--- UPDATE ---

"By showing the still existing scars of the first world war Peter hopes to create awareness of the importance of a united Europe. He hopes to realise this book by crowdfunding and I hope he succeeds because he proofed with his books 'Touch' and '(Un)expected' that he can make meaningful books."

As a documentary maker, I’ve been working for more than two years on a photo project about the remnants that are still present today from the First World War. The project is called ‘Shaky Ground’ and takes place along the frontline around Ypres (The Ypres Salient). These images are the starting point for my new photo book.
Motivation
My motivation to start this photo project stems from a personal memory from my youth: one of my cousins from Ypres died on May 31, 1979, when he tried to dismantle a projectile from the First World War that, until that day, had not exploded.
Contents and form of the project
This new project is part of a bigger research domain I’ve explored over the past years, which is directed at making socially sensitive subjects more accessible. Recently I have focused on the social consequences of blindness, suicide and the life of a family living on the edge of society.
My photo documentary consists of a big series of images of the remnants that were found around The Ypres Salient. Even though the remnants above the ground have practically disappeared, I have used the power of suggestion to show the monstrosity of the First World War. The form of the project is a book and one or more expositions. Aside from the photos, the book will include an essay, in particular on the European ideal and the importance of the lasting peace we’ve known from more than fifty years and wish to keep.
Target groups
Besides people who are interested in documentaries about social problems, my project may be of interest to: teachers, policy makers and people who find it important to keep these memories alive, current and future students, from the European Union and worldwide, policy makers from Flanders, Europe, as well as people interested in art and photography.
Why supporting this project?
The communication about the topic that my book exhibits can definitely help bring the sense of urgency for a united Europe to the attention of even more people. By looking back on history, it will accentuate the positive image of a united Europe and the lasting peace we’ve known for more than fifty years and wish to keep.
Why do I need your support?
I'm working on this project on behalf of my personal invested time.
The amount which I need to produce the book is budgeted at €17.000, €7.500 are from personal resources and alternative funds. €9.500 is the target amount for crowdfunding.
The costs include: printing & binding, design, translations, voordekunst fee 7% and other costs.
What do you get in return for your support?
As a donator, you will not only receive a thank you but also something meaningful and unique for different amounts.
What is my plan?
If the crowdfunding campaign succeeds, then I will start fine-tuning the book immediately, after which it will be printed and bound this summer. In September 2018 it will be presented during UNSEEN in Amsterdam, but your personally signed and numbered copy will be sent to you before UNSEEN, giving you the scoop!
