ENCOUNTER#6 is een reizende tentoonstelling van geborduurde littekens en hun indringende verhalen. Doneer een litteken en help de expositie groeien en uitvliegen! Om in totaal 100 littekens te verzamelen en na te laten borduren, én een mobiel tentoonstellingsmeubel te maken, hebben we €15.000 nodig.

Kunstenaar en kostuumontwerper Joost van Wijmen verzamelt littekens en de intieme verhalen die erachter zitten. De littekens laat hij vervolgens naborduren op zijde.

Joost van Wijmen:
"Er is inmiddels een kleine verzameling littekens; van kinderen, pubers, volwassenen en ouderen. Ze onthullen kleine en grote persoonlijke verhalen die tegelijkertijd universele thema's blootleggen en bespreekbaar maken, zoals als intimiteit,privacy, kwetsbaarheid, nabijheid, ontmoeten, deelnemen en gezien worden."

Levende collectie
Deze borduurwerken vormen een levende collectie, die ik binnen het project ENCOUNTER#6 wil laten groeien naar 100 stuks. Voor deze kunstwerken ontwerp ik een mobiel expositiemeubel dat op reis gaat naar bibliotheken, ziekenhuizen en musea. Zoals naar het Elisabeth Twee StedenZiekenhuis in Tilburg, naar Bibliotheek Den Bosch en naar het TextielMuseum in Tilburg. Daarna trekt de expositie verder, in Nederland als ook in de rest van de wereld. De opening van de tentoonstelling is in maart 2019.

Via dit bijzondere project laat ik mensen op een andere manier naar ons (veranderende) lichaam kijken. In ziekenhuizen wordt ENCOUNTER#6 bijvoorbeeld ingezet binnen projecten om de ‘healing environment’ te verbeteren.

Doneer je litteken!
Via deze crowdfundingsactie zoek ik nieuwe littekens én financiële ondersteuning.
Uw financiële bijdrage wordt gebruikt voor het ontwikkelen van het tentoonstellingsmeubel en het borduren van de littekens. Doneren kan al vanaf €15. Bij €500 of meer wordt uw litteken onderdeel van de collectie en gaat mee op reis. Littekens die gedoneerd zijn, worden na afloop van de crowdfundingsactie tijdens een ENCOUNTER-dag ‘opgehaald’ in Utrecht, Rotterdam en Tilburg. Na afloop van de campagne ontvangt u hierover meer informatie.

Bij €1500 of meer haal ik uw litteken persoonlijk op, om die toe te voegen aan de collectie. U ontvangt zelf ook ingelijst exemplaar, als een uniek, met de hand op zijde geborduurd zelfportret thuis!

Over de maker
Joost van Wijmen is zelfstandig kostuumontwerper, onderzoeker bij het lectoraat Performatieve Maakprocessen en vakdocent aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht.

“In mijn werk als kostuumontwerper meet ik lichamen op of pas ik kleding aan. Daarbij raak ik anderen aan. Dit intieme moment vormde het uitgangspunt van mijn praktijkgerichte onderzoeksproject ENCOUNTER. Hierin staat de aanraking niet meer ten dienste van een toegepast ontwerpproces, maar is het het beginpunt van een analyse naar de relatie tussen mensen aan de hand van een fysieke ervaring.”

ENCOUNTER#6 – scars and their stories

ENCOUNTER#6 is a traveling exhibition of embroidered scars and their remarkable stories. Donate a scar and help the exhibition grow! In order to collect a total of 100 scars and have them embroidered, and to make a mobile exhibition station, we need € 15.000,-.

Visual artist and costume designer Joost van Wijmen collects scars and the intimate stories behind them. Subsequently he has the scars embroidered on silk.

Joost van Wijmen:
"We have started a growing collection of scars, from children, adolescents, adults and elderly people, revealing small and big personal stories and at the same time revealing and questioning universal themes such as intimacy, privacy, vulnerability, proximity, meeting, participation and being seen."

Living collection
These embroideries form a living collection, which I want to expand up to 100 pieces within the ENCOUNTER#6-project. For these works of art, I am designing a mobile exhibition station. This will travel along libraries, hospitals and museums, like the Elisabeth TweeSteden Hospital in Tilburg, the Library Den Bosch and the TextielMuseum in Tilburg. After this journey the exhibition will continue both in the Netherlands as well as to the rest of the world. The opening of the exhibition will be in March 2019.

In this project I have people look differently at our (changing) body. In hospitals, for example, ENCOUNTER#6 is used within the context of a 'healing environment'.

Donate your scar!
With this crowdfunding campaign I am searching for new scars and financial support.
Your financial contribution will be used both to develop the exhibition station and to embroider more scars. The donation starts from € 15. If you donate € 500 or more, your scar will be included in the collection and travel along the exhibition venues. The donated scars will be ‘collected’ in Utrecht, Rotterdam and Tilburg in the Netherlands after the crowdfunding campaign has finished during an ENCOUNTER-day. More information will be given after the campaign.

At € 1500 or more, I will personally collect your scar, within the Benelux borders, to be added to the collection. In addition you will receive your scar framed and hand-embroidered on silk as a unique self-portrait.

About the maker
Joost van Wijmen is an independent costume designer, researcher at the research group Performatieve Making Processes and teacher at the Utrecht University of the Arts.

"In my work as a costume designer, I measure bodies or fit clothes. In doing so, I touch others. This intimate moment was the starting point of my ongoing performative research project ENCOUNTER. It analyses the physical relationship between two people by means of staged encounters, on the basis of sensory experiences, resulting in tangible objects."
