De film in het kort

Waar thuis was is een film over een familie in een huis in the middle of nowhere. Op een dag komt er een steentje tegen het raam, onduidelijk waar vandaan. De familie komt er niet achter hoe dit kan, er is niets of niemand. Tevergeefs zoekt de familie naar verschillende oplossingen. Ondertussen verschijnen er steeds grotere stenen die niet alleen schade aanrichten aan het huis, maar ook aan de hechte familieband. De familieleden beginnen op hun eigen manier met de situatie om te gaan, terwijl de stenen blijven komen. Wanneer de situatie verslechtert komen ze in de knoop met elkaars verwerkingsmethodes. Het probleem verplaatst zich van de stenen buiten, naar de familie onderling. We volgen de dochter van het gezin die vanuit haar perspectief langzaam het gezin uit elkaar ziet vallen.

Motivatie

Mijn naam is Youri Smaal en ik studeer dit jaar af met een film over een onderwerp dat mij lange tijd heeft bezig gehouden.

Samen met mijn familie heb ik vijf jaar moeten leven onder de agressie en intimidatie van mijn oude buurvrouw en haar vrienden. Zonder enige hulp van de woningstichting of de politie probeerden we het beste van de situatie te maken. De agressie van buitenaf leidde tot degeneratie van ons gezin. Hierdoor konden we er onderling ook steeds minder goed over praten en begonnen we de oneerlijkheid van de situatie op elkaar af te reageren.

Toen ik later probeerde te bedenken waar dit alles begonnen was, kon ik mij nog één moment duidelijk herinneren. Er werden elke nacht steentjes tegen ons raam gegooid wanneer de buurvrouw weer een feest had gegeven. Op dat moment leek het nog redelijk onschuldig, maar nu ik er op terug kijk is dit waar het begon. Uit dit moment heb ik uiteindelijk de inspiratie gehaald voor Waar thuis was.

Doel van de film

“Op fysiek terrein zijn ‘vandalisme-achtige’ overlastvormen als bekladding van muren of gebouwen en vooral vernieling van straatmeubilair het sterkst gedaald, op sociaal gebied jongerenoverlast en lastiggevallen worden op straat, en op verkeersterrein parkeerproblemen en agressief verkeersgedrag. Overlast door buurtbewoners is de enige overlastvorm die door meer mensen wordt gesignaleerd en die meer persoonlijke overlast is gaan veroorzaken.” (CBS-Statistische Trends Buurtoverlast, september 2017, P.20)

Ik wil laten zien wat het met een gezin doet als overlast en dreiging in een thuisomgeving langdurig aanhoudt. De omgeving wordt steeds minder veilig en het hebben van een thuis verdwijnt. Het doel is om met deze film meer begrip te creëren voor de mensen die nog in deze situatie zitten of daar nog in gaan komen. Daarnaast is het van belang dat dit soort problemen in de toekomst serieuzer aangepakt gaan worden.

A short description of the film

“Waar thuis was” is about a family, who lives in a house in the middle of nowhere. One day a small stone hits the window. It’s not clear where it comes from. The family doesn’t understand what is happening, there is nothing or nobody. In vain the family looks for different sollutions. In the meanwhile bigger stones are appearing. They not only cause dammage to the house, it also destroys the close family ties. The members of the family start to deal with the situation on their own way. Meanwhile more stones are coming.

When the situation gets worse, the ways of dealing with the situation by the different members of the family don’t match. The problem transfers from the stones outside, to the family relationships.

The story is told through the eyes of the daughter. She observes that the family bond slowly falls apart.

Motivation

My name is Youri Smaal. I want to graduate this year with this film that contains the subject that kept me busy for a long time.

Together with my family, we had to deal with the aggression and intimidation of our neighbour and friends, for five years. Without any support of the housing association and the police, we tried to make the best of it. It created a degeneration of the family. That’s why it was difficult for us to talk about it and we started to pick on each other, because the situation was so unfair.

Later on, I realized that it all started at that moment I remember so clearly. Every night my neighbor was having a party, stones were thrown against our window. At that time it wasn’t really a problem yet, but now as I look back, I realize that it all started here. This moment was the inspiration for making “Waar thuis was”.

The purpose of the film

“CBS-Statistische Trends Buurtoverlast, september 2017, P.20”. It says that there is a decrease in acts of vandalism, harassing people on the street and agressive traffic behaviour. The only thing that has increased is neighbourhood disturbance.

I want to show what happens to a family when their home feeling is threatened for a long time. The environment doesn’t feel safe anymore and the feeling of “having a home” disappears. With this film I hope that people can understand how it is to live in a situation like this and what it will do to people who are still in this situation. It is important that these sort of problems will be taken more seriously in the future.

Beside the costs of traveling and equipment we need more money to make the film more real and attractive to watch. Artwork and set construction play an important part in the film.
