In onderstaande tekst vertel ik u graag meer over Kopi Susu.

Achtergrond:
Ik ben in Nederland geboren. In een kale nieuwbouwwijk in Amstelveen. Maar alles in ons huis ademde de voormalige kolonie Nederlands-Indië: de Javaanse beeldjes van vrouwen met blote borsten op het teakhouten dressoir, de zwierige batikrokken van mijn moeder in de linnenkast en de traditionele tjebok fles op het toilet.

Als tweede generatie Indo groeide ik op in een sfeer van verborgen herinneringen. Eenmaal in Nederland werd het koloniale verleden van mijn ouders voor eens en voor altijd afgesloten. Als kind bladerde ik urenlang in de verschoten leren fotoalbums uit Indië. Klein als ik was, hunkerde ik naar dat onbekende, exotische land, waar mijn ouders er ook zoveel gelukkiger uitzagen op die oude, vergeelde foto’s.

Geschiedenis:
In 1957 propten mijn ouders Indië in een paar hutkoffers en maakten zij, als onderdeel van de laatste grote repatriëringsgolf, de gedwongen oversteek naar Nederland. Meer dan vijftig jaar later reisde ik in omgekeerde richting naar Indonesië, als start voor mijn fotoprojekt Kopi Susu (Koffie met Melk in het Bahasa Indonesia), waar ik uiteindelijk zeven jaar aan zou werken.

Inhoud projekt:
Met Kopi Susu heb ik het heimwee-Indië van mijn ouders willen openbreken. Door Aziatisch en Europees, fictie en geschiedenis, overgeleverde familieverhalen en eigen ervaringen met elkaar te vermengen, verwijst Kopi Susu niet naar een onveranderlijk verleden, maar is het een tijdloze, imaginaire ruimte geworden.

Zo heb ik mijn bestaan als kind van twee werelden opnieuw vormgegeven in een poëtische beeldtaal, die meer wil uitdrukken dan een persoonlijke geschiedenis. Inmiddels leven er zo’n 1,2 miljoen Indo’s in Nederland, waarvan met name de 2e en 3e generaties zich zouden kunnen herkennen in de thematiek van Kopi Susu.

Boekpresentatie en tentoonstelling:
Op 19 november 2017 zal het boek Kopi Susu gepresenteerd worden tijdens de opening van mijn tentoonstelling (19-11-2017 – 11-02-2018), i.s.m het Indisch Herinneringscentrum, in Museum Bronbeek, Arnhem.

In the below text I would like to tell you more about my project Kopi Susu.

Background:
I was born in the Netherlands, in a barren new neighbourhood in Amstelveen. However, the atmosphere in our house oozed the former Dutch East Indies colony: Javanese statues of women with bare breasts on the teak dresser, my mother's flamboyant batik skirts in the linen closet and the traditional tjebok bottle in the toilet.

As a second generation Indo I grew up in an atmosphere of closeted memories. Once in the Netherlands, my parents' colonial past was buried once and for all. As a child, I browsed for hours through faded photos in their leather-bound photo albums from the East Indies. Small as I was, I longed for that unknown, exotic country, where my parents looked so much happier in those old, yellowed photographs.

History:
In 1957, my parents crammed the East Indies into a few trunks and, as part of the last major repatriation wave, made the forced crossing to the Netherlands. More than fifty years later, I travelled to Indonesia in the opposite direction, for the start of my photo project Kopi Susu (coffee with milk in Bahasa Indonesia), which I would eventually work on for seven years.

About the project:
With Kopi Susu I wanted to crack open my parents’ East Indies of nostalgia. By mingling Asian and European history with fiction, as well as handed down family stories and my own experiences, Kopi Susu does not refer to an unchanging past, but instead has become a timeless, imaginary space.

I have endeavoured to recreate my existence as a child of two worlds into a poetic visual language that wishes to express more than just a personal history. There are now approximately 1.2 million Indos living in the Netherlands, of which the second and third generations especially will be able to identify with the theme of Kopi Susu.

Book launch and exhibition:
On 19-11-2017, the book will be launched at the opening of the exhibition of Kopi Susu (19/11/2017 to 11/02/2018), in cooperation with the Indies Commemoration Centre, at Museum Bronbeek in Arnhem, the Netherlands.
