Do You Really Think We're Going To Sink?

A photo book about the sinking island state of Kiribati.

Kiribati - an island state in the middle of the Pacific - is sinking. Scientist say that if the sea keeps rising, by 2050 Kiribati might be among the first countries to disappear from the world map.

My name is Sanne Zurné, I'm Dutch photographer, and by supporting my campaign you help me to realize a photo book about this beautiful country, where I spent a month to capture the people of Kiribati and their fight against the rising sea.

How is it to live on the front line of climate change?

Last January I spent a month on Tarawa, the main island of Kiribati. I came to Kiribati expecting to find a place planning for its own destruction, but instead I found a people that live like nothing is happening to them.

Life on Kiribati is still as easy and carefree as ever. The I-Kiribati play volleyball, make music, laze and laugh. Problems are for another day. They realize the sea is coming their way, but they can't imagine that their house won't be there. A nation disappearing off the map is something that’s never happened before and, so far, is something people seem unable to imagine.

But the island is facing problems and one wonders how long Kiribati will be livable. Houses flood on a regular basis, soil has become barren, the drinking water salty.

One day I confronted a young woman with the possible destiny of her country. She looked at me for some time, then asked me: "Sanne, do you really think we're going to sink?" My heart broke.

I experienced many adventures on the island. I helped to build a dike out of palm leaves to protect people from rising sea levels; I experienced a King Tide; and I got a very bad tattoo with a scary machine. But most of the days I walked around with my camera; capturing daily life on Kiribati.

These photos, alongside the stories of my adventures, will be collected together in a photo book.

I can't stop climate change. I also can't save Kiribati. But I am determined to help tell the story. Because even though many of the I-Kiribati have convinced themselves that they are not going to sink, things are not looking good and they might have to leave their land in the future. That's why it is time that more awareness is raised about this small piece of land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

The book 'Do You Really Think We're Going To Sink?' will be published in an edition of 500 in September this year. By supporting my campaign (for example by pre-ordering a book on this page) you help me to cover the production costs of this photo book. This includes the design, printing costs and distribution.

The book (24 cm x 33 cm) will be designed by Suze Swarte. She has designed - among other things - the book 'Toneelschuur 50' and the photo book 'I have life' from photographer Sandra Minten. Suze's work can be seen here: www.suzeswarte.nl.

Do You Really Think We're Going To Sink?

Een fotoboek over het zinkende eilandenrijk Kiribati.

Kiribati - een land in de Stille Zuidzee - is aan het zinken. Blijft de zeespiegel stijgen, dan zal Kiribati rond 2050 als een van de eerste landen fysiek van de wereldkaart verdwijnen.

Ik ben Sanne Zurné, fotograaf, en door mijn campagne te steunen help je mij met het realiseren van een fotoboek over dit prachtige landje, waar ik afgelopen januari was om het leven vast te leggen.

Ik heb al veel mensen bereikt met mijn werk: er zijn veel publicaties geweest, onder andere in Oneworld, Het Parool, VICE, Knack, en de Gelderlander. Nu is het tijd om dit werk in een boek te bundelen. Zo bereiken we nog meer mensen, en kan iedereen kennis maken met dit smalle strookje land aan de andere kant van onze aardbol.

Hoe is het om te leven aan de frontline van klimaatverandering?

Afgelopen januari spendeerde ik een maand op Tarawa, het grootste eiland van Kiribati. Ik dacht dat ik naar een land ging met een volk in paniek en in mineur, zichzelf voorbereidend op het naderende einde. Maar zo was het niet.

Op Kiribati gaan de mensen nog steeds vrolijk en zorgeloos door het leven. Ze volleyballen, maken muziek, luieren en lachen. Zorgen zijn voor morgen! Ze zijn zich bewust dat de zee er aan komt, maar dat ze gaan zinken? Dat kunnen ze zich gewoon niet voorstellen. En dat terwijl het eiland al zo ver gezonken is dat het bijna onleefbaar is. Huizen overstromen dagelijks en de grond is onvruchtbaar door verzilting, het drinkwater is zout.

Op een dag confronteerde ik een jonge vrouw met het lot van haar eiland. Ze keek me lang aan en vroeg me toen: "Sanne, do you really think we're going to sink?" Mijn hart brak.

Op het eiland beleefde ik het ene na het andere avontuur! Ik bouwde een dijkje van palmbladeren, belande midden in een overstroming en liet een tattoo zetten met een hele enge machine: hij mislukte hopeloos. Maar meestal liep ik rond met mijn camera om het dagelijkse leven op Kiribati vast te leggen!

Deze foto's en avonturen ga ik nu samenbrengen in een mooi fotoboek.

Ik kan klimaatverandering niet stoppen. En ik kan Kiribati niet redden. Maar ik kan wel het verhaal van dit eiland vertellen. Want ook al hebben de I-Kiribati besloten dat ze niet gaan zinken, dat gaan ze wél! Daarom is het tijd dat wij kennis gaan maken dit smalle strookje land aan de andere kant van onze aardbol, dat straks wordt opgeslokt door de oceaan.

Over het boek

Het boek 'Do You Really Think We're Going To Sink?' zal in een oplage van 500 verschijnen in september van dit jaar. Het boek zal een verzameling zijn van mijn fotografie en verhalen over het eiland en zijn bewoners. Het wordt uitgegeven in eigen beheer en zal bestaan uit 120 pagina's. Door mijn campagne te steunen (bijvoorbeeld door een boek te bestellen) kan ik de productiekosten van het fotoboek bekostigen. Hier vallen de druk kosten, het ontwerp en de distributie kosten onder.

De vormgeving (formaat boek: 24 cm x 33 cm) wordt gedaan door Suze Swarte. Zij ontwierp onder andere het boek 'Toneelschuur 50' en het fotoboek 'I have life' van Sandra Minten. Meer van Suzes werk is te zien op www.suzeswarte.nl.
