Wat willen we bereiken met het project?

Argentijns kunstenares Julieta Garcia Vazquez kwam naar Eindhoven om een proces van verandering in Woensel-West te begeleiden. De wijk ondergaat op dit moment namelijk een ingrijpende transformatie: een deel van de bestaande woningen wordt gesloopt en vervangen door nieuwbouw. Dit heeft ingrijpende gevolgen voor de bevolkingssamenstelling en het aanzien van de wijk.

Het doel van het project is het behoud van de collectieve herinnering van de wijk. Julieta G Vazquez stelde daarom voor om samen met de buurt één van de traditionele arbeiderswoningen uit te kiezen dat als monument voor de industrialisatie en verzorgingsstaat behouden zou blijven. De keuze viel op Stephensonstraat 66. Een huis waarin een werknemer van Philips en zijn familie voor meer dan zestig jaar heeft gewoond.

Het gekozen pand werd steen voor steen afgebroken en de afzonderlijke materialen krijgen een tweede leven in de vorm van architectonische en sculpturale ingrepen en toevoegingen aan huizen of in tuinen van bestaande en nieuwe woningen in de wijk. De ontwerpen zijn het resultaat van een dialoog die de kunstenares met de bewoners voerde. Ze vertellen iets over de bewoners, hun ideeën, wensen, dromen en de creatieve ideeën en oplossingen hiervoor. Door mensen te betrekken in de manier waarop het monument vorm krijgt worden de identiteit, wensen en creativiteit van de huidige bewoners zichtbaar. Het kunstproject kent dus niet alleen een cultureel-historische- en esthetische waarde, maar ook een emotionele.

Waarom zetten wij ons in voor dit project?

Woensel-West is een arbeiderswijk in het noordelijke deel van Eindhoven, die enkele decennia geleden haar gezellige glans verloor en te boek stond als achterstandswijk. De wijk werd begin 20e eeuw door Philips en de gemeente Eindhoven aangelegd in een tijd waarin, als gevolg van industrialisatie, Eindhoven explosief groeide. Deze bijzondere geschiedenis en architectuur willen wij niet zomaar verloren laten gaan.

De afgelopen jaren hebben Julieta G Vazquez en de culturele organisatie TAAK onderzocht hoe de collectieve herinnering van een wijk een plek kan krijgen in het proces van transformatie en fragmentatie. Hiervoor hebben we de geschiedenis van de sociale woningbouw, het gebruik en de aanpassingen aan de woningen en de sociale geschiedenis van de wijk en haar individuele bewoners onderzocht.

De kunstenares heeft de levens van mensen gevolgd en geprobeerd hen te inspireren om kritisch naar de vernieuwing van hun omgeving te kijken. Samen met de bewoners heeft zij gevochten voor de missie van het project, wat een band tussen de bewoners onderling en tussen de bewoners en de initiatiefnemers heeft doen laten ontstaan.

De Huiskamer

Een belangrijke fase van het project, waarin onderzocht werd hoe je het collectieve geheugen van de wijk kan representeren was De Huiskamer. De kunstenares ging in 2011 langs de deuren om mensen te vragen of zij objecten uit hun huis wilden doneren voor de inrichting van een huiskamer in Edisonstraat 67. Deze huiskamer was een groeiend archief van objecten die typisch zijn voor de inwoners van Woensel-West en een ontmoetingsplaats waar mensen gezamenlijk konden koken, praten, aan cursussen deelnemen, werken, lezen, relaxen en zien wat andere buurtbewoners hadden gedoneerd. In deze fase van het project is het netwerk en de betrokkenheid van buurtbewoners ontstaan. Samen met Julieta dachten ze na over de identiteit van de buurt en hoe je deze kan waarderen en representeren. Aan alle objecten waarmee de huiskamer ingericht werd zat immers ook een verhaal vast dat verteld kon worden.

Het Woensel-Westproject startte in 2011 als initiatief van het Van Abbemuseum. Het project werd later omgevormd van een institutioneel initiatief naar een persoonlijk gebaar van de kunstenares naar de buurt. De kunstenares is vanaf deze omwenteling ondersteund door de culturele organisatie TAAK. Alhoewel het project grotendeels ondersteund wordt door Stichting DOEN enRabobank Bouwfonds hebben wij voor de volledige uitvoering van het project extra financiële middelen nodig. Het streven is om zo veel mogelijk ontwerpen van en voor de bewoners uit te kunnen voeren. Hiervoor hebben we jouw hulp nodig. Aangezien de buurtbewoners zo nauw betrokken zijn bij het project is crowdfunding het geijkte middel om dit doel te bereiken. Daarom nodigen we je uit om dit bijzondere project te steunen en je aan te sluiten bij het netwerk van mensen dat zich inzet voor de realisatie van de verbeelding van de identiteit, het leven, de wensen en dromen van de bewoners. Door het project van Julieta wordt het bijzondere karakter van Woensel West en haar bewoners zichtbaar in de architectuur en openbare ruimte van de wijk. Uw bijdrage is nodig om samen met ons de laatste stap van het project te realiseren, zodat wij het monument voor Woensel-West kunnen verwezenlijken.

Biografie

Het werk van Julieta Garcia Vazquez is gebaseerd op langlopende processen, waarin zij betrokken raakt bij de activiteiten en behoeften van een gemeenschap. Het ontwikkelen als kunstenaar in een post-crisisscenario in Argentinië was van invloed op haar onderzoek naar verschillende stelsels van sociale verbouwing en sociaal behoud, waarbij zij verschillende betrokkenen -van bewoners tot specialisten in andere activiteiten dan kunst- betrekt in een allesomvattende structuur met flexibele regels opgesteld met het oog op de omgeving.

Why are we committed to this project?

In recent years we have studied how the collective memory of a neighbourhood operates in the process of transformation and fragmentation. We have followed the lives of people and tried to create a context that would inspire them to look critically at the renewal of their surroundings. Together with the residents we have fought for the mission of this project, which resulted in a connection between the residents and between the residents and everyone involved in the project.

Besides the social aspect, we are also committed to the special character of Woensel West, a working-class neighbourhood in the northern part of Eindhoven, which has lost its cozy shine a few decades ago and was classified as a disadvantaged area. Philips and the municipality of Eindhoven built the neighbourhood in the early 20th century in a time when, as a result of industrialization, Eindhoven grew explosively. We should preserve this particular history and architecture. At this very moment, some of the existing buildings are being demolished and replaced by new ones. This is producing a profound impact on the demographics and the appearance of the neighbourhood.

What do we want to achieve with the project?

What we want to achieve with the project is to preserve the collective remembrance of Woensel West. The Argentinian artist Julieta Garcia Vazquez suggested to choose one of the traditional workers' houses, in collaboration with the inhabitants and preserve it as a monument of the welfare state and industrialization. By involving people in the way the monument will take shape, the project makes visible the identity, desires and creativity of the current residents.

De Huiskamer

In 2011 Julieta G Vazquez went knocking on doors, asking people if they wanted to donate items from their houses to furnish a living room on the address Edisonstraat 67. ‘De Huiskamer’ was both a growing archive of the visual identity of the area, creating a huge collection of typical objects of Woensel West, as a meeting place where people could cook, talk together, work and organize all kind of activities. In this phase of the project, a network of people had emerged, which, in a way, represented the character, singularity and history of the area. Indeed, all of the objects which decorated the living room had a story of their own.

The monument

Then, one of the four pre-selected homes, which represented the neighbourhood the best in terms of architecture and social history, was chosen for preservation. The choice fell on Stephensonstraat 66. A house that hosted the traditional Philips worker's family for more than 50 years. Unfortunately, the necessary funding for the relocation and reconstruction of the house at the historical museum of the city was not achieved. In order to still preserve the memories of the neighbourhood JG Vazquez has found a remarkable solution. The building was deconstructed brick by brick and the individual materials will get a second life in the form of architectural and sculptural interventions and additions to the homes or gardens of new and existing homes in the area. The designs are the result of a dialogue between the artist and the residents and reflect upon the ideas, wishes, dreams and needs of the inhabitants. The art project therefore, has not only a cultural-historical and aesthetic value, but also an emotional one.

The Woensel West project started in 2011 as an initiative of the Van Abbemuseum. The project was later transformed from an institutional initiative to a personal gesture of the artist to the neighbourhood. Since the beginning, the artist has been supported by the cultural organization TAAK. Although the project is largely supported by Stichting DOEN and Rabobank Bouwfonds, we still need additional financial support for the full implementation of the project. The aim is to be able to carry out as many concepts of the residents as possible. There are so many great ideas, which we would like to realize with your help. Biography

Julieta García Vázquez's practice is based in long-term processes, getting involved with the activities and needs of a community. Growing up as an artist in a post-crisis scenario in Argentina was an influence to research on different systems of social rebuilding and social preservation, where she involves different protagonists -from neighbours to specialist in activities other than art- in an all-encompassing structure with flexible rules departing from a diagnosis of the context.
