Introductie

Poëzie en muziek vormen de basis voor deze liederencyclus.

Ik voel me bevoorrecht dat ik een aantal kunstenaars uit diverse disciplines heb geïnspireerd om hun individuele talenten te gebruiken en dit creatieve proces te voltooien tot het realiseren van Deliberations and Intuitions. De inhoud van de emotionele expressie zal voor iedereen herkenbaar zijn.

Deliberations and Intuitionsis een liederencyclus gecomponeerd in 2012 door Baxter, een Amerikaanse componist die in Nederland woont. De cyclus bestaat uit acht composities voor vrouwelijke stem (Deborah J. Carter), piano (Baxter) en spoken word (Janette Warburton). De teksten van de liederen zijn poëzie en proza speciaal geschreven voor deze cyclus door drie hedendaagse Amerikaanse dichters uit Boston. Als bonus staat de compositie Sophism voor twee piano’s, gecomponeerd door Baxter op de CD. Deze wordt ook tijdens het concert uitgevoerd.

Poëzie en muziek

De poëzie en het proza, geschreven door Sharon Marie Cox, Greg French enMichelle A. Gabow, zijn een persoonlijk en maatschappelijk argument. De cyclus geeft intuïtief en weloverwogen commentaar op het menselijk bestaan. Aan bod komen het begin van het leven en/of de schepping, de ontwikkeling van woorden/betekenissen, zelfkennis en kennis over anderen, psychische euforie/depressie, benodigde voorwaarden voor creativiteit, liefhebben/geliefd worden, maatschappelijke en morele verantwoordelijkheden en de dood. De poëzie wordt soms voor, na of gedurende de uitvoering van de muzikale composities uitgevoerd door de spoken word artist die daarmee het publiek een theatrale interpretatie geeft van hetzelfde materiaal.

Stijl

De muzikale stijl van de composities is een amalgamatie en de essentie van twee muzikale idiomen namelijk modern klassiek en jazz. De piano partij, in combinatie met de poëzie, is ondersteunend, contrasterend, reagerend en leidend. De vocale melodieën en frases, in combinatie met de piano, zijn een muzikale interpretatie van het inherent ritme en de emotionele inhoud van de poëzie. Het geheel vormt een muzikale expressie van de emotionele inhoud van de poëzie en het proza.

Het concert

Na het uitbrengen van de CD wordt Deliberations and Intuitions live uitgevoerd (wereld première) in het najaar van 2013 in Amsterdam.

Introduction

Poetry and music are the concepts for this song cycle.

It is a privilege to have inspired the artists participating in this project to utilize their specialized talents in the creative process for the realization of Deliberations and Intuitions. The content of the material is an emotional expression which can be recognized by all.

Deliberations and Intuitons is a song cycle composed by Baxter an American composer living in The Netherlands. The cycle consists of eight (8) compositions for female voice (Deborah J. Carter), piano (Baxter) and spoken word (Janette Warburton). The text for the compositions is poetry and prose written especially for this project by three contemporary American poets from Boston. As a bonus, the composition Sophism for two (2) pianos also composed by Baxter will be included on the CD and performed during the concert.

Poetry and Music

The poetry and prose, written by Sharon Marie Cox, Greg French and Michelle A. Gabow, are personal as well as social commentaries. The text portrays crucial moments in a life depicting its beginning/creation, development of words/meaning, cognizance of self and others, psychological euphoria/depression, self-enlightenment, loving/being loved, social/moral responsibilities and death.

Musical Style

The musical style of the compositions is an amalgamation and the essence of two idioms – contemporary classical and jazz. The piano accompaniment, in combination with the poetry, is supportive, contradictory, responsive and leading. The vocal melodies and phrases, in combination with the piano, are a musical expression of the inherent rhythm and emotional content of the poetry. The spoken-word artist will recite the poetry at times before, after or during the musical performances thereby delivering a more theatrical interpretation of the same poetic material. The whole forms a musical expression of the emotional content of the poetry and prose.

The Concert

After the CD release Deliberations and Intuitions will be performed live in its world premier performance in Amsterdam during the latter half of 2013.
