What is the project about?
It is a publication project called The Artist’s Novel: The Novel as a Medium in the Visual Arts: the first one ever written to critically and creatively discuss the artist’s novel. This publication aspires to become a reference work, featuring valuable resources, such as the only existing bibliography of artists’ novels, which today counts with 506 titles. Why do artists write novels? What does the artist’s novel do to the visual arts? How should it be experienced? My publication finds its momentum in the current international art scene, where the debate about the hybridisation of visual arts and literature is becoming increasingly important.
Why do I need your support?
The funds raised during this campaign will be aimed to cover the printing costs of the publication. The partial support of the Dutch Art Institute and the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw already help to pay the proofreading and graphic design, but the printing expenses are still to be covered. If the campaign is successful, I will initiate the publishing process so as to arrive in time for the special event I am organising on 1 December in a salient art venue (more details below).
What is an artist’s novel?
In recent years, there has been a proliferation of visual artists who create novels as part of their art projects. They do so in order to address artistic issues by means of novelistic devices, favouring a sort of art predicated on process and subjectivity, introducing notions such as fiction, narrative, and imagination. In this sense, it is possible to speak of a new medium in the visual arts; yet, very little is known about it. Since 2011, I have been working on a research project about the artist’s novel, called The Book Lovers, in collaboration with curator Joanna Zielińska. The publication I am presenting now is the culmination of my artistic trajectory. More information about the artist’s novel and The Book Lovers here.
Description
The idea for the publication is a two-volume book (one volume for an essay, another one for a novel, both are distributed together, bound by a jacket). It is structured in two complementary parts: Part I, the essay A New Medium, is a theoretical approach to key case studies (from Liam Gillick to Goldin+Senneby) that critically examines the different ways in which contemporary artists employ the artist’s novel.
Part II is a novel called The Fantasy of the Novel. It is a narrative account of the process of creation of an artist’s novel called Tamam Shud (by Alex Cecchetti, published by Sternberg Press) that The Book Lovers commissioned in 2016–18. The Fantasy of the Novel appropriates the conventions of a mystery novel, so that the narrator is in the position of a detective who tries to understand the conditions under which an artist decides to write, and how such a thing is possible within an artistic setting. In other words: it is a novel about the process of creation of an artist’s novel.
An experimental writing project
In The Fantasy of the Novel, the actual events during the production of Tamam Shud become fictionalised, and those who took part in it (artist, curators, editors, audience) become characters with their own voices and their own conflicting desires. By accompanying the creative process, the text entices the reader’s narrative empathy and emotional investment to comprehend not only how certain events defined the contents of the Tamam Shud project, but also, what it is like to create an artist’s novel. In this way, it blurs the traditional distinctions between style and content, theory and fiction, art practice and research.
The event
In December, I am organising an event in the Dutch Art Institute that will blend performance with theoretical discussion. This will be the book launch, in partnership with a salient art institution (to be confirmed), and with relevant guest speakers. Donors to this campaign are welcome to join as VIP members of the audience. Donors over €40 will also have the chance to receive their reward in person.
A final word
I highly appreciate your contribution. By helping me to cover the printing costs, I will be able to publish my research. I have invested the last four years in writing this work, to lay the theoretical foundation upon which to understand the artist’s novel (which is something that was never done before) and to do so in a creative manner. Your support for this project is important for many artists who have no reference for the kind of practice they are engaged with. That's the reason why I believe it is going to be widely read and referred to. As a token of appreciation, all donors will be acknowledged in the publication’s colophon.

Deel II is een roman genaamd The Fantasy of the Novel.
