MOIRA - Ode to a Life of Failure

Iedereen droomt wel eens van succes in meer of mindere mate, uitblinken in wat we doen. Deze intrige voor de menselijke natuur combineerde Floris Van der Veken met een eigen droom, een professionele, interdisciplinaire kunstvoorstelling op een podium brengen. Als kunst-student kwam hij binnen zijn opleiding vaak in contact met burn-outs en depressies in zijn directe omgeving. Vooral jonge mensen voelen de prestatiedruk van de maatschappij en het gebrek aan plaats voor'trial and error' . MOIRA vertelt ons dit verhaal, het verhaal over ieder van ons die ooit geconfronteerd werd met falen en de angst om niet goed genoeg te zijn. Dit verhaal, een van faalangst en de drang naar spreekwoordelijke onsterfelijkheid, wordt onder de schijnwerpers geplaatst op een podium. Twee dansers, zeven muzikanten en een actrice werken al maandenlang samen om een artistieke interpretatie te bekomen van dit universele verhaal.
MOIRA is een muziek- en danstheater in drie aktes van ongeveer 80 minuten. De première staat gepland op 10 mei in het CcBerchem te Antwerpen en vanuit verschillende plaatsen uit Europa - onder andere Italië en Spanje - toonde men zich reeds geïnteresseerd voor het concept. MOIRA bestaat uit 80 minuten aan nieuwe muziek, geschreven voor deze voorstelling en onlosmakelijk verbonden aan de choreografie, speciaal gecreëerd om dit verhaal te brengen.

Wie is wie?

Deze voorstelling werd uitgedacht door Floris Van der Veken en Marlies Hollevoet, een kunstenaarskoppel uit Antwerpen. Daar ontstond het idee om de krachten te bundelen met verschillende kunstenaars, gevestigd in deze stad, om eenzelfde verhaal samen te brengen. De Canadese componist Adam Vincent Clarke, neemt de muziek voor zijn rekening. Adam is vooral bekend voor zijn werk met het Ballet van Vlaanderen. Daarnaast schreef hij al voor het Four Aces Guitar Quartet en het Silakbo Ensemble. In november 2018 organiseerde hij ook mee de Noorderlichtparade in Antwerpen.
De choreografie wordt verzorgd door Laura Walravens en Margot Masquelier. Laura, werkzaam in het Ballet van Vlaanderen, danste reeds mee in producties van Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui en Akram Khan. Haar klassieke techniek gaat hand in hand met Margots meer hedendaagse stijl. Zij genoot haar opleiding onder andere aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen. Het grootste deel van de muziek wordt verzorgd door het Rashomon Saxophone Quartet. In 2015 opgericht in Antwerpen verzorgden ze al verschillende voorstellingen en speelden ze mee in Zwanemans van hetPaleis. Het project wordt gecoacht door Wouter Van Looy, artistiek leider bij Muziektheater Transparant.

Waarom hebben wij uw hulp nodig?

Naast het artistieke gedeelte van een creatie, kunnen we niet om de praktische zaken heen. Om deze voorstelling werkelijk van een hoog niveau te laten zijn is de vormgeving essentieel. Om de productie mogelijk te maken,moeten we hier concreet de aandacht op vestigen. Dit brengt een hoop kosten met zich mee. Uw geld zal dan ook gebruikt worden voor de praktische kant van de creatie, in de eerste plaats decor en kostuums. Een kleiner deel zal besteed worden aan de zaalhuur en technische ondersteuning.
Onze eeuwige dank zal de uwe zijn als u dit project steunt, als u besluit een groter deel te worden van deze productie, een deel van ons verhaal.We willen u verzekeren dat het niet onze bedoeling geld te verdienen aan dit project. Ons doel is om een universeel verhaal te brengen, de wereld tonen, via kunst, hoe de jongere generaties hun weg vinden in de huidige samenleving.

MOIRA - Ode to a Life of Failure

All of us dream of succes, being good in the things we do. Floris Van der Veken was intrigued by this similarity between all human beings, and combined it with a dream of his, bringing a professional interdisciplinair production on stage. Being an art student, he was confronted rather often with burn-outs and depression related to this subject. Especially young people feel the pressure of society to deliver and the lack of space for trial and error. MOIRA is this story about all of us who experienced failure and the anxiety of not being good enough. This story, one of anxiety and eternal life, will be brought in the spotlights, on stage. Two dancers, seven musicians and an actress are working together for months to create an artistic interpretation of this universal tale.
MOIRA is a music- and dance theatre in three acts from 80 minutes. The premiere is planned the 10th of May in the CcBerchem in Antwerp and several places in Europe - for example in Italy and Spain - showed their interest for this concept. MOIRA consists of 80 minutes new music, written for this performance and inseparable connected to the choreography, created to tell this story.

Meet the crew

This performance was created by Floris Van der Veken and Marlies Hollevoet, a couple of artists living in Antwerp, Belgium. There emerged the idea to combine forces with different artists, all living in this same city, to tell one and the same story through different artforms. The Canadian composer Adam Vincent Clarke will write the music. Adam is an Antwerp-based composer known form his work with the Ballet of Flanders. He got commissions from the Four Aces Guitar Quartet and the Silakbo Ensemble. In November 2019 he organised the Noorderlichtparade in Antwerp.
Laura Walravens and Margot Masquelier will take care of the choregraphy. Laura, active in the Ballet of Flanders, already danced in productions of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Akram Khan. Her classical technique works hand in hand, but contrasts beautifully, with Margot's more contemporary. She received her education, amongst others, at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp. Most of the music will be performed by the Rashomon Saxophone Quartet. Founded in 2015, they participated in various performances, as well as the theatre Zwanemans by hetPaleis. The project is coached by Wouter Van Looy, artistic director of Muziektheater Transparant.

Why do we need you?

Next to the artisitic part of creating something, practical matters are not to be left untouched. An important element to make this a high-level production is the shaping. To make this production possible, we need to have particular attention for this matter, but it brings a lot of expenses. Your money will be used, in the first place, for practical expenses such as the making of the costumes and decor. In smaller amounts it will be used to pay for hall rentals and light- and sound technicians.
