We maken een boek! Thomas Kuijpers is met Jeremy Jansen en Fw: Books bezig aan een publicatie die zijn verzameldrang, obsessie met media, politiek en hedendaagse ontwikkelingen probeert te vangen, en langs de tijdlijn van de gebeurtenissen legt die van grote invloed zijn op zijn praktijk.

Het werk van Thomas Kuijpers komt altijd voort uit een (reeks) actuele gebeurtenis(sen), aan de hand waarvan hij onderzoekt op welke manier de vertellingen hierover invloed uitoefenen op ons dagelijks bestaan. Wat is het effect van de dagelijkse berichtgeving die ons netvlies bereikt, als het gaat om terrorisme, vluchtelingen, Europa, extremisme, etc?

Om dit te onderzoeken, verzamelt Thomas veel materiaal van allerlei proporties; kranten, flarden gesprekken die hij op straat opvangt, videomateriaal van Youtube, posters aan de muur bij de bushalte, commentaren op Twitter. Zodra het raakt aan het onderwerp wat onderzocht wordt, wordt het aan de verzameling toegevoegd. Vanuit die verzameling ontstaan er nieuwe verbanden, inzichten in de manier waarop vertellingen rondom bepaalde onderwerpen vormgegeven worden, en ontstaat ook het werk - waarbinnen het bronmateriaal vaak nog zichtbaar is.

Onder de werktitel Hoarder Order willen Thomas Kuijpers en ontwerper Jeremy Jansen de afgelopen 20 jaar bekijken - een periode van 2000-2020. Beginnend met een voorpagina van het Eindhovens Dagblad die het nieuwe millennium inluidt: 'Gelukkig nieuwjaar' zegt, en tevens de geruststellende woorden brengt dat alle computers het nog doen, naar een pagina van hetzelfde dagblad van jaar erop waar het woord 'Wereldschokkend' dik gedrukt op prijkt. De aanslag op de Twin Towers. Voor Thomas als 15/16-jarige jongen zulke indrukwekkende ankers in de tijd, dat hij het destijds al nodig vond om deze kranten te bewaren.

Vanuit hier ontvouwt zich in het boek de noodzaak om op deze tijd te reflecteren, zien we hoe de gebeurtenissen die via het Eindhovens Dagblad destijds zijn leven binnendrongen ontvouwen tot maatschappelijke issues waar we nu nog steeds mee te maken hebben, en volgen we hoe dit steeds verder ontwikkeld is tot de huidige kunstenaarspraktijk, waarin dagelijks dwangmatig meer dan 8 kranten gelezen worden.

Aan de hand van het bronmateriaal wordt er terug gekeken op de bewerkingen en kunstwerken die er uit voort vloeiden, en kijken hoe ook deze wellicht van betekenis veranderden gedurende de jaren verstreken. Een tijdsdocument, waarvan de lezing diverse narratieven kent.

Together with Jeremy Jansen and Fw: Books, Thomas Kuijpers is working on a publication that that seeks to capture his urge to collect, obsession with media, politics and current developments, and places it along the timeline of events that have a major impact on Thomas' practice.

Thomas Kuijpers' work always stems from a (series of) current event(s), on basis of which he investigates how the stories told about these events influence our daily lives. What is the effect on our brain of this daily reporting, when it comes to terrorism, refugees, Europe, extremism, etc?

To investigate this, Thomas collects a lot of material of all kinds; newspapers, fragments of conversations he overhears on the street, video material from Youtube, posters on the wall at the bus stop, comments on Twitter. As soon as it touches upon the subject being investigated, it is added to the collection. From that collection new connections arise, as well as insights into the way in which narratives about specific subjects are shaped; and with this also the work arises, within which the source material is often still visible.

Under the working title Hoarder Order, Thomas Kuijpers and designer Jeremy Jansen want to look at the past 20 years - the period of 2000-2020. Starting with a front page of the local newspaper, Eindhovens Dagblad, that heralds the new millennium: "Happy New Year", it brings the reassuring words that all computers are still working, to a page of the same local newspaper of the following year where the word "Wereldschokkend'' ('Earth-Shattering') is printed with bold characters. The attack on the Twin Towers. For Thomas as a 15/16-year-old boy, such impressive anchors in time that he already felt it was necessary to preserve these newspapers at the time.

From here the need to reflect on this time unfolds in the book, we see how the events that invaded his life through the Eindhovens Dagblad unfold into social issues that we still have to deal with now, and we follow how this always has been further developed into his current artistic practice, in which more than 8 newspapers are compulsively read every day.

Following the source material we'll look back at the edits and artworks that resulted from it, and see how these, too, may have changed meaning over the years. A time document, whose reading has various narratives.
