The aula has been neglected for too long. With a few crucial improvements the space can be transformed into new splendour. And you can make this happen!

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner Too? is the culmination of the long-term project with which Patricia Kaersenhout honours 38 black women and women of colour from ancient history until now. The elaborately set table at the centre of her installation departs from the famous Dinner Party by Judy Chicago (1974-1979), by challenging that work’s focus on American and European women and awakening ancient forms of hospitality.

What will we do with your donation?

The iconic space of the aula needs a boost. First of all we’ll give the space a deep cleaning. The designer of the exhibition Rosa te Velde will accentuate a number of the original elements designed by Ben Ingwersen in 1969 and will remove many of the later additions to the space. She’ll bring back the original colours on the walls. We’ll welcome our visitors in a reception area with the stories of these 38 heroines of resistance. The elegant windows will be repaired to let in the light, and they will become the interface for the Adinkra symbols from Ghana that Kaersenhout connects to the individual women. The dignity of the renewed space will resonate with the collective monument Kaersenthout has worked for years to complete.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner Too? is the first opportunity to use the iconic aula of Broedplaats Lely as an exhibition space. The building of Ingwersen, including the aula with the curved roof and wooden ceiling, was the showpiece of the utopian garden city of Nieuw-West. Japanese temples and Le Corbusier’s Ronchamp chapel formed the inspiration for Ingwersen.

De Appel art centre, founded in 1975 by Wies Smals and led by Monika Szewczyk since May this year, realises exhibitions, performances, workshops, screenings and talks. It is the home base of a renowned Curatorial Programme and Archive.

With your help Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner Too? will open on October 4 and will continue to December 1 in the best possible setting for the long-neglected histories of 38 remarkable women!

Help De Appel een podium te geven aan de baanbrekende installatie van Patricia Kaersenhout in de aula van Broedplaats Lely.

De aula is lang aan haar lot overgelaten, maar met een paar goede ingrepen kan zij weer schitteren. Jij kunt ons hiermee helpen!

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner Too? is de bekroning van een meerjarig project waarmee Patricia Kaersenhout 38 krachtige zwarte vrouwen en vrouwen van kleur van de oudheid tot nu eert. De uitvoerig gedekte tafelinstallatie vertrekt van de iconische Dinner Party van Judy Chicago (1974-1979), met vooral een focus op Amerikaanse en Europese vrouwen; in plaats daarvan ontwaken oude vormen van gastvrijheid.

Waar gaat het geld naartoe?

De iconische ruimte van de aula is aan een fikse opknapbeurt toe. We maken de ruimte eerst grondig schoon. Ontwerper Rosa te Velde haalt latere toevoegingen weg en versterkt een aantal van de oorspronkelijke architecturale elementen in het ontwerp van Ben Ingwersen uit 1969. De originele kleuren worden weer teruggebracht op een aantal muren en Te Velde voegt een aantal nieuwe elementen toe. We verwelkomen de bezoekers in een receptieruimte waar de geschiedenissen van de heldinnen van verzet in druk te genieten zijn. De elegante ramen worden gerepareerd om het licht weer binnen te laten, en daarop komen Adinkra symbolen uit Ghana, die Kaersenhout aan de individuele vrouwen verbindt. De hernieuwde luister van de aula resoneert met het collectieve monument waar Kaersenhout al jaren aan werkt.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner Too? wijdt de aula van Broedplaats Lely in als een tentoonstellingsruimte. Het gebogen dak en houten plafond van de aula in het schoolgebouw van Ingwersen zijn het pronkstuk van de utopische tuinstad van Nieuw-West, en zijn geïnspireerd door de Ronchamp kapel van Le Corbusier en Japanse tempels.

Kunstcentrum De Appel, in 1975 door Wies Smals opgericht en sinds mei dit jaar met Monika Szewzcyk aan het roer, realiseert tentoonstellingen, performances, filmvertoningen, workshops en lezingen en is de thuisbasis van een wereldvermaarde curatorenopleiding en bijzonder archief.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner Too? opent op 4 oktober en is tot en met 1 december te zien. Met jouw hulp krijgen de lang genegeerde verhalen van de 38 vrouwen het best denkbare podium!
