Maktub

Maktub is een album geïnspireerd op de verhalen van vluchtelingen, geschreven door Roos Meijer. Alle opbrengst van het album zal worden geïnvesteerd in muzieklessen in vluchtelingenkampen.

Het verhaal

Het afgelopen jaar heb ik vijf maanden doorgebracht in vluchtelingenkampen in Griekenland. Daar verzamelde ik verhalen van de mensen die ik ontmoette. Als verwerkingsproces voor mezelf, maar vooral ook als middel om deze verhalen te kunnen delen, schreef ik het album ‘Maktub’ (‘geschreven’ in het Arabisch).

Zes verhalen, omgetoverd tot nummers, vormen dit album. Met inspiraties als Selda en Fairuz, maar ook Bon Iver, kan je een bijzondere mix van Westerse en Oosterse popmuziek verwachten, die je meeneemt in de belevingswereld van een vluchteling.
Ben je benieuwd naar hoe dit klinkt? Op de achtergrond van het voordekunst filmpje hierboven kan je al twee sneak peaks horen van nummers die op Maktub zullen verschijnen!

Het album is niet alleen bedoeld om te raken, maar ook om bewustzijn te verspreiden. In het nieuws wordt alleen gepraat over getallen, over een crisis, over een probleem. Maar uiteindelijk gaat het wel over individuen, over mensen. En in mijn ogen moeten we liefde voor de mensheid met z’n allen meer stimuleren, in deze tijden van angst en haat.

Wie?

‘Maktub’ is een internationale samenwerking van vier jonge vrouwen die aan het begin van hun creatieve carrière staan: Julia Romana (illustraties en artwork, Londen), Sandra Pallier (animatie, Londen), Doris Veldman (productie, Den Haag), Roos Meijer (songwriting, arrangementen, gitaar en vocals, Den Haag & Amsterdam).

Tegenwoordig is beeld een ontzettend belangrijk component van de creatieve industrie. Daarom zal er bij elk nummer een illustratie gemaakt worden, die bij de lyrics in het boekje van de CD gedrukt zullen worden. Ook wordt er een animatie van Julia’s illustraties gemaakt bij het eerste nummer ‘Eyes of Innocence’, dat eind Maart online zal verschijnen. Deze video is bedoeld als aandacht voor de situatie en het opkomende album.

Waarom crowdfunden?

Om ‘Maktub’ mogelijk te kunnen maken heb ik jullie hulp nodig! De studio, mixen en masteren, cd’s drukken en artwork kosten allemaal geld..

2800 euro is een enorm bedrag voor één persoon, maar als we genoeg mensen vinden die een kleine bijdrage willen leveren zijn we er zo!

Buiten financiële hulp wil ik jullie ook vragen om de aandacht voor dit project zo ver mogelijk te verspreiden.

De opbrengst: Sounds of Change

Alle opbrengsten van de cd’s zullen gaan naar waar de inspiratie voor het album vandaan kwam: vluchtelingen. Dit doe ik door de winst te doneren aan een Nederlandse organisatie die net als ik muziek gebruikt om zich in te zetten voor vluchtelingen: Sounds of Change.

Sounds of Change is opgericht door Lucas Dols en is een organisatie die hulpverleners, docenten en vrijwilligers in en rondom conflictgebieden opleidt om muzieklessen te geven aan kinderen in vluchtelingenkampen.
‘Wij geloven dat kinderen het recht hebben om hun volledige potentieel te ontwikkelen. Muziek is een bewezen springplank en een zeer krachtig hulpmiddel voor de emotionele wonden van oorlog, het stimuleert creativiteit en stimuleert compassievolle communicatie.’

Buiten dat alle opbrengst van de cd’s aan Sounds of Change zal worden gedoneerd, zal ook al het geld dat gedoneerd wordt als de 100 procent al behaald is aan Sounds of Change worden geschonken.

Maktub is an album inspired by the stories of refugees, written by Roos Meijer. All the money raised by this album will be invested in music lessons in refugee camps.

The past year I spent five months in refugee camps in Greece. Being there, I gathered stories from the people I met. As a way of processing for myself, but especially as a way to share these stories, I wrote the album 'Maktub' ('written' in Arabic).

The album consists of six stories, transformed into songs. With inspirations like Selda and Fairuz, but also Bon Iver, you can expect a special mix of Western and Eastern pop music that takes you into the experience of a refugee.
Can't wait to hear how this sounds? In the background of the little movie at the top of this page, you can already hear sneak peaks of two songs that will appear on Maktub!

The album is also meant to spread awareness. The news only talks about numbers, about a crisis, about a problem. But ultimately it is about individuals, about people. And in my eyes, we must stimulate love for humanity together, in these times of fear and hatred.

'Maktub' is an international collaboration of four young women who are at the beginning of their creative career: Julia Romana (illustrations and artwork, London), Sandra Pallier (animation, London), Doris Veldman (production, The Hague), Roos Meijer (songwriting, arrangements, guitar and vocals, The Hague & Amsterdam).

Nowadays, image is an incredibly important component of the creative industry. That is why an illustration will be made for each song, which will be printed with the lyrics in the CD's booklet. There is also an animation of Julia's illustrations made at the first song 'Eyes of Innocence', which will appear online at the end of March. This video is meant to attract attention on the situation and the upcoming album.

In order to create 'Maktub', I need your help! The studio, mixing and mastering, CDs and artwork all cost money.

All money raised by the album, will go where the inspiration for the album came from: refugees. I am donating all the profits to a Dutch organization that, like me, uses music to support refugees: Sounds of Change.
