FLESHQUAKE

A video project about freedom of movement, beauty idealizations and critical society which stems from the aspiration to challenge and question Western notions of beauty, normality and decency.

THE PROJECT

Fleshquake consists of a movement research through the inclusion and the development of tailor-made costumes. Starting in 2019, we conducted a research on cosmetic surgery and medical silicone in order to be able to reproduce body implants for breasts and buttocks with biodegradable material as agar-agar. This one, even though might resemble silicone, has fragile properties and a short life cycle. Body enhancements are revealed as garments in order to redefine the "plastic body" and its standardized perfection.

The work aims to replace labels with questions by emphasizing constructions of femininity, sexuality, gender politics and the often objectified dancing body.

* Agar-agar is a jelly-like substance, obtained from red algae.

WHO WE ARE

The two artists, Raquel Sanchez Gálvez and Greta Desirèe Facchinato come from different artistic backgrounds such as installation, video art, dance, sound art and performance. Their collective projects are thought-out as choreographic negotiations and aim to blur the lines between their artistic backgrounds and the audience's assumptions. The project has been developed with Silvia Sandri (costume designer), Valentino Russo (sound composer and video editing assistant), Alberto Omiste (photography director) and Federica dalla Pozza, Alkis Barbas, Saskia Wieser three performers, coming from different dance and performance backgrounds .

• fully sustain the costs of equipment (rental of lights, cameras, filming gear)
• cover the materials costs to realize the costumes (textiles, threads, sewing gear)
• reward every professional involved (performers, costume designer, photography director, composer, art directors, initiators and video editors)

THE LOCATION - DE SCHOOL

Fleshquake is realized during an artist-in-residency at De School Amsterdam between January and March 2020. Its result will be shared in an exhibition throughout different spaces of De School from the end of the residency.

De School represents a unique cultural venue in Amsterdam New West, hosting a range of art and cultural events: from concerts, exhibitions, lectures and performances. The venue provides an open framework for both emerging and established artists to present work and to experiment with new media and formats or display.

NEDERLANDSE SAMENVATTING:

Een videoproject over bewegingsvrijheid, het idealiseren van schoonheid en kritische samenleving die voortkomt uit het streven om westerse noties van schoonheid, normaliteit en fatsoen uit te dagen en in vraag te stellen.
Fleshquake bestaat uit bewegingsonderzoek door inclusie en ontwikkeling van op maat gemaakte kostuums. Vanaf 2019 hebben we een onderzoek uitgevoerd naar cosmetische chirurgie en medische siliconen om lichaamsimplantaten voor borsten en billen te reproduceren met biologisch afbreekbaar materiaal als agar-agar. * Hoewel dit op het eerste gezicht misschien lijkt op siliconen, is het breekbaar en heeft een korte levenscyclus. Lichaamsverbeteringen worden onthuld als kledingstukken om de "plastic body" en zijn gestandaardiseerde perfectie opnieuw te definiëren.

Het werk beoogt labels te vervangen door vragen door de nadruk te leggen op constructies van vrouwelijkheid, seksualiteit, genderpolitiek en het vaak geobjectiveerde dansende lichaam.
