ONDERWEG is an exhibition connecting visual art and tango. It is also an interdisciplinary art festival with many activities. We transform the feeling of nostalgia into beauty at the Amsterdam harbor. A a mix of well known and mid-career artists visual artists and dancers participate; all the artwork connects to the theme, some works are made for the festival, or created on-the-spot. Onderweg (On the way)

Onderweg is an interdisciplinary art festival, from 21 - 30 September, that will combine visual arts, dance, music, tango, and artists talks. There will be an artist in residence, making artwork inspired on the location during the event. All of this and more, will take place in a historical location at the Amsterdam harbor : the Bagagehal of Loods 6.

We ask your support to help us realize some important aspects of this event!

Nostalgia of the traveler
The connecting line that runs through this project is the feeling of nostalgia of the traveler. This is a feeling that is present in all the artworks and an essential component in the Tango music, dance and poetry.

Nostalgia is not only about sadness but also about recognizing that on the road we sometimes find some jewels that are worth to keep inside of us and remember them even when they are gone or far away. In this way, the feeling of sadness transforms into art.

Historical location at the harbor
The location where the project takes place, Bagagehal of Loods 6, right at the harbor, is a strong historical symbol for these feelings. This is where the immigrants left on their journey. So all the activities will take place in an environment that is already telling the story of travellers who are on the road.

Onderweg (NL)

Onderweg is een interdisciplinaire kunstmanifestatie in Loods 6, de Bagagehal in Amsterdam. De thematiek behelst verbinden van heden en verleden in de thematiek van mensen die onderweg zijn als basis van ontmoetingen met andere culturen en biedt meerdere invalshoeken. Er wordt een verbinding gemaakt tussen de plek, bagagedepot van aankomst en vertrekhal van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Scheepvaart Maatschappij. Van hieruit vertrokken en kwamen schepen aan met immigranten, mensen onderweg.

De basis wordt gevormd door een beeldende kunst expositie in deze prachtige hal.

De muziek en dans van de Argentijnse Tango; bespiegelingen over cultuur in de vorm van artist talks en lezingen; de video-verhalen en beelden vormen een programmering die zich verbindt met de expositie. De deelnemende kunstenaars gaan op verschillende manieren in op de hedendaagse thematiek van mensen die Onderweg zijn, tussen aankomst en vertrek.

De historie van de plek sluit aan bij de thematiek: KNSM, aankomst- en vertrekhal van internationale emigranten en immigranten.

Er zijn deels interdisciplinaire werken: een choreograaf maakt een werk dat een relatie legt met de expositie. Een aantal kunstenaars maakt site-gerelateerd werk. In een residency atelier speelt een van de kunstenaars in op de Genius Loci (ziel van de plek).

De programmering bevat ook twee tango weekenden, en er zijn introductie lessen. Zo worden verschillende publieksgroepen verbonden en aangetrokken.

Alle activiteiten verhouden zich tot de thematiek vh project .( heimwee ; nostalgie; onderweg zijn)

wat voorafging...
De organisator van het project, Marijke de Vries, werd hiertoe uitgenodigd door de directeur van Loods 6, waarvan de Bagagehal deel uitmaakt, op basis van een kunstenaars boekje dat zij maakte na een residency drie jaar geleden. Dit project, 'Falling Angel', werd ook gecrowdfund op Voordekunst.

Hierdoor is 'Onderweg' een natuurlijk vervolg op "Falling Angel'. In 'Onderweg' brengt Marijke haar grote passies, beeldende kunst en Argentijnse Tango, samen.
