Space, the ultimate goal
Hi crowd! I'm Monki and I'm creating a circus theatre show using my circus-specialty: double pole acrobatics. Because that uses special equipment, I can't just work anywhere. I need a special space to work to safely install my equipment.
For my poles I need a room with height (8 meters) and special anchor points, to attach my 'rigging' to. With your donation I will be able to rent a suitable location and get to work to amaze the world with my Monki Business!
Below you will find some pictures to give an idea of the equipment I use, what I do with it and why I need that special space to work. Pictures by: Andreas Bergmann Steen, Ola Glimåker, Els van der Kolk and Megin Zondervan
The show I'm making is called Not Somewhere Else; an Ode to the Underdog. It's a circus theatre show with live music, spoken word and double pole acrobatics.
'Not Somewhere Else' is about us. About the way we live together in our society. About how we need to install systems and rules to make living together on such a large scale possible and that this can make life very hard for some people, the underdogs.
The show will be an intimate meeting between the audience and Monki. At first glance he seems crazy and beyond understanding. But through text, movement and music, we will get to know Monki and his frustrations.
I hope that 'Not Somewhere Else' will invite people to reconsider some of the choices we take as a society without even thinking about it. Not by preaching any better way but just by making observations and presenting them in a humorous yet critical form.
Concept, text and performance: Benjamin MONKI Kuitenbrouwer. End direction: Dick Hauser. Outside eye: Valia Beauvieux. Musical direction: Wojtek MAXIMON Gasiorowski.
MONKI Business is the one-man-collective of Benjamin 'Monki' Kuitenbrouwer. Monki makes circus theatre performances that use text and double pole acrobatics. With a raw and direct style, he talks about his views on life, blending humour and critical observations.
