[NL] Meidagen is een korte film gebaseerd op de oorlogsbelevenissen van Jan Hendrik Smit. [EN] Meidagen ('Days of May') is a short film based on the war experiences of Jan Hendrik Smit. The story follows a Dutch soldier who experiences the first days of the Second World War on the Zeeland Flanders coast. As the rest of the country is quickly getting invaded and his battalion can only wait helplessly for the enemy to arrive, his faith will be put to a test.
Over mij
[NL] Ik ben Juri Ferri en ik studeer aan de London Film School. Ik kom uit Bergamo, Italië, en heb een diepe band met Nederland vanwege mijn Nederlandse oma. Vier jaar long woonde ik in Middelburg, Zeeland, waar ik mijn bachelor op de University College Roosevelt behaalde.
Sinds 2016 woon ik in Londen en studeer ik aan de London Film School. ‘Meidagen’ is mijn LFS-afstudeerproject. Het verhaal is erg persoonlijk voor mij omdat het is gebaseerd op de oorlogservaringen van mijn overgrootvader. Tijdens de meidagen van 1940 was hij met het 2e Bataljon, 40e Regiment infanterie in Zeeuws Vlaanderen gestationeerd. Hoewel hij overleed voordat ik werd geboren, heb ik de kans gehad om hem te leren kennen vanuit een boek dat hij schreef over zijn belevenissen tijdens deze periode.
Dit is de reden dat ik zijn verhaal graag wil verfilmen als mijn afstudeerfilm. Omdat ik zelf in Zeeland heb gewoond, voel ik me ook diep verbonden met de locatie waarin het verhaal zich afspeelt, en het geeft mij de kans om terug naar Zeeland te komen en iets terug te geven aan mijn geliefde provincie in de vorm van een film op haar grondgebied.
About me
[EN] My name is Juri Ferri and I am a student at the London Film School. While born and raised near Bergamo, Italy, I have a deep connection with the Netherlands due to my Dutch grandmother. I also lived four years in Middelburg, Zeeland, where I pursued my bachelor at the University College Roosevelt.
Since 2016 I live in London and I study at the London Film School. Meidagen ('Days of May') is my graduation film project. The story is very personal to me because it is based on the war experiences of my great-grandfather, who, in May 1940, was stationed in the Zeeland Flanders coast with the 2nd Battalion, 40th Infantry Regiment of the Dutch army. Even though he passed away before I was born, I got the chance to get to know him through a book he wrote about his experiences during this period.
That is the main reason why I decided to adapt his story as my graduation film. Since I lived in Zeeland myself, I also feel a connection with the location in which it takes place: it gives me the chance of returning to Zeeland and to give something back to this province I love so much by making a film there.
Het verhaal
[NL] Het is 10 mei 1940, de soldaten van het 2e bataljon, 40e regiment infanterie hebben hun stellingen aan de Zeeuwse kust bemand. De Wehrmacht is Nederland binnengedrongen en de Luftwaffe bombardeert strategische doelen. Ordonnans Jan Simons brengt, fietsend over de duinpaden, slechts de bevelen van de officieren rond, terwijl de oorlog elders in het land wordt gevoerd. Als de dagen voorbij gaan, praten de soldaten over dingen die ze voor de oorlog nooit zouden bespreken. Over het bestaan, vrije wil en over God. Jan spreekt vrijuit over zijn geloof. Als overtuigd christen gelooft hij dat God overal een plan voor heeft.
De opkomst van de Wehrmacht lijkt niet te stoppen. De meeste officieren vertrekken. Het gerucht gaat dat de Duitsers ook snel bij de kust zullen arriveren. Als Middelburg wordt gebombardeerd en het vuur daarvan in de verte te zien is, vreest Jan voor het eerst voor zijn leven. Hij besluit om zijn post te verlaten en onder te duiken. Maar kan hij daarmee leven?
The Story
[EN] It’s 10th May 1940, and the soldiers of the 2nd battalion of the 40th infantry regiment have started to arm the battle stations. The Wehrmacht is marching on Dutch soil and the Luftwaffe is bombing strategic targets. Yet, they are stationed on the coast of the Zeeland Flanders, far away from where the fighting is taking place. OrdonnansJan Simons, cycling up and down the dunes, enters a new routine as he brings the officers’ orders to the rest of the troops and performs menial tasks while the war is raging elsewhere in the country. As the days pass and the situation develops, soldiers open up in conversations that might not have taken place as easily before. Conversations about purpose in the universe, free will, and God become more common. Jan is very outspoken about his faith: a convinced Christian, he believes that God is in control of everything and has an eternal plan.
Days pass and the tension ramps up. The advance of the Wehrmacht is unstoppable. Most officers leave. Rumour is that the Germans will be arriving soon. As the nearby town of Middelburg is bombed, and the fire is visible from the distance, Jan fears for his life for the first time. He decides to desert his post and go into hiding. But will he be able to live up to his own convictions?
Visuele Stijl
[NL] De wereld van de film is een wereld die heel echt en concreet moet aanvoelen. We willen graag een tijdloos gevoel creëren, verschillend van een moderne film. Om die reden hebben we ervoor gekozen om analoog op 16mm-film te schieten. Dit formaat, met zijn korrel, is ideaal om de wereld van de Tweede Wereldoorlog op een eenvoudige, niet-glamoureuze manier weer te geven. De toegevoegde textuur van celluloid geeft het beeld een organisch en natuurlijk gevoel. Het geeft deze film ook een unieke look in ons steeds digitalere tijdperk.
Samengewat streven we naar een filmbeeld die eruit ziet alsof het in een ander tijdperk gemaakt zou kunnen zijn: het publiek moet het gevoel hebben terug te zijn in 1940. We laten ons inspireren door kleurenfoto's uit die tijd, die een vervaagd en korrelig beeld hebben, maar die tegelijk een veel reëler beeld geven dan de zwart-wit foto's die we gewend zijn te zien. Het filmbeeld zal stevig verankerd zijn in de tijd en plaats waarin het verhaal plaatsvindt. Extra aandacht willen we schenken aan de kleuren en het gevoel van Zeeland (denk aan de lucht, de duinen en de zee) en hoe die zich verhouden en contrasteren met de mechanica van oorlogsvoering (zoals uniformen, wapens en machines).
Visual Style
[EN] The world of the film is a world that needs to feel very real and concrete. We would like to achieve a timeless feel, and not make it look like a modern film. That’s why we have chosen to shoot on 16mm film. This format, with its grain and grit, is ideal to depict the world of WW2 in a plain, unglamorous way, and the added texture of celluloid will give it an organic and naturalistic feel. It will also give this film a unique look in our increasingly digital age.
In general, we are aiming for something that looks it could have been made in a different era, to help the audience feel like they are back in 1940. We are inspired by colour photographs from the time, which have a washed out and gritty look yet feel a lot more real than the black and white pictures we are used to see. The look of the film will be firmly grounded in the time and place in which the story takes place. Particular attention will be given to the organic colours and feel of Zeeland (the sky, the dunes, the sea) and how they blend and contrast with mechanics of warfare (uniforms, weapons, machinery).
Stand van Zaken
[NL] Het scenario is af en klaar om pre-productie in te gaan. Om het script tot leven brengen, ben ik in samenwerking gegaan met een jonge Nederlandse productiehuis, Blanc Film.
Ons doel is om eind april 2019 te gaan draaien. We hebben een talentvolle team verzamelt die de film kan maken. Sommige leden van de crew zijn studenten van de London Film School, terwijl anderen, waaronder lokale medewerkers uit Zeeland, uit Nederland afkomstig zijn.
We hebben al steun gekregen van verschillende partners en investeerders, onder anderen de London Film School zelf die aan een deel van het budget zal bijdragen. Het Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds in Zeeland heeft ook een bedrag aan ons project ter beschikking gesteld.
Toch blijft filmmaken een erg kostbare klus en we hebben jullie hulp nodig om de laatste financiering bij elkaar te krijgen die we nodig hebben om de project te starten.
State of Affairs
[EN] The script is ready to go into pre-production, and in order to make it come to life I am collaborating with a young Dutch production company, Blanc Film.
Our goal is to shoot in the end of April 2019. We have assembled a talented team to make this film. Some crew members of the crew are students at the London Film School, while others, including some local filmmakers from Zeeland, are based in the Netherlands.
We already received the support of different partners and investors, including the London Film School, which will contribute to the budget. The Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Zeeland has also awarded us with a grant to cover part of the costs.
Nevertheless, filmmaking remains an expensive endevour, and we need your help to get the last funding we need to start the project.
Wat doen we met jullie donaties?
[NL] Het project kent vele uitdagingen: niet in het minst het zo nauwkeuring mogelijk recreëren van Zeeland in 1940. Om de filmlocaties aan te kleden hebben wij historische decor en rewkisieten nodig, die vaak erg duur zijn. Daarbovenop komen nog de kosten van het filmen op 16-mm-film en verwerken van het filmmateriaal.
De crew wordt niet betaald om deze film te maken: we doen dit als vrijwilligers, vanuit het enthousiasme en om meer ervaring op te doen! We zullen het geld gebruiken om historisch correcte rekwisieten en uniformen te huren, net zoals camera- en lichtapparatuur te huren.
We hebben er vertrouwen in dat we met jullie hulp het doel kunnen bereiken om deze film te realiseren!
What are we doing with your donations?
[EN] The project presents many challenges, not least because we want to recreate 1940 in the Zeeland as accurately as possible, and this means we will need to dress the locations with historically accurate props that are expensive to find. Furthermore, shooting on 16mm film presents us with extra costs for buying and processing the film stock.
No crew member is getting paid to make this film: we are doing this as volunteers, out of the enthusiasm to make this film and to gain more experience! We will use the money to hire historically accurate props and costumes and to rent camera and lighting equipment.
We are confident that with your help we can reach the goal to make this film come to reality!
