What you hear in this short video are just a couple of the stories and memories that we collected during the Sphinx Inside Out project.
So many of the people who came to participate in the project shared with us their memories of working here or living here. Today the Sphinx Quarter is completely changing its face, from an industrial district to a healthy and dynamic, culturally significant area of Maastricht.
Whilst the posters on the walls are only temporary, they capture a specific moment in time, and felt the need to preserve this moment and reflect the temporality of the project into something permanent. A book. And in doing so, we honor the memories of those to whom this place has meant so much.
Surely, all the people who visited, lived and worked in Maastricht will have memories about Sphinx and can connect to the portraits and memories of who participated in this project.
The Crowdfunding will allow us to treasure this photographic project in a book. The book will be full of surprises, and we're excited to be working with Studio Denk and Print Tielen to produce it in a sustainable way.
What is the motivation for organizing this activity or project?
The Sphinx Quarter is the former industrial area of Maastricht, which was first opened in 1834, by Petrus Regout, the Netherlands' first industrialist. There is almost no home in the whole of the Netherlands that does not contain sanitary articles made in this factory. It is also the location where thousands of inhabitants of Maastricht, Limburg and Belgium and elsewhere in Europe worked for years on end. After its closure in 2006, the buildings of the industrial complex were squatted for several years, until they were renovated and reopened as an urban cultural district.
The book Sphinx Inside Out is intended to pay homage to the history of this complex and its workers by bringing the identity of the area back into the city through a series of portraits.
The idea behind the project is to document this moment in time, and to make possible the idea that the identity of a city can have many dimensions. To show that individual stories matter. To give a space for those individual stories in the narrative of the city. We feel the urge to realize this project now, because of the substantial changes that are happening within the Sphinx quartier.
Book launch and specifications:
The project invites passers to be surprised and curious about the stories and memories that carry the portraits in them, and the book will reflect the same concept. Full of unexpected content , with (or course) the portraits, an interview with cmunz artists and some other written contributions, we take you behind the scenes to explore the concept of the project and the things we discovered along the way.
It's design by the fantastic Studio Denk and printed by Drukkerij Tielen to make the book in the most good-quality and sustainable way.
It will contain approximately 250 pages, with a first edition or 500-700 copies. The launch of the book, will happen late September / beginning of October at the Boekhandeldomenikanen.
Sphinx Inside Out is a project by The Artist and The Others and cmunzartists, which portraits 181 faces through the lens or renowned artist Christine Munz.
The portraits are of former Sphinx workers, the people who squatted Sphinx when it was empty and they are the people who are currently working or living in the redeveloped Sphinx district. Through this combination the project shows the generational change and the shift in the social structures that develop around this unique area.
The portraits have been hung on the walls that still surround the old Sphinx factory complex. With this project we reflect the identity of the building and its history through its people. We reflect that identity back into the city. They are visible to everyone.
The Artist and the Others:
The Artist and the Others is an initiative based on the importance of arts for our society and the benefit of shared knowledge. The Artist and the Others gives each project a framework and brings together our expertise and connections to create a solution that meets the needs and delivered with the highest quality.
cmunz artists is the collaboration between artists Christine Munz and philosopher Frans Geraedts. Together they are one public artist.
We thank you in advance for supporting this meaningful project and we hope to see you soon at the launch of the book! Let's treasure these memories for the future!
