Layers of Reality is a story about the beauty of individual perception.
We want to publish a photobook that invites the reader into the colourful world of synaesthesia.
As long as I can remember, I feel in colours. Over the last years, I grew more and more intrigued into this phenomenon, mostly because it seemed impossible to me to explain how I feel. I found the scientific terminology for it: synaesthesia - which can be translated as melting of the senses.
Long regarded as a neurological aberration, more and more scientist claim that it is a perfectly normal phenomenon and that a lot of people are experiencing synaesthetic experiences in one way or the other. Some people for example taste the words they pronounce, see colours when listening to music or smell the voices of the people around them. There are endless combinations. An approximate 7% of the population is supposed to experience strong synaesthetic reactions. Based on my private photographic archive, I started an artistic research to understand this phenomenon. Where do the colours come from, when do they appear, what influences them? What exactly is synaesthesia, how do others deal with it, and is it a burden or a gift? How can I communicate my way of seeing the world? How to explain an individual reality?
I want to show that reality is not a static construct, but that it relies on our senses and on the way our brain processes information. The world looks a little different to everyone.
Through my work, I want to raise awareness for synaesthesia and show that synaesthetes are not strange – they just perceive a few more layers of reality. I think that a lot people have one or the other form of synaesthesia, but most of them are not aware of it. With this book, we want to introduce you into synaesthesia and show you the beauty of this amazing phenomenon.
Layers of Reality is meant to be published! Together with neuroscientists, psychologists, philosophers and graphic designers, we are working hard on this project. My photography mixes with facts and numbers about synsesthesia to open up this phenomenon in a beautiful way. Arts and science! With your help, we can turn our efforts into a splendid international edition to make our work accessible to others: synaesthetes, photographers, art lovers, fact lovers, dreamers, truth seekers, colour collectors, believers and doubters, you and me.
Will you help us realise this project? We started a crowdfunding so that your support will make this edition possible. Next to our endless gratitude, there are some nice perks to obtain when you decide to support us – have a look!
