Wat gaan we doen?
Wij zijn uitgenodigd om begin november bij IMBALI in Johannesburg, Zuid-Afrika, 5 volle weken keramiek en beeldhouwen te geven aan jongvolwassenen uit de townships. Een belangrijke reden waarom wij als buitenlanders zijn uitgenodigd, is omdat wij daarmee hun kijk op de wereld verbreden en hun kennis van de hedendaagse kunst vergroten en we hebben veel ervaring met het werken met pubers en volwassenen. IMBALI is een driejarige opleiding. Zij biedt deze talentvolle jonge mensen een toekomstperspectief, waarbij kunst en vormgeving het uitgangspunt vormt. Hun kunstproducten worden o.a. via een eigen winkel verkocht in het Afrikamuseum in Johannesburg.

Hoe willen we dat vormgeven?
We introduceren bij de docenten en studenten enkele voor hun nieuwe beeldhouw- en keramische technieken en begeleiden ze naar hun examen toe. Dit wordt afgesloten met een tentoonstelling. Ze zullen door ons contacten kunnen leggen met galeries in Nederland, gespecialiseerd in Afrikaanse kunst.
We leren ze ook om hun persoonlijke ervaringen en kennis als een creatieve bron, een rijkdom van waaruit je kunt putten, te gaan gebruiken. Dit gebeurt naar aanleiding van een gezamenlijk bezoek aan Soweto. Ze leren samen te werken en elkaar te steunen, waardoor ze zelfvertrouwen kunnen ontwikkelen.
In de townships, waar ze wonen is het een kwestie van overleven, maar het is tegelijkertijd een hechte gemeenschap, waarin kunst een belangrijke rol kan spelen. We willen ze leren om hier op een positieve manier gebruik van te maken.

De kosten.
Dankzij IMBALI kunnen deze geweldige jonge mensen de invloeden van armoede, drugs en criminaliteit weerstaan en zijn ze in staat om een nieuwe toekomst op te bouwen. Zij zijn een voorbeeld voor hun omgeving. IMBALI houdt al 27 jaar het hoofd boven water door giften van buitenaf.
Wij ontvangen geen vergoeding van IMBALI, willen onze expertise aanbieden en hopen dat dit nog een steviger fundament voor hen zal vormen. Tegelijkertijd zal dit voor ons een rijke ervaring zijn, er ontstaat een wederzijds vertrouwen, er opent zich een andere wereld.
Ons project kost geld op het gebied van reiskosten, levensonderhoud, transportkosten, grondstoffen, materialen, gereedschappen, excursies met de groep, fotoafdrukken en tentoonstellingsinrichting.
Hiervoor vragen wij uw steun.
Wij bieden u een aantal mooie tegenprestaties en willen onze ervaringen graag met u delen.
We zouden het zeer op prijs stellen als u deze oproep deelt met uw vrienden en kennissen, opdat dit project een groot succes gaat worden! Nogmaals bedankt.
Bij donaties meer dan 100% wordt geld geïnvesteerd in de documentaire over Imbali, die onze beider zoons Lars Trim, camera, scenario en regie, Jesse Meulenbeek, geluid, scenario en regie, gaan maken tijdens de laatste 17 dagen van ons verblijf daar. Zij maakten ook het promotiefilmpje.

Ik werk meer dan 30 jaar als beeldend kunstenaar in Amsterdam met hout en brons, waarmee ik ook regelmatig exposeer in galeries en op buiten locaties in Nederland, daarnaast werkte ik als docent "creatieve activiteiten" met gedetineerden.
Samen met Karen Santen heb ik vele reizen ondernomen o.a. naar Nieuw-Zeeland, Fiji-eilanden, China, Chili, Finland, Afrika en India. Deze ervaringen werden op ons atelier verder uitgediept. Ik maakte diverse geluidssculpturen en paste dit toe in performances, zoals mijn CD "harthout". www.louisnienhuis.nl

Karen Santen.
Ik ben beeldend kunstenaar en maak beelden en installaties, waarbij de eigenschappen van de klei, het kleiige en tastbare heel belangrijk zijn. Door het maken van kleine en grote schetsen en schilderingen op papier, krijgen mijn
vorm.
Ik heb o.a. geëxposeerd in galerie de Witte Voet in Amsterdam, het Raveelmuseum in Machelen aan de Leie en het MAS in Antwerpen.
Tevens werkte ik 25 jaar als kunstenaar/docent Keramiek en Ruimtelijke Expressie bij de IVKO ( Individueel Voortgezet Kunstzinnig Onderwijs) in Amsterdam. Daar realiseerde ik samen met de leerlingen, oud-leerlingen en docenten een gevelsculptuur.

What are we going to do?

We have been invited to do a 5 week project by Imbali, a professional training provider from Johannesburg, South Africa, to teach young adults from various townships how to work with ceramics and create sculptures. One of the main reasons we, as foreign teachers, were invited by Imbali is to widen the students outlook on the world and enhance their knowledge of today’s art. Another reason we we're invited was due to our diverse and extensive experience in working with students and young adults.

Imbali is a 3 year educational program fundamentally focusing on art and offering talented young adults instruction on how to build a future in the arts. Once the program is finished, the students creations will be showcased and sold in the store of the Africamuseum in Johannesburg. www.imbali.za.org

How would we like to structure this?

We are planning to introduce new technics centred around sculpture and how to work with ceramics. We will guide the students to their final exam which will conclude with their final products being displayed and presented during an exhibition. After the course and exhibition, we will introduce the students to various Dutch galleries that specialize in African art to see if there are potential opportunities for future collaboration and exhibitions.

We are planning a class-trip to Soweto to teach the students how to convert their personal experiences and knowledge into creative inspiration for their art. The students will learn how to work as a team and support each other which will build and develop their confidence. The townships the students live in, tend to be very close and united communities, however ways in which to survive tends to be of main concern and focus- we believe art can play an important role here and we would like to teach them to use their lifestyle, traditions and existence in a positive and creative way.

The costs

Imbali has been funded by gifts from third parties for over 27 years now. As a result of Imbali, these wonderful young people can defy the influences of poverty, drugs and crime and have the ability to build a sustainable future for themselves and are role models for people in their communities.

To be clear, we will not receive any compensation for our work with Imbali, as we want to offer our expertise and experience in hopes to create an even better foundation for the students. However, this experience will enrich our connection and enthusiasm to art, teaching and youth, which will allow for mutual grain and trust in the world.

The cost of our project is comprised of: travel costs, life support, housing, transportation, materials, tools, excursions with the students, photoprints and installing the exhibition.

When our rate is more than 100%, we will use the money for a documentary of Imbali made the last 17 days in Johannesburg by Lars Trim and Jesse Meulenbeek, the producers of the promotion film.

Who are we?

Louis Niënhuis

I have been working in Amsterdam as a visual artist for more than 30 years focusing on sculptures. I mainly work with bronze and wood materials and showcase the sculptures in galleries and exhibitions throughout The Netherlands. Besides my work as a visual artist, I have also been working as a teacher of “creative activities”with detainees.

I have had the opportunity to travel the world with my wife Karen Santen and were able to explore countries such as New Zealand, Fiji Islands, China, Chili, Finland, Africa and India. We have had many powerful and influential experiences during these trips and have allowed these experiences to inspire and be incorporated into our work. For instance, I have recorded various sound samples in which I have integrated into several sculptures, which is used during performances and have thus created the CD ‘’Hardwood’’

Karen Santen.

I am a visual artist concentrating on sculptures and installations whereby the characteristics and tangible aspect of clay are very important to my work. My thoughts and ideas take shape by first creating big and small sketches and paintings on paper. I have had expositions at Gallery de Witte Voet in Amsterdam, The Raveelmuseum in Machelen aan de Leie and MAS in Antwerp. Besides my work as a visual artist, I have been working for more than 25 years as a ceramic and spatial expressions-teacher at the IVKO high school in Amsterdam. During this time, we were able to execute a façade sculpture on the high school building in collaboration with students and other teachers.
