Om Dimitri Sjostakovitsj’ Uit Joodse Volkspoëzie in het Jiddisch uit te kunnen voeren, hebben we je hulp nodig!

De droom …

Al lang droomde ik ervan om Dimitri Sjostakovitsj’ liederen Uit Joodse Volkspoëzie in het Jiddisch te zingen. Het is prachtige muziek en het is prachtige kamermuziek – twee redenen om het te willen zingen. Maar het waren de teksten die me niet meer loslieten: de simpele en toch zo expressieve verhalen van armoede, ellende, dood en ook, soms, geluk. Sommige kende ik al als Jiddische volksliedjes en ik vond hun metamorfose in Sjostakovitsj’ bewerkingen fascinerend.

Sjostakovitsj heeft de 11 oorspronkelijk Jiddische teksten in de Russische vertaling op muziek gezet maar Joachim Braun - een musicoloog die veel onderzoek deed naar Joodse elementen in Sjostakovitsj’ muziek - beweerde dat het de intentie van de componist was geweest dat de liederen ook in het Jiddisch gezongen konden worden. Ik moest het proberen!

… het duwtje in de rug …

Jarenlang bleef ik het uitstellen tot ik afgelopen jaar tijdens Elizaveta Agrafenina’s Zwarte Avonden project opeens met drie fantastische collega’s op het podium stond. Elizaveta, tenor Tyrone Landau en Jaap Kooi waren binnenkort net zo enthousiast als ik over het idee om de liederen in het Jiddisch uit te voeren.

… het project …

Het programma stond snel vast: Naast de 11 liederen van Shostakovich staan de volkslied-versies die Tyrone van pianobegeleiding heeft voorzien tevens Joodse/ Jiddische liederen van Ullmann, Milhaud en Ravel.

Na maanden van plannen, rechercheren, bewerken, uitproberen, studeren en repeteren zijn we met dit project heel gelukkig en op de uitkomst erg trots. En daarom willen we het met zo veel mogelijk mensen delen. Natuurlijk vooral met iedereen die wil komen luisteren naar een van de drie concerten op 20, 21 en 22 april in Weesp en Amsterdam. Maar ook graag met onze families die helaas niet naar Nederland kunnen komen voor deze concerten, met onze vrienden uit alle landen en met iedereen die geïnteresseerd is om Sjostakovitsj’ Joodse liederen met de oorspronkelijke Jiddische teksten te horen.

We hebben daarom prachtige locaties gekozen en hopen dat je komt luisteren!
- Op 20 april zingen we in de Van Houtenkerk in Weesp,
- op 21 april in Salon de IJzerstaven in Amsterdam en
- op 22 april in Splendor Amsterdam.
Voor diegene die er niet bij kunnen zijn, maken we een video-opname.

… en het geld …

Dit project is wel erg kostbaar en daarom willen we je om een donatie vragen. Voor de kosten voor de huur van de concertlocaties en de opname komen we nog 1200 euro tekort. We hebben mooie zalen gekozen om van de uitvoeringen voor ons en voor jou, ons publiek, een echt feest te kunnen maken - en ook om voor de opname optimale omstandigheden te hebben. Support us to perform Shostakovich' From Jewish Folk Poetry in Yiddish!

We need your help to realize three performances of Shostakovich' "Jewish songs" in Yiddish.

The dream …

I have been dreaming for years of performing Dimitri Shostakovich’ songs From Jewish Folk Poetry in Yiddish. It is wonderful music and it is wonderful chamber music – two reasons to want to perform it. But it was the texts that kept my imagination busy for a long time: These simple yet expressive tales of poverty, misery, death and also, sometimes, happiness. Some of them I knew as Yiddish folk songs and found fascinating to see the metamorphosis they went through in Shostakovich’ settings.

He set the 11 originally Yiddish texts in the Russian translation. However, Joachim Braun, a musicologist who had done substantial research on Jewish elements in Shostakovich’ music, claimed that the songs were meant to be singable in Yiddish as well. I had to try!

… the boost …

For years I kept putting it off, until last year, during Elizaveta Agrafenina’s Zwarte Avonden project, I found myself on stage three wonderful colleagues: Elizaveta, tenor Tyrone Landau and pianist Jaap Kooi who soon became as enthusiastic about the idea of performing the songs in Yiddish as I was.

… the project …

The program was quickly compiled: To the 11 songs I added the folk settings I could find and Tyrone arranged them for piano. We completed the program with Jewish/Yiddish songs of Ullmann, Milhaud en Ravel.

After months of planning, researching, arranging, trying, studying and rehearsing we are very happy with this project and very proud of the results. And therefore we want to share it with as many people as possible.

Foremost with those who want to come to listen to one of our three concerts on 20, 21 and 22 April in Weesp and Amsterdam. But also with our families that unfortunately won’t be able to come to the Netherlands; with our friends scattered all around the world and also with everybody else who is interested in the results of our experiment.

Therefore we chose three beautiful locations and we hope that you will come to listen! We will be performing
- on 20 April in the Van Houtenkerk in Weesp
- on 21 April in Salon de IJzerstaven in Amsterdam and
- on 22 April in Splendor Amsterdam.
For those that can’t come, we will record the concert live.

… and the money …

This project is rather costly and that is why we are asking your support. We still need 1200 euro for the rent of the locations and the costs of the recording. We chose beautiful venues in order to celebrate this beautiful music– Will you join us in this celebration? And will you help us to make the recording possible so that we can share the music with all who can’t be there?
