WHAT WATER 'SEES' AND 'EXPERIENCES' -
MOVING AND STILL IMAGES
TO SHOW THE DIVERSITY AND VALUE OF WATER.

DOEL van mijn crowdfunding campagne:
1 - Het dekken van productie en materiaal kosten van nieuw werk en een installatie voor 'Depth' tentoonstelling in Detroit, USA.
2 - Om een nieuwe start te maken met mijn carrière als fotografisch kunstenaar na ziekte en jaren van lesgeven.

Introductie
Dit project begon als een test om dmv auto-tracking -bv hoe wetenschappers de belevingswereld van wilde dieren vastleggen op film met een aangebonden camera- toe te passen op elementen in de natuur die minder concreet zijn en die wij als gewoon aannemen zoals o.a. water. Ik ben bijzonder geïnteresseerd in de verschillende manieren waarop wetenschappers de natuur proberen te doorgronden en hoe ze dat in beeld brengen. Daar ga ik dan op mijn manier conceptueel en visueel mee aan de slag. Dit project is de eerste stap van een groter project waarbij ik hoop samen te werken met (natuur) wetenschappers om via installaties de verschillende facetten van de natuur als ervaring op te roepen. De intrinsieke waarde van de natuur op zich hierbij belangrijk, maar ook met het oog op milieu en klimaat. Oceanen zijn belangrijk in de beheersing van het klimaat (CO2) en de biodiversiteit van water is essentieel voor het milieu, en dus voor ons.

Project
De installatie zal bestaan uit 5 video-loops van verschillende waterbronnen in Nederland, Ierland en USA. Het oorspronkelijk video materiaal, dat bewegend met de stromen van water gemaakt is, bekijk ik vervolgens beeld voor beeld en kies daaruit stills, om zo de aandacht te vestigen op een bijzonder water 'moment'. Vaak bestaat een gekozen beeld maar uit één frame in de hele video, zodat men die nooit met een foto camera of het blote oog gezien zou hebben en in de snelheid van de video verloren is gegaan. Deze stills worden vervolgens samengebracht in een slide-show die ernaast geprojecteerd wordt.

Science Gallery Detroit (SGD), USA
De test filmpjes en still beelden zijn goedgekeurd als basis om StillWaterWatching in de Science Gallery in Detroit te realiseren als onderdeel van de tentoonstelling 'Depth'. De SGD is onderdeel van een internationaal netwerk van galerieën die verbonden zijn aan universiteiten en die beogen wetenschap en kunst te verbinden. De tentoonstelling zal reizen naar Venetië, Italië en Bangaluru, India.

Financiën
Net toen ik vol enthousiasme begonnen was aan het realiseren van dit project, kreeg ik de diagnose van 'ernstige ziekte'. Gelukkig heb ik een goede prognose en ben ik net klaar met de behandelingen. Echter, omdat ik mijn freelance baan als fotografie docent heb opgegeven en door de ziekte zelf, is mijn werk 'kapitaal' (lees spaargeld) enorm geslonken. Om deze reden kan ik dus jullie financiële hulp goed gebruiken. Het gaat vooral om productie en materiaal kosten en hier is het gevraagde bedrag op gebaseerd. Maar extra's zijn ook welkom met het oog op reis- en verblijfkosten in Detroit.

Introduction
This project started as a test to use auto-tracking - e.g. how scientists videotape the world of wild animals via a strap-on camera - as a means of recording elements of nature which are not as concrete as animals and which we tend to take for granted, such as water. I am very interested in the various ways (natural a.o.) scientists aim to understand nature and how they visualise their findings. Conceptually and visually I use these in my work. This project is the first instalment of a larger project in which I hope to collaborate with scientist to create installations which evoke the experience of the various features in/of nature. The intrinsic value of nature is important to my work, as are environmental concerns. Oceans are imperative regarding climate (CO2) and the biodiversity of water is important to the environment, and thus to us.

Project
The installation will consist of 5 video loops of various sources of water in The Netherlands, Ireland and the USA. The raw videos for these are made moving autonomously with the waters. Consequently I will scrutinise these image by image to choose stills, which deserve attention as a special water 'moment'. Often these stills are just one frame, which a photo camera and our own eyes would never see and which usually get lost in the fast pace of the video. Thereafter I compile these stills in a slide-show, which will be projected next to the video loops.

Science Gallery Detroit (SGD), USA.
The test video's and the still images have been approved to form the basis for realizing my project StillWaterWatching in the Science Gallery in Detroit as part of their exhibition 'Depth'.The SGD is part of an international network of galleries which are affiliated with universities and which aspire to connect science and art. The exhibition will travel to Venice, Italy and Bangaluru, India.

Finances
Just when I had started with full fervor to produce this project, I got the diagnosis of a 'serious illness'. Luckily I have a very good prognosis and I just finished the treatments. However, since I had stopped teaching photography and due to expenses related to the illness , all my 'working capital' (read: savings) has evaporated. This is the reason I could use your financial support. It concerns mainly production costs and materials, which is where the amount asked for is based upon. But extras will be greatly appreciated as well, which will go to expenses for travel and lodging in Detroit.
