In Metamorphosis Zoetrope attractie betreed je een levensgrote cocon waarin de metamorfose van een vlinder tot leven komt. Voor een moment sluit je je af van het dagelijks bestaan en ga je op in mijn mysterieuze, magische wereld.

De attractie draait letterlijk om een 3D zoetrope: een 19e eeuws apparaat dat een fysieke, analoge animatie laat zien. Je zet zelf de kringloop van het leven in beweging, door jezelf in een kring rond de zoetrope heen te draaien.

Wat ervaar je dan?

De metamorfose van deze vlinder! De vlinder legt een eitje, daaruit komt een rups. Deze eet, groeit, en kruipt naar het volgende plantje. Daar maakt hij een cocon, die dezelfde vorm heeft als de grote cocon waar je je op dat moment in bevindt. Uit deze cocon komt een zwarte vlinder met een menselijk skelet. Na het leggen van een eitje vliegt deze vlinder weg, en herhaalt het hele proces zich steeds weer opnieuw.

Op metaforische wijze verbeelden al deze stadia van verpopping de kringloop van leven en dood. Ieder stadium van ontwikkeling staat voor een bepaalde fase in verschillende groeiprocessen die je in je leven doormaakt. Samen vormen ze een ecosysteem waarin alle elementen met elkaar in verbinding staan en in balans zijn. De groeiende plant waaraan de rups zich voedt en het licht in het midden waarin de vlinder uiteindelijk verdwijnt, ze zijn allemaal essentieel in dit proces.

Wat heeft mij geïnspireerd om dit te maken?

Ik ben altijd gefascineerd geweest door vlinders. Het lijkt wonderbaarlijk en surreëel dat een rups zich in zijn leven kan evolueren tot een prachtige vlinder die kan vliegen. Ik droomde ervan net zo te kunnen vliegen.

Daarom besloot ik toen ik drie jaar geleden aan dit ontwerp begon, paragliding lessen te nemen. Tijdens de landing van mijn eerste solovlucht viel ik uit de lucht en brak ik mijn ruggengraat. Op het moment dat de chirurg in het ziekenhuis me een model van de ruggengraat liet zien, wist ik dat de rups er zo uit moest gaan zien; als een kruipende ruggengraat. Ik was geschokt door de schoonheid van de botten; zuivere en sierlijke overblijfselen van leven dat is teruggebracht tot de absolute basis. Hoe ze zijn gegroeid en ontwikkeld tot een vorm die perfect aansluit bij zijn functie. Ik ben geïnspireerd door hoe in de natuur levensvormen zich evolueren, waarbij schoonheid en functionaliteit elkaar versterken; de schoonheid van menselijke lichamen, de functionaliteit van vlindervleugels. In dit werk zie je net zulke elegante en functionele vormen, organische en geometrische. Ieder element heeft een functie; de hoekige vormen aan de bovenkant van de kooi zijn niet alleen mooi, maar maken de vorm ook sterk.

De figuren in de zoetrope zijn zwart, wit en grijs, als zwart-witfilms uit de ontstaansperiode van de techniek. Deze tinten komen ook voort uit de depressieve periode waar ik in zat toen ik aan dit werk begon. Ik had en heb soms de neiging om vanbinnen stil te vallen, of in gedachten achteruit te draaien, terug in mijn herinnering. Als ik Metamorphosis Zoetrope zie, maakt de betekenis van het werk me er van bewust dat ik altijd vooruit moet blijven draaien, om mijn innerlijk leven zich verder te laten ontwikkelen. Zo inspireert mijn leven me om mijn werk te maken en inspireert mijn werk me om mijn leven te leven.

Het maakproces van dit werk is voor mij een artistiek en persoonlijk groeiproces, net als het groeiproces dat de zoetrope verbeeldt. Iedere ontwikkeling komt voort uit en is gefundeerd op de ontwikkeling die eraan vooraf ging. Het doet me realiseren dat in het maakproces van dit werk, en in ieder proces in het leven, iedere fase zijn tijd en ruimte nodig heeft om natuurlijk te groeien en zich uit zijn cocon te ontworstelen. Als je een vlinder uit haar cocon zou halen, zou ze niet kunnen vliegen. Ze heeft de worsteling van het er uit kruipen nodig om de kracht ervoor door haar vleugels te laten stromen.

De cocon, en de buitenkant van de attractie hebben een beschermende, puntige, schildachtige vorm, als een huis of het schild van een krab. De lange herstelperiode in het ziekenhuis heb ik als een ‘coconfase’ ervaren, wat deze vorm geïnspireerd heeft. Ik ben soms geneigd om me af te sluiten en me terug te trekken in mijn eigen wereldje. Door je uit te nodigen in Metamorphosis Zoetrope attractie wil ik me naar je open stellen om binnen te treden in de mooie macabere wereld in mijn hoofd, en deze in beweging te zetten. Je vragen om letterlijk mijn cocon binnen te stappen en mijn innerlijke ecosysteem; het leven in mijn innerlijke wereld, te ervaren. Ik hoop dat jij je, als je het kunstwerk ervaart, op je eigen manier kunt herkennen in de verschillende stadia van metamorfose. In hoe dood en ontstaand leven, letterlijk en figuurlijk, constant aanwezig zijn in het leven. Wat voor transformatie heb jij meegemaakt in je leven, of maak je op dit moment door? In welke fase van het groeiproces bevind je je nu?

Hoe heb ik dit bedacht?

Ik kwam op het idee voor een attractie waarin je om een zoetrope heen draait, nadat ik een aantal jaar geleden op een tentoonstelling de Pixar Zoetrope zag. Ik had nog nooit eerder een 3D zoetrope gezien en was enorm onder de indruk hoe levensecht de figuurtjes in beweging kwamen. Ik was gefascineerd door de techniek en wist gelijk dat ik ook een zoetrope wilde maken, ook al zou het enorm veel werk zijn.

Tijdens mijn studie Illustratie aan de Willem de Kooning academie ontwikkelde ik interesse in het maken van kunst die een belevenis is waar je volledig in op gaat, als een attractie. Hieruit ontstond mijn droom om een attractie te ontwerpen en realiseren, waarin je mijn surreële wereld ervaart. Een magische attractie zoals je die zou kunnen vinden in The Night Circus van Erin Morgenstern of de fairy market in Stardust van Neil Gaiman.

Ik zou in mijn leven, als kunstenaar, een paradijs op aarde willen creëren waar fantasie realiteit word. Waar iedereen kan groeien, ontdekken en spelen als kinderen. Waar pijn en genot, schoonheid en duisternis elkaar versterken. Waar je verkeert tussen droom en realiteit, bedwelmd door bloemen die bloeien in de nacht.

Het eerste idee voor Metamorphosis Zoetrope attractie ontstond toen ik stage liep bij de afdeling Design en Development van de Efteling, waar ik constant omringd was door alle magische ervaringen die daar te beleven zijn. Het werk daar, en alle collega’s om me heen bezig zien aan het ontwerpen van attracties gaf me een idee van het proces van het ontwerpen en de realisatie van een attractie.

Een zoetrope is een 19e eeuwse animatietechniek waar uiteindelijk de zwartwitfilm uit is voortgekomen. Normaal draait een zoetrope rond en is het een object om naar te kijken. Ik wilde een ervaring creëren waar je onderdeel van uit maakt en in op gaat. Ik dacht, wat zou je ervaren als de zoetrope stil staat, en jij zelf er om heen draait? Kan dit? Met de technische werking van de Villa Volta in de Efteling en de Pixar zoetrope in mijn achterhoofd, zag ik voor me hoe het zou kunnen, en na wat testen bleek; dat kan! De bewegende figuren zijn op deze manier nog scherper te zien, met minder motion blur dan bij een normale zoetrope. Het effect is nog wonderlijker, je voelt, ziet en begrijpt haast niet meer wat er stil staat en wat er beweegt. Dit word de eerste zoetrope ter wereld waar jij omheen draait!

Hoe werkt het?

Je gaat zitten op de ronde bank in de attractie. Deze biedt plaats aan zeven personen. Samen draai je jezelf rond de zoetrope heen. Iedere keer als je één van de 16 frames van de animatie recht voor je ziet, geeft de lantaarn in het midden van de zoetrope 1 korte lichtflits. Zo komen de papieren sculptuurtjes van de rupsen, vlinders en plantjes tot leven, als een film.

Ik plak alle papieren sculptuurtjes met de hand in elkaar. Een rups kost ongeveer 30 minuten om in elkaar te plakken, een cocon 45 minuten en een plantje ruim een uur. Er zijn meer dan 30 cocons, meer dan 70 rupsen, 16 plantjes en meer dan 60 vlinders te zien in de installatie. Alle details moeten exact hetzelfde zijn in iedere rups en vlinder, en op de juiste plaats bevestigd zijn, om de animatie goed te laten verlopen. Ik ben alle papieren sculptuurtjes die je ziet op de foto's van het schaalmodel opnieuw aan het maken, dubbel zo groot, voor de zoetrope in het midden van de attractie. Ik werk ook aan de grote metalen kooi waar ze in terecht gaan komen.

De attractie wordt gebouwd op een aanhangwagen zodat hij makkelijk te vervoeren is naar verschillende evenementen. De bouw is al een eind op weg!

Waarom heb ik jouw bijdrage nodig?

De totale kosten van de bouw van Metamorphosis Zoetrope attractie liggen rond de 23.000 euro. Deze kosten bestaan uit; een op maat gebouwde aanhangwagen, een draaiende attractie met ombouw en materialen voor de kooi in het midden. Ik zou graag een deel van dit bedrag via crowdfunding bij elkaar willen halen.

Step inside Metamorphosis Zoetrope attraction; a life-sized cocoon, in which the metamorphosis of a butterfly comes to life. Leave daily life behind for a moment and become a part of my mysterious, wondrous world.

The attraction literally revolves around a 3D zoetrope; a machine that shows a physical, analog animation. You set the ever-repeating circle of life in motion, by spinning yourself around the zoetrope.

What do you experience?

The metamorphosis of this butterfly! The butterfly lays an egg, from which a caterpillar emerges. It eats, grows, and crawls its way to the next plant. There, it makes a cocoon, in the same shape of the big cocoon you are sitting in at that moment. Out of the cocoon, a black butterfly with a human skeleton emerges. After laying an egg, the butterfly flies away and the process repeats itself again and again.

Metaphorically, these phases of transformation represent the circle of life and death, and all of the different phases and growth processes you go through in life. All the elements are interconnected, like an ecosystem. The growing plants from which the caterpillars feed and the light in the middle in which the butterfly disappears are all essential in this natural process.

What inspired me to make this?

Butterflies have always fascinated me. It seems wondrous and surreal that a caterpillar can evolve into a beautiful flying butterfly. I used to dream of being able to fly like that.

That’s why I decided, when I started this design 3 years ago, to take paragliding lessons. At the end of my first solo flight, I fell from the sky and broke my spine. When the surgeon in the hospital showed me a model of the spine, I knew that was what I wanted the caterpillar to look like; like a crawling spine. I was shocked by the beauty of the bones; pure and elegant remainders of life. How they’ve grown and developed into a shape that perfectly complements its function. I’m inspired by how organisms in nature evolve in a way in which beauty and functionality complement each other; the beauty of human bodies, the function of butterfly wings. In this work, you can see equally elegant and functional shapes, both organic and geometric ones. Every element has a function; the angular shapes at the top of the cage are not just beautiful but also strengthen the shape.

The paper sculptures in the zoetrope are black, white and grey, like old film from the time the technique was invented. The choice for these shades also stems from the depression I going through while I started this project. I (used to) have a tendency to go silent inside, or to spin backwards in time in my mind. When I see Metamorphosis Zoerope, it reminds me to always spin forwards, in order for my inner life to grow and develop. My life inspires me to create my art and my art inspires me to live my life.

The process of creation of this work is a personal and artistic growth process for me, just like the growth process the zoetrope represents. Every development comes forth from the one it precedes. It makes me realize that in this process of creation, as in every process in life, every phase needs its time and space to develop naturally and emerge from its cocoon. If you would take a butterfly out of its cocoon, she would not be able to fly. She needs the struggle of crawling out of the cocoon to let the force that will give her the strength to fly, flow through her wings.

The cocoon, and the exterior of the attraction have a protective, angular, shield-like shape, like a house or a crab’s shell. I experienced the long recovery period in the hospital as a ‘cocoon phase’ that inspired this shape. I sometimes tend to hide underneath my metaphorical shield and retreat into my inner world. By inviting you into Metamorphosis Zoetrope attraction, I want to open up to you and invite you to step into the beautiful macabre world in my mind, and set it in motion. To literally step into my cocoon and experience my inner world; my inner ecosystem. I hope you can recognize yourself, in your own way, in the different phases of metamorphosis when you experience it. How death and originating life are, literally and metaphorically, always present in life. What transformation have you gone through in your life, or are you going through at the moment? Which phase of growth are you in right now?

How did I come up with this?

The idea for an attraction in which you spin around a zoetrope came to me after seeing the Pixar zoetrope at an exhibition a few years ago. I had never seen a 3D zoetrope before and I was amazed by how lifelike the figurines were set in motion. I was fascinated by the technique and immediately knew I wanted to make a zoetrope, even though it would be huge lot of work.

While studying Illustration at the Willem de Kooning academy, I developed an interest in creating art that is an immersive experience, on the intersection between art and attraction. So, my dream to design and build an attraction in which you can experience my surreal word, developed. A magical attraction like one would find in The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern or the fairy market in Neil Gaiman’s Stardust.

In my life, I would want to contribute to creating a paradise on earth where imagination becomes reality. Where everyone can grow, discover and play like children. Where pain and pleasure and darkness and beauty emphasize each other. Where you drift between dreams and reality, your senses intoxicated by flowers that bloom after dark.

The idea for Metamorphosis Zoetrope attraction first arose by the end of my internship at the Design and Development department of themepark the Efteling. The work I did, being constantly surrounded by all the wondrous adventures you can experience there, and seeing all my colleagues work on the design of attractions gave me an idea of the process of designing and creating an attraction.

A zoetrope is a 19th century technique from which film evolved. Usually, a zoetrope spins around and you can look at it. I wanted to create an emersive experience that you set in motion. I thought; what would you experience if the zoetrope stood still, and instead, you would spin around it? Does this work? With the Villa Volta in the Efteling and the Pixar zoetrope in the back of my mind, I imagined how it could work, and after some testing, I found out it is possible! You can see the animated figures even sharper, with less motion blur than a regular zoetrope. The effect is even more surreal; you can't distinguish anymore what is moving and what is standing still. This will be the first zoetrope in the world that you spin yourself around!

How does it work?

You take a seat on the circular bench inside the attraction. It can seat seven people. Together, you spin yourselves around the zoetrope. Every time one of the 16 frames of the animation is right in front of you, the light at the centre of the zoetrope flashes. The paper sculptures of caterpillars, butterflies and growing plants seem to come alive in front of your eyes, like a film.

I've glued all the paper sculptures together by hand. A caterpillar takes about 30 minutes to make, a cocoon 45 minutes and a plant over an hour. The installation consists of over 30 cocoons, over 70 caterpillars, 16 plants and over 60 butterflies. All details must be exactly alike in every caterpillar and butterfly, to make the animation flow. I'm currenty working on recreating all of the paper sculptures you see in the pictures of the scalemodel, at double the size. I'm also building the big metal cage they will live in.

The attraction is being built on a trailer, so it’s easily transportable between festivals. Construction has already commenced!

Why do I need your contribution?

The total costs of building Metamorphosis Zoetrope attraction lie around 23.000 euros. These costs consist of; a trailer, built to fit the attraction, the attraction built on top of it and materials for the zoetrope. I would want to collect part of the money through this crowdfunding campaign.
