Australische Miriam Hyde, gecomponeerd tijdens haar studie aan het Royal College of Music in Londen; een suite van vijf sprankelende miniaturen van de Nederlandse componiste en violiste Emmy Frensel Wegener en een verstilde maar naar een grootste climax groeiende fuga van de Afro-Amerikaanse Irene Britton Smith, componiste en onderwijzeres uit Chicago.
The Hague String Trio
The Hague String Trio werd in 2006 opgericht door Justyna Briefjes, Julia Dinerstein en Miriam Kirby. Zij ontmoetten elkaar in Den Haag na jaren van studie en werk in vele landen, waaronder Rusland, Mexico, Noorwegen, Engeland, Duitsland en Nederland, en kwamen bij elkaar om hun liefde voor kamermuziek te delen. Sindsdien hebben zij zich tot een hecht ensemble gevormd en treden ze regelmatig op in niet alleen Nederland, maar ook Engeland, Duitsland, Zwitserland en Tsjechië.
Hun cd After the Darkness, bestaande uit werken van Joodse componisten wier levens verwoest zijn in de Tweede Wereldoorlog door vervolging, moord of verbanning, ontving veel media-aandacht en is beloond met prachtige recensies uit binnen- en buitenland.
Justyna en Miriam zijn beiden lid van het Residentie Orkest in Den Haag en Julia is een vooraanstaand altviooldocente aan verschillende conservatoria in Nederland.

Celebrating Women! viert de ontdekking van deze strijktrio’s en we brengen met trots en blijdschap een hommage aan de vier vrouwen, met de hoop dat ze in de toekomst op vele concertpodia te horen zullen zijn!
Om dit project te kunnen bekostigen hebben we uw hulp nodig. Dankzij het Sena Muziekproductiefonds, Gravin van Bylandt Stichting en Von Brucken Fock Fonds hebben we een deel van de kosten kunnen dekken. Voor het resterende bedrag kunnen we uw steun goed gebruiken. Uiteraard bent u ook van harte uitgenodigd voor het cd-presentatieconcert op zaterdag 30 oktober om 14.30 uur in de Nieuwe Kerk in Den Haag!

CD project Celebrating Women!
Celebrating Women! is a collection of world première recordings of string trios by women composers from the second half of the 19th and first half of the 20th century. With this project we pay tribute to these composers, and by doing so, hope to give their names and music more public exposure and celebrate them!
We recorded this album in the Westvest90 church in Schiedam last April for the label Cobra Records, renowned for its high-end audiophile quality.

The composers
The CD presents a wonderful quartet of four women composers, each with their own personal musical voice; refreshing and intriguing and all four with fascinating biographies, diverse cultural backgrounds, coming from four different countries and no less than three different continents.
The main work of the album is the impressive, romantic string trio by the English composer Dame Ethel Smyth, whose name and work is gradually gaining greater recognition. Her string trio, composed during her studies in Leipzig, is perhaps the only large scale string trio composed by a woman in the 19th century.
In addition to this magnificent trio, The Hague String Trio presents a lyrical string trio by the Australian Miriam Hyde composed during her studies at the Royal College of Music in London; a suite of five sparkling miniatures by the Dutch composer and violinist Emmy Frensel Wegener, and a glorious fugue by the African-American composer Irene Britton Smith, a composer and school teacher from Chicago.
The Hague String Trio
The Hague String Trio was founded by Justyna Briefjes, Julia Dinerstein & Miriam Kirby in 2006. They met in The Hague after years of study and work in several countries, including Russia, Mexico, Norway, England, Germany and The Netherlands, and came together to share their love of chamber music. Since then they have formed a strong bond as an ensemble and perform regularly in The Netherlands, and also in England, Germany, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.
Their CD After the Darkness, featuring music by Jewish composers whose lives were destroyed in the Second World War through persecution, murder or exile, received a great deal of media attention and many wonderful reviews both in The Netherlands and abroad.
Justyna & Miriam are both members of the Residentie Orkest The Hague and Julia is a sought after viola pedagogue in many conservatoires in The Netherlands.

Celebrating Women! is a celebration of the discovery of these string trios and a tribute to the four women who we present to you with pride and joy and in the hope that their music will be heard in many concert halls in the future!
