het boek I AM WALDVIERTEL.
World Press Photo (1e prijs long term projects - 2018)
World Report Award (finalist - 2018)
Zilveren Camera (3e prijs documentair internationaal - 2017)

My name is Carla Kogelman and I am a documentary photographer from the Netherlands. After working in the theatre industry for almost 25 years, I changed my horizon and studied at the Foto Academie Amsterdam, where I graduated end 2011.
In 2012, I was commissioned by Szene Bunte Wähne, a youth theater festival in Austria, to make a documentary about the rural Waldviertel region. It was the start of the multi awarded and highly acclaimed long term project ICH BIN WALDVIERTEL. The region is situated between Vienna and Czech Republic. I grew up in a rural area myself in Holland. I went back there in 2011 but could not find my youth, my memories, my childhood. However I did find them in Austria. In 2012 I met Sonja, the mother of Hannah and Alena, in front of her farm at the local pond and she invited me over to come over to her house. Soon she also offered me a bed and grandma’s daily hot meal and so I could be even closer to my subjects. Ever since that time I spend every summer a couple of weeks at the farm and follow the daily summer lives of the children in the village. The project is still ongoing. This year I went back twice, once for a special wedding, the second time for a 3 weeks summer stay.
After seven years it is time to create the book I AM WALDVIERTEL, which will be published in november. I need your financial support for the print of this book.

The Amersfoort photographer Carla Kogelman enjoys national and international recognition. There are regular series of her to see in the Saturday magazine of the Volkskrant. She has won the silver camera six times and, for which she is most proud, twice the World Press Photo. "In 2014 I won this prestigious award in the category 'Observed Portraits' and this year in the category' Long-Term Projects' ', Carla says proudly.by Adriënne NijssenAmersfoort - For seven years Carla has been photographing the two sisters Alena and Hannah from the Austrian Merkenbrechts, a small village located between Vienna and the Czech Republic. "In addition to these two girls, who are now 15 and 12 years old, I also photograph a few other children in their development in the village," says Carla. "Merkenbrechts is in the Waldviertel and I have called the series 'Ich bin Waldviertel'."For Carla, the time has come to make the series a photo book. "Unfortunately that is not cheap and I am not talking about all the hours I put in. All people around me are obviously paid, such as the publisher, the designer, the printer, an editor and a translator." The latter is necessary because the book is published in English, "Carla explains, the publisher also distributes in England and America, and with an English-language book, the sale is obviously much easier." The German title I used for the project is then also changed to 'I am Waldviertel'. "It will be a 350-page book and 300 photographs will be put together, which together form a documentary image. "We mention everyone that appears in the book with date of birth, and there are pedigrees of the main characters and a map of Merkenbrechts."Normally Carla goes to Merkenbrechts once or twice a year, this year she even went three times. "At the end of August, on Instagram, I saw Hannah's story that there had been a big fire, and a few days later I went back and took the last photos."With a crowdfunding campaign, Carla tries to get the necessary money for this book. Both Carla and Alena and Hannah will be proud when the book comes. Do you want to help Carla to get the required amount together? Go to www.voordekunst.nl/ontdek?q=carla+kogelman and make a donation. Every amount is welcome, for a donation from 55 euros you get a signed copy. Incidentally, Carla will also sign the book at Veenendaal bookshop on November 18 a.s.
