Wat gaat StudioZambia doen?

Deze zomer creëert en produceert StudioZambia een toneelstuk rond het thema ‘gender’, volledig geschreven door kinderen uit de Luangwa Vallei in Zambia.

Deze jonge nieuwe theaterschrijvers onderzoeken op papier en op toneel hoe het is om op te groeien als meisje in deze regio. Is dat anders dan voor jongens?

Als Eva aan Adam geschonken werd, zijn meisjes er dan alleen om jongens te verzorgen en te vermaken?

Zijn mannen en vrouwen wezenlijk anders? Hebben ze andere hersenen met andere functies of had Simone de Beauvoir gelijk toen ze zei: ‘Je wordt niet als vrouw geboren, je wordt tot vrouw gemaakt’..?

Verlangen alle vrouwen werkelijk om gered te worden door een prins? En willen mannen echt jagen of willen ze eigenlijk veel liever thuis voor de kinderen zorgen?

Waarom is dit belangrijk?

Diepgewortelde ideeën rondom gender staan goed onderwijs dagelijks in de weg in de Luangwa Valley. Veel tienermeisjes stoppen vroegtijdig met school omdat ze voor hun familie moeten zorgen. Daarnaast mogen meisjes niet naar school als ze ongesteld zijn, en veel meisjes worden het slachtoffer van (seksueel) geweld. Dit wordt vaak verzwegen, maar de emotionele gevolgen zijn verstrekkend en dat maakt het moeilijk om te kunnen functioneren op school. Hoewel vooral meisjes en vrouwen te lijden lijken te hebben onder deze problemen, zijn het de algemene, wijdverspreide ideeën over hoe mannen en vrouwen zich moeten gedragen en zich tot elkaar zouden moeten verhouden, die een effect hebben op álle kinderen die opgroeien in deze regio.

De dialoog aangaan over dit onderwerp kan helpen om meer inzicht te krijgen in hoe het is om op te groeien als jongen of als meisje, maar ook in wat voor man of vrouw de kinderen later hopen te worden. Het uitdrukken van deze gedachten en dromen kan bewustwording bewerkstelligen in de gemeenschap en nieuwe kansen voor deze kinderen creëren om hun schooltijd optimaal te kunnen benutten. Omdat het openlijk bespreken van deze gevoelige onderwerpen niet gebruikelijk is, zochten wij naar een manier die sociaal geaccepteerd is om het ijs op een positieve manier te breken: met theater!

Wij geloven dat ieder kind, jongen of meisje, het verdient om niet alleen naar school te gaan, maar hun opleiding ook af te maken. Wij geloven dat ruimte bieden aan kinderen om hun verhaal te vertellen en zich te kunnen uiten middels theater, een enorme impact kan hebben op hun gemeenschap.”

Hoe?

Met behulp van de PlayMaking methode die ontwikkeld werd in New York in 1981 door Willie Reale, schrijft en repeteert een groep kinderen uit de Luangwa Valley gedurende vijf weken hun eigen toneelstuk. Uiteindelijk wordt het toneelstuk opgevoerd met professionele acteurs van de lokale theatergroep SEKA, voor de hele gemeenschap, en krijgen de kinderen het applaus dat ze zo verdienen.

Bij deze PlayMaking lessenreeks, die gericht is op het schrijven en maken van zelfgeschreven toneelstukken, staat het groeiende zelfvertrouwen van de kinderen centraal. Net als bij het succesvolle 52nd Street Project in New York en Studio52nd in Amsterdam, gaat het niet zozeer om de acteerlessen zelf, hoewel de kinderen wel degelijk leren spelen. Het gaat ook niet zozeer om de schrijflessen zelf, hoewel de kinderen wel degelijk leren hoe je een toneelstuk schrijft. Het gaat eerst en vooral om het hebben van een succeservaring. De kans om te laten zien dat het kind iets te bieden heeft, iets unieks dat hij of zij alleen bezit, iets dat niemand ze af kan nemen.

Over ons en onze partners

Onder de vleugels van Academics For Development hebben Esther Mulders, David Winant en Annoek Snip maanden gezocht naar de beste manier om hun lokale ontwikkelingspartner ProjectLuangwa te kunnen ondersteunen. In antwoord op het verzoek met artistieke middelen bewustzijn en dialoog te creëren in de gemeenschap rondom het thema gender, vonden Annoek, Esther en David in de PlayMaking methode de ideale match.

Annoek werkt al enkele jaren, onder andere als docente, voor Studio52nd in Amsterdam. Het implementeren van dit curriculum in Zambia voelt als een logische stap. Toen het plan verder ontwikkeld werd, heeft Anke Kuypers zich bij de groep gevoegd. Als actrice en zangeres heeft zij aan meerdere projecten van Studio52nd meegewerkt.

Academics for Development (AFD) selecteert gedreven studenten van de KULeuven van verschillende faculteiten en brengt ze met elkaar in contact om op een betekenisvolle en duurzame manier een sociaal project vorm te geven in het Zuiden. Door het combineren van hun verschillende expertises, werken de studenten gedurende circa tien maanden om erachter te komen op welke manier zij hun projectpartner het beste kunnen helpen. Vervolgens implementeren zij hun project zelf, gedurende de zomer.

Project Luangwa is een liefdadigheidsorganisatie die op een effectieve, coöperatieve manier lokale gemeenschappen helpt om hun economische vooruitzichten te verbeteren. Dit doen ze door middel van onderwijs en trainingen, opdat families meer kans hebben op een blijvend inkomen. Ze zien het als hun missie om meer kinderen de kans te geven op scholing. Vanaf de start van Project Luangwa in 2009 is er al enorm veel vooruitgang geboekt. Op dit moment heeft Project Luangwa acht scholen onder haar hoede, waar veel verschillende diensten worden verleend. Veel studenten hebben daardoor nu de kans op een gedegen opleiding. Dat vormt de basis voor een toekomst als getrainde professionals die van grote waarde kunnen zijn voor hun eigen gemeenschap. Het valt Project Luangwa op dat families meer en meer leunen op vrouwen als kostwinners. Om die rol te kunnen vervullen moeten vrouwen en meisjes in zichzelf en hun capaciteiten geloven. Jonge meisjes in landelijke delen van Afrika hebben te maken met veel problemen die hen belemmeren om onderwijs te genieten en zich optimaal te ontwikkelen. Die problemen variëren van gedwongen huwelijken, tienerzwangerschappen, seksueel misbruik of weinig of geen toegang tot hygiënische producten tot simpelweg weinig zelfvertrouwen.

Studio 52nd maakt theater met kinderen die om één of andere reden zijn opgegroeid in een kansarme situatie. Studio52nd ziet het als haar plicht om deze kinderen, die op de achterste bank in de maatschappij zijn beland, in de schijnwerpers te zetten. Ze willen gemeenschappen laten zien waartoe hun kinderen in staat zijn door zelfgeschreven verhalen tot leven laten komen op een podium. Omdat Studio52nd gelooft dat geen enkel kind zijn droom zou moeten opgeven door obstakels die ze tegenkomen in hun jonge leven, hopen ze het zelfvertrouwen en de eigenwaarde van de kinderen te laten groeien door hen deze succeservaring te bezorgen. Door de zelfgeschreven toneelstukken op te voeren met professionele acteurs en de kinderen een luid applaus te geven, wil Studio52nd de kinderen laten weten dat er naar ze geluisterd wordt en ze serieus worden genomen. Net zoals ze verdienen.

SEKA Theatre is een collectief van artiesten uit de LuangwaVallei. Zij maken theaterstukken om de mensen bewust te maken van de problematiek in de lokale gemeenschap. Ze geloven in verandering van omstandigheden door de mensen aan te zetten tot nadenken met behulp van kunst - voornamelijk theater en verhalen. De theatergroep zelf bestaat uit acteurs geboren en getogen in dezelfde regio als waar ze nu werkzaam zijn. Hierdoor kunnen de acteurs de volledige problematiek begrijpen vooraleer ze theaterstukken schrijven om de kwesties aan te pakken. Het interactieve karakter van de voorstellingen zorgt voor een grote betrokkenheid van het publiek bij de problemen zelf en laat ook toe om samen op zoek te gaan naar oplossingen en hoe deze te implementeren. Door het veelvuldig gebruik van humor, visuele beeldvorming, poppen, zang en dans, heeft SEKA een reputatie opgebouwd als een effectief kanaal voor het verbaliseren van maatschappelijke noden.

Wat zal er met het geld gedaan worden?

Allereerst is het belangrijk om te weten dat elke opgehaalde euro rechtstreeks naar het opzetten van de toneelstukken zelf gaat!

Al onze persoonlijke kosten zoals vliegtuigtickets, accommodatie en eten zullen door onszelf betaald worden. Wij doen dit op vrijwillige basis omdat wij geloven dat kinderen groeien door het krijgen van applaus en dat het vertellen van hun eigen verhaal aan hun gemeenschap door middel van theater de samenhang, solidariteit en daardoor ook de kwaliteit van hun (sociale) levens versterkt.

Nu waar gaan jouw zeer gewaardeerde donaties precies naartoe?

· Een kleine dagelijkse vergoeding voor de lokale acteurs van theatergroep SEKA opdat ze met ons zouden kunnen samenwerken zonder dat ze plots niet meer zouden kunnen voorzien voor hun eigen familie.

· Transportkosten tussen de scholen, theatergroep en het kantoor van Luangwa Valley

· Cursusmateriaal (pen, papier, mappen…)

· (Materiaal voor) kostuums

· (Materiaal voor) rekwisieten en decor

· Lunch voor de kinderen (aangezien ze het vaak anders niet krijgen)

· Klein bedrag voor het gebruik van een zaal voor de voorstelling

So what will StudioZambia do?

This summer StudioZambia will create and produce a theater play around the subject gender, that will be written in its entirety by the children from the Luangwa Valley. These new young PlayWriters will explore, on paper and on stage,how they experience for instance growing up as a girl in this region. Is it different from how boys experience it? If Eve was given to Adam, are girls here just to nurture and entertain boys? Are men and women fundamentally different? Do they have different brains with different tasks or was Simone de Beauvoir right in saying: "One is not born, but rather becomes a woman"...? Do all women long to be saved by a prince? And do men really want to hunt or do they secretly prefer taking care of their children at home?

Why is it important?

Deep-seated issues involving gender interfere with a good education on a daily basis in the Luangwa Valley. Drop-out rates are high for teenage women because they need to take care of their families from a very young age. Also, girls are not allowed to go to school when they are having their period, and many suffer (sexual) abuse that is often concealed,although the emotional effects are far-reaching and make it very difficult to function in school. Even though many of these issues seem to affect mostly girls and women, it's actually the common thoughts on how women and men should behave and relate, that affects all children growing up in this area.

Opening a conversation on this matter might help on not only gaining a deeper insight on how the children experience growing up as a boy or a girl, but also on their hopes for the future in becoming a man or a woman. Expressing these thoughts and hopes can create awareness among the community and fundamentally open up new opportunities for these children in gaining full benefit of their education. Still, since openly talking about this rather sensitive subject is not common, we searched for a way that is accepted in this community and is capable of to break the ice in a positive way: through theatre!

"We believe that every child deserves to not only learn what’s on the reading-list, but to explore what's beyond. We believe that every child, boy or girl, deserves to not only go to school, but to finish it. We believe that creating the space for children to tell their story and express themselves through theatre, can have an immense social impact."

How?

Through the PlayMaking method that was founded in NewYork in 1981 by Willie Reale, we will write and rehearse with a group of kids from the Luangwa Valley during for a period of five weeks. In the end, together with the professional actors of the local theatre-group SEKA, the play will be performed in front of the local community to give their kids the applause they deserve.

This PlayMaking course, that is dedicated to the creation and production of self written plays, is about making children proud of themselves. As the successful 52nd Street Project in New York and Studio52nd in Amsterdam, it is not about teaching children to act, although they will learn to. It is not about teaching them to write plays, although they will learn that as well. It is first and foremost about giving a kid an experience of success.It is about giving a kid an opportunity to prove that he or she has something valuable to offer, something that comes from within that he or she alone possesses, something that cannot be taken away.

What will be done with the money?

First of all it might be good to know that every penny will go directly towards the creation of the actual play. All our personal costs, such as airplane tickets, accommodation and food, will of course be fully paid for by ourselves. We do this on complete voluntary basis out of the sheer believe that kids really grow by getting applause and that telling their story to their community through theatre strengthens connections, solidarity and through that also the quality of their (social) lives.

That being said, your highly appreciated donations wíll be spend on:

- A small Daily Submitted Allowance for the actors of theatre-group SEKA, so they can manage to work with us (without suddenly not being able to provide for their families).

- Transportation between the schools, the theatre group, and the office of Luangwa Valley.

- Course-materials (pens, papers, flip-overs etc.)

- (Materials for) Costumes.

- (Materials for) Props and set-design.

- Lunch for children (since they often don’t have that themselves).

- Small fee for the use of the theatre location.

- Simple copied flyers to invite the local community and all guests of surrounding lodges.

A little bit of history about us and our partners:

Under the wings of Academics For Development, Esther Mulders, David Winant and Annoek Snip invested months in figuring out how to best support their local developmental partner in the South: Project Luangwa. In response to their expressed need of an artistic approach on raising awareness and opening the conversation about gender in the community, Annoek, Esther and David found the PlayMaking method a perfect fit. Since Annoek works and teaches for Studio52nd in Amsterdam for quite some years now, implementing their curriculum in Zambia seemed a logical step.By the time the whole plan really came to live, Anke Kuypers joined us on our journey to support and complement StudioZambia. As a singer and actress she was a part of many (!) of Studio52nd's performances.

Academics for Development**(AFD)** chooses and connects dedicated students from different faculties, to create a meaningful and sustainable social impact in a developing country. By combining their different college backgrounds, the project-students will then work for about 10 months on trying to figure out what kind of support would fit the project partners’ need the best, to then help implement this support themselves during the summer.

Project Luangwa is a charitable organization that aims to create an effective, coordinated approach for helping local communities improve their long-term economic prospects, by developing and improving education in schools and creating training opportunities that can help families have the chance of a lasting and sustainable income. They see it as its mission to increase the number of children that have the possibility to go to school and can profit from a sound education. From the start of Project Luangwa in 2009, it has made impressive progress. At this moment there are eight schools under their supervision, where many services are facilitated. Because of Project Luangwa a large number of students enjoy solid education and this forms the basis for a future in which they are trained professionals that are of great value to their own communities. With increasing regularity Project Luangwa notices that families are relying on women as the providers. In order for them to fulfill this role and help their families survive, women and girls need to believe in themselves and their abilities. Young girls in rural areas of Africa face many problems that prevent them getting an education and realizing their potential. These problems may range from forced early marriages, teenage pregnancy, sexual abuse and little or no access to sanitary products to a simple lack of self-esteem.

Studio 52nd makes theatre with kids that somehow grow up in a disadvantaged situation, and sees it as its duty to put these kids, which ended up in the last row in society, in the spotlights. They want to show communities what their own children are capable of, by letting the self written stories of the kids come to life onstage. Because Studio52nd believes no child should give up dreams due to obstacles they face in their young lives, they aim to let the kids grow in self-confidence by giving them this successful experience. Through the performance of their self-written plays by professional actors on a real stage and giving the kids a loud applause, Studio52nd wants to let these kids experience they're being listened to and taken seriously. Just as they deserve.

SEKA Theatre consists of a collective of artists from the Luangwa Valley who create theatre-plays to address pressing issues in the community. They believe in changing circumstances by changing minds and changing minds through the arts - theatre and stories in particular. Because SEKA is composed of actors that grew up and live in the area where they work now, the actors are able to fully understand the issues at stake before creating plays to address these issues. The participatory nature of the performances allows the audience to take ownership of their issues as well as to suggest and implement the solutions to these issues. By their theatrical use of humor, visual imagery,puppets, and local song and dance forms SEKA has earned a reputation as an effective channel for the vocalizing of community concerns.
