The Music
With my ensemble The Puncke’s Delight I will produce a series of recordings showcasing the Lyra Viol. For our first project we will record the music of William Corkine, some of the best music composed for the instrument, on a newly reconstructed “Lyra Viol”. The repertoire is for 2 singers, lute and myself playing the viol. It will be the first time that this wonderful music has been recorded on a Lyra Viol with sympathetic strings. With this exciting new project there is still plenty of pioneering left to do in Early Music!

The Instrument
What, you might ask yourself, is a Lyra Viol? This interesting question is something that has been intriguing me for many years. In the present day we love standardisations and classifications, they are easy. This is certainly not the case when we delve into the world of instruments in the 17th Century!

The term Lyra Viol refers to a way of playing the bass viol which first dates from the beginning of the 17th Century in England. The instrument is tuned in scordatura (we know of 50 different tunings) and the music is notated in tablature. The term also refers to an instrument differing from a normal bass viol:

`... the Wire Strings were conveyed through a hollow passage made in the neck of the Viol, and so brought to the Tail thereof, and raised a little above the Belly of the Viol, by a Bridge of about 1/2 inch: These were so laid that they were Equivalent to those above, and were Tun'd Unisons to those above, so that by striking of those Strings above with the Bow, a Sound was drawn from those of Wire under neath, which made it very Harmonious.5 This description becomes clearer when you look at it from the pegbox: the strings run through the hollow neck to a bridge about 1/2 in. high. ~Playford Musick's Recreation on the Viol, Lyra-way (London, 1661)

A Pioneering Project
I will use Bram Peter’s Lyra viol reconstructed after Playford's description above. This is the first time in the modern day that a project like this has been undertaken and it can only happen with your support.

The Money
The donations received for this project will cover the recording production costs, recording venue hire, travel costs and a modest honorarium for the musicians involved. We will record this project in February 2020 and release the cd later in the year.

Dublin born Nicholas Milne began his viola da gamba studies in Ireland with Sarah Cunningham. This inspired him to pursue a career performing on the viola da gamba taking him to study at the Royal Conservatory The Hague with Wieland Kuijken and Philipe Pierlot obtaining a Masters degree in performance in 2005. He received a bursary from the Arts Council of Ireland for this study. In 2004 Nicholas was invited by Wieland Kuijken to perform with him in a concert to honour his long and distinguished teaching career at The Royal Conservatory, The Hague.

Nicholas is in frequent demand as both a soloist and chamber musician. He performs and records with many leading European ensembles including Capriccio Stravagante, Collegium Vocale Gent, Concert D’Astree, Arcangelo, Pygmalion, Gli Angeli Geneve, Sit Fast and The Hathor Consort. Nicholas can be heard on over 20 CD recordings and there are many more on the way!

Alongside his busy performing career Nicholas is also increasingly in demand as a teacher on a number of courses throughout Europe.

In 2010 Nicholas was the recipient of The Music Capital award from the Music Network and Arts Council of Ireland. This generous award allows him to play on a very rare original viol by Joachim Tielke from 1707.

Nicholas has a passionate interest in discovering, editing and performing music for the Lyra viol, leading him to found his own ensemble The Puncke’s Delight in 2019. The Puncke’s Delight will make its debut with a tour of The Netherlands for the prestigious chamber music series of the Festival Oude Muziek concert series.

Nicholas now lives in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

De Muziek
Met mijn ensemble The Puncke’s Delight ga ik een aantal opnames maken waarin de Lyra Viol te horen is. Voor ons eerste project gaan we de muziek van William Corkine opnemen, een van de beste muziek ooit gecomponeerd voor dit instrument, op een nieuwe gereconstrueerde ‘Lyra Viol’. De repertoire is voor 2 zangers, één luit en een Lyra viol die ik zal bespelen. Het zal de eerste keer zijn dat deze prachtige muziek zal worden opgenomen op een instrument met resonantiesnaren. Met dit spannende project is er nog wat pionierswerk te doen in de oude muziek.

Het Instrument.
Wat je misschien denkt is: een Lyra Viol? Deze vraag is iets dat mij al jaren interesseert. In de moderne dag houden we erg van normalisering en classificatie, ze zijn gemakkelijk. Dit is zeker niet het geval als we de wereld van instrumenten in de zeventiende eeuw induiken!

De term Lyra Viol verwijst naar een manier van spelen op de bass gamba, die voor het eerst voorkwam aan het begin van de zeventiende eeuw in Engeland. Het instrument is afgestemd in scordatura (we weten van 50 verschillende afstemmingen) en de muziek is genoteerd in tabulatuur. De term verwijst ook naar een instrument verschillend van een normale bass gamba:

Een Baanbrekend Project
Ik ga de Lyra Viol van Bram Peter’s gebruiken die gereconstrueerd is zoals de omschrijving hierboven. Dit is de eerste keer in de moderne dag dat een project zoals deze wordt ondernomen en het kan alleen met jullie hulp!

Het Geld
De donaties voor dit project zal gebruikt worden voor de opname van de productie, de huur voor de plaats waar het wordt opgenomen, de reiskosten en een vergoeding voor de muzikanten die betrokken zijn. We gaan dit project opnemen in Februari 2020 en de CD zal later in het jaar uitkomen.

Nicholas, geboren in Dublin, Ierland, en is daar met zijn viola da gamba studies begonnen met Sarah Cunningham. Dit inspireerde hem om zijn carrière als viola da gamba-speler na te streven. Dit leidde hem naar Den Haag waar hij bij het Koninklijk Conservatorium met Wieland Kuijken en Philipe Pierlot ging studeren. Waar hij in 2005 een Master diploma haalden door middel van een optreden. Hij ontving hiervoor een studiebeurs van de ‘Arts Council of Ireland’. In 2004 was Nicholas uitgenodigd door Wieland Kuijken om op te treden met hem in een concert als eer voor zijn lange en succesvolle onderwijscarrière in het Koninklijke Conservatorium, Den Haag.

Er is veel vraag naar Nicholas als zowel een solo muzikant en kamermuziek speler. Hij speelt concerten en neemt cd’s op met veel Leidende Europese Ensembles waaronder: Capriccio Stravagante, Collegium Vocale Gent, Concert D’Astree, Arcangelo, Gli Angeli Geneve, Pygmalion, Sit Fast en The Hathor Consort. Nicholas is te horen op meer dan 20 CD opnames en er komen er nog veel aan!

Naast alle concerten die Nicholas speelt is er een toenemende vraag naar hem als docent op een aantal cursussen verspreid door Europa.
