Marhaba! Een publicatie over een onderzoek naar de kunst scene in Amman, Jordanië!

Tijdens mijn afstudeerjaar maakte ik een super indrukwekkende reis door Israël en Palestina. Deze reis opende mijn ogen, veranderde mijn beeldvorming over deze regio en daarmee ook mijn visie op de kunst. De thema’s van de kunst lopen parallel aan mijn eigen praktijk; autonomie, identiteit en vrijheid.

Deze reis was dé grote inspiratiebron om terug te keren naar het veelbesproken Midden-Oosten om de hedendaagse kunst(cultuur) te gaan onderzoeken en al deze bevindingen te bundelen in een magazine.

En dit keer ga ik naar Amman in Jordanië! YALLAH!

Een voor mij nog onbekend land, een land dat zich stabiel houdt ondanks dat het omringd is door spanningen, oorlogen en terreur. Én een land waarin er een duidelijk interessante kunstscene actief is.

Voornamelijk in de hippe, levendige wijk Jabal ‘al Weibdeh in het oude gedeelte van Amman waar ik op diverse plekken zal gaan verblijven om zo te integreren in het bruisende dagelijks leven van Amman.

Ik ben dus ontzettend benieuwd naar de kunstscene. Wie zijn deze Jordaanse en Palestijnse kunstenaars? Wat beweegt hen om werk te maken en hoeveel invloed heeft de geografische ligging? Welke mediums worden gebruikt? En hoe liberaal is een van de meest liberale landen in het Midden-Oosten nou eigenlijk?

Wat zijn de sociale, culturele, politieke en maatschappelijke contexten en hoeveel ruimte is er voor de autonome zone die ikzelf altijd wil nastreven en waarborgen. Daarnaast ga ik ook opzoek naar wat de verschillen zijn met het Westen en wat de gemene delers zijn met het Oosten.

DOEL

Het doel van dit onderzoek is om al mijn bevindingen te bundelen in een magazine genaamd Marhaba.

Marhaba betekent "hallo" in het Arabisch. De meest simpele begroeting om de dialoog te starten en daarmee de vriendelijke uitnodiging om een brug tussen het Midden-Oosten en het Westen te slaan.

Want om verbinding en veelzijdigheid na te streven is internationalisering, het vergaren van kennis en een wederkerig netwerk noodzakelijk. Marhaba zelf, is de tastbare openingszin van de dialoog.

En daarom heb ik jullie financiële bijdrage nodig! Niet alleen om onderzoek te doen, (lokale) materialen te kopen om nieuw werk te maken, eventuele samenwerkingen te starten én voornamelijk om Marhaba te realiseren. Maar jullie financiële bijdrage is ook een stem om de dialoog aan te gaan, om te streven naar minder afstand en meer verbinding met kunst als (communicatie)middel.

Ik zou het ontzettend gaaf vinden als jullie mij met eenbedrag naar keuze willen helpen, in ruil voor de leuke tegenprestaties die ik voor jullie heb bedacht!

Marhaba! A publication of a research about the art scene in Amman, Jordan!

During my graduation year I travelled across Israel and Palestine and this was an eye-opening experience.

It changed my view about this region and also my vision and values about art. The themes of art are corresponding to the themes within my own artistic practice; autonomy, identity and freedom.

That journey was the big inspiration to come back to the tumultuous Middle East to do research about the contemporary art(scene) and to collect these findings in a magazine.

And this time, I’m going to Amman, Jordan! YALLAH!

To me it’s an unknown country, a safe haven in a region of conflicts, wars and terror. It’s a country with an active, interesting and vibrating art scene.

Mainly in the hipster area Jabal ‘al Weibdeh in the old part of Amman where I’ll be staying for around 3 months in different places as hostels and Airbnb’s. By staying for this period of time, integrating in life I’ll have all the ingredients to get a clear image of what (art)life inAmman is.

So, I’m really curious about the art(scene)! Who are these Jordan and Palestinian artists? What are their intentions to create work and how much are they influenced by the geographic location? What kind of mediums do they use and what about the galleries and museums? And..how liberal is the most liberal country in the Middle East?

What are the social, cultural and political contexts and how much space is left for the autonomous zone which I want to follow myself within my own artistic practice and also in daily life.

Besides that, I want to discover the differences between the West and the common ground with the Middle East.

GOAL

The goal of this research is to collect all of my findings in a magazine called Marhaba.

In Arabic, Marhaba means “Hello”. The simplest greeting to start the dialogue and at the same time the friendly invitation to build bridges between the Middle East and the West.

To aspire connection and versatility we need to go beyond our own boundaries and step into new worlds and share our knowledge, skills, experiences and network.

Marhaba itself, is the tactile opening to start the dialogue.

And that’s why I need your financial contribution! Not only for doing research, to buy local materials for my own artistic practice, to fund possible collaborations and realising Marhaba magazine.

No, a financial contribution is also a yes to and for being part of the dialogue, to strive for less distance and more connection with art as communication(tool).
