Wij zijn violiste Merel Vercammen en pianiste Dina Ivanova, en we willen ontzettend graag binnenkort ons eerste album opnemen. Op de cd komen onze lievelingssonate voor viool en piano, de sonate van César Franck, en prachtige composities van twee vrouwelijke componisten; Poldowski (dochter van de bekende vioolcomponist Henryk Wieniawski) en Mathilde Wantenaar.

Poldowski schreef haar sonate in een tijd dat vrouwen nog geen kiesrecht hadden. Ze had, zeker voor die tijd, een bijzonder leven: ze reisde als concertpianiste door heel Europa, ontwierp haute-couture voor het Britse koninklijk huis en schreef mooie laatromantische composities. De vijfentwintigjarige Nederlandse componiste Mathilde Wantenaar schreef haar fantasierijke Sprookjes voor viool en piano ongeveer honderd jaar later. Vrouwelijke componisten zijn ook in deze tijd helaas nog steeds in de minderheid, en met dit album willen we extra aandacht vestigen op deze twee fantastische vrouwelijke componisten.

“Al sinds mijn vijftiende is de sonate van César Franck mijn lievelingsstuk voor viool en piano. Ik heb aan deze sonate jarenlang met al mijn leraren geschaafd en deze daarna op vele concerten gespeeld, waardoor mijn interpretatie van dit stuk eigenlijk mijn gehele artistieke ontwikkeling omvat. Toen ik de sonate voor het eerst met Dina speelde, een ‘klavierleeuwin’ pur sang, voelde het zo natuurlijk. Het was vanaf het begin duidelijk dat we dit op cd moesten brengen.” - Merel

Helpt u mee om ons droomproject waar te maken?

Het album zal uitkomen bij Gutman Records, een onafhankelijk label dat in korte tijd al vele lovende kritieken in de pers mocht ontvangen. De opname is in handen van Guido Tichelman, recent winnaar van een Grammy Award voor zijn opnames van het album van Ludwig en Barbara Hannigan, en we willen begin januari 2019 in de Philipszaal in Eindhoven opnemen.

We zijn heel dankbaar dat Stichting Jovaro en het Kersjesfonds het project willen ondersteunen met een bijdrage, maar het project kan niet gerealiseerd worden zonder een geslaagde crowdfunding. We hopen dan ook ontzettend dat u ons wilt ondersteunen!

Wat staat er precies op de cd?

César Franck (1822-1890) - Sonate in A groot | Poldowski (1879-1932) - Sonate in d klein | Mathilde Wantenaar (1993) - Sprookjes 1, 2, 3

De vrouwelijke componiste Poldowski (1879-1932), pseudoniem van Régine Wienaiwski, werd geboren in Brussel en trad als concertpianiste op in heel Europa en de VS. Haar muziek is heel beeldend en fantasierijk. Hetzelfde geldt voor de muzikale sprookjes van de jonge Nederlandse componiste Mathilde Wantenaar (1993).

We combineren deze werken met de monumentale sonate voor viool en piano van de in Luik geboren componist César Franck (1822-1890). Deze sonate was een huwelijksgeschenk aan de vioolvirtuoos Eugène Ysaÿe, die het werk op zijn eigen bruiloft meteen mocht uitvoeren, en luistert als een ode aan de liefde.

Over ons

Merel Vercammen “speelt betoverend viool”, aldus Biëlla Luttmer in de Volkskrant. In 2014 studeerde Merel cum laude af aan het Royal College of Music in Londen. Ze was prijswinnares van o.a. de London Grand Prize Virtuoso Competition, het Nationaal Concours van de Stichting Jong Muziektalent Nederland en het Prinses Christina Concours. Merel trad op over de hele wereld en speelde zowel in de meest prestigieuze concertzalen van de wereld, zoals het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, de Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg en Wigmore Hall in Londen, als in een paleis in Roemenië en op een papier-maché bootje op de Waddenzee.

Afgelopen jaar bracht Merel een vioolconcert van Mathilde Wantenaar in première dat speciaal voor haar werd geschreven. Ook stond ze als improvisator en gastsolist veertig keer in de voorstelling van Herman van Veen in Carré in Amsterdam. Daarnaast ontwikkelde ze een interactieve voorstelling over muziek en het brein (Het nieuwe Mozart effect), waarin het publiek live ontdekt of je slimmer kunt worden door het luisteren naar muziek. Met deze voorstelling trok ze naast concertpodia en festivals ook langs Nederlandse universiteiten, om zo een jonger publiek te bereiken. Ook was zij veelvuldig op nationale en internationale radio en tv te horen.

Merel bespeelt een viool uit 1820 van de Italiaanse bouwer A. Postacchini, haar ter beschikking gesteld door het Nationaal Muziekinstrumenten Fonds.

Dina Ivanova (1994, Rjazan, Rusland) won prijzen op diverse internationale concoursen, waaronder een tweede prijs op het Liszt Concours in Weimar (2015), de eerste prijs op het Tel Hai Concours in Israël (2016) en de Artist Recognition Award op het International Keyboard Festival in New York (2017). In 2017 won Dina Ivanova de publieksprijs en de derde juryprijs tijdens het Internationaal Franz Liszt Pianoconcours in Utrecht. Als onderdeel van het Career Development Programme dat door het Liszt Concours wordt aangeboden, wacht Ivanova een uitgebreide concerttournee als solist, met concerten bij het Korean Symphony Orchestra in het Seoul Arts Centre. Daarnaast wachten haar recitals in landen over de hele wereld, waaronder Brazilië, Ecuador, de Verenigde Staten, Rusland, Zuid-Afrika, Letland, Noorwegen, Duitsland en Nederland.

Dina heeft concerten gegeven over de hele wereld. Hoogtepunten waren concerten met de Thüringer Philharmonie, het Israel Symphony Orchestra en het Gothenburg kwartet, concerten in het Liszt Huis in Weimar en Schloss Schillingsfürst.

Dina studeerde aan de Central Music School in Moskou en het Tsjaikovsky Conservatorium in Moskou bij A. Mndojants. Vanaf september 2018 zet zij haar studie voort in Weimar, Duitsland.

We are violinist Merel Vercammen and pianist Dina Ivanova, and we are planning to record our debut album soon. The album will include our absolute favourite Sonata for violin and piano: the Franck Sonata. We will combine this Sonata with compositions by two female composers: Poldwoski (daughter of the famous composer Henryk Wieniawski) and Mathilde Wantenaar.

Poldowski wrote her Sonata for violin and piano at a time when women weren’t allowed to vote. She had a very interesting life, especially for a woman of her time; she travelled across Europe as a concert pianist, designed haute-couture for the British Royal Family and wrote beautiful late-romantic compositions. The Sprookjes (fairytales) by twenty-five-year-old composer Mathilde Wantenaar were written about a century later. Female composers are still a minority in classical music, and with this album we would like to draw some extra attention to these two wonderful female composers.

“I’ve played the Franck Sonata ever since I was fifteen years old and it has always been my favourite. I’ve worked on this Sonata with all my teachers and have performed it on many occasions afterwards, which has led to an interpretation which encompasses my whole artistic development. When I first played this work with Dina (in Dutch I would call her a ‘klavierleeuwin’, Keyboard Lioness!) it felt very natural. From the very beginning it was clear for us that we wanted to record this Sonata on cd together.” – Merel

Will you help us to realise our dream project?

The album will be released on Gutman Records, an independent label, and the recording will be led by Guido Tichelman, who recently won a Grammy Award. The recordings will take place in January at the Philipszaal Eindhoven.

About us

Violinist Merel Vercammen graduated with highest distinction from the Royal College of Music in London in 2014 and was a prize winner of the London Grand Prize Virtuoso Competition and the Dutch National Competition for Young Music Talent. She has performed all over the world (from Indonesia to Brazil) and played as a soloist or chamber musician in the most prestigious concert halls, such as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and Wigmore Hall in London. She has performed major concertos such as Brahms and Beethoven with several orchestras. Last year Merel premiered a violin concerto that was written for her by Mathilde Wantenaar. She also developed an interactive lecture-recital about music and the brain which she performed both in concert halls and at Dutch universities, aiming to reach younger audiences for classical music. Merel performs live on radio and tv regularly.

Merel plays on a beautiful violin made by Italian luthier A. Postacchini in 1820, kindly given on loan by the Dutch Musical Instruments Foundation.

Pianist Dina Ivanova won Third Prize at the 11th Liszt International Competition in Utrecht in 2017. She was also awarded the Capgemini Audience Award. She received both prizes in the main hall of TivoliVredenburg after a performance with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Markus Stenz.

Dina has won numerous awards including 2nd Prize at the Liszt Competition in Weimar (2015), 1st Prize at the Tel Hai Competition in Israel (2016) and the Artist Recognition award at the 2017 International Keyboard Festival in New York, USA.

Born in 1994 in Ryazan Russia, Dina studied at Central Music School in Moscow and is currently studying at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and in Weimar. Dina has given concerts across Europe, in Cuba and in the United States. Highlights include concerts with the Thüringer Philharmonie, the Israel Symphony Orchestra and the Gothenburg Quartet, as well as performances at the Liszt House in Weimar and Schloss Schillingsfürst. Future engagements include appearances as soloist with the Korean Symphony Orchestra in the Seoul Arts Centre, as well as recitals in around the world including Brazil, Ecuador, the United States, South Africa, Lithuania, Norway, Germany and the Netherlands.
